The headlines screamed that Six Corners, a little hamlet in Pennsylvania, had been wiped out by the Horror. Another front-page story told of a Terror in the Amazon Valley which had sent the natives down the river in babbling fear. Other stories told of deaths here and there, all attributable to the "Black Horror," as it was called.

Helliconia Spring (Gateway Essentials #325)

by Brian Aldiss

This is the first volume of the Helliconia Trilogy - a monumental saga which goes beyond anything yet created by this master among today's imaginative writers. Events and characters and animals stream across the pages of this gigantic novel. Cosmic in scope, it keeps an eye lovingly on the humans involved. So the 5,000 inhabitants of the Earth's observation station above Helliconia keep their eyes trained on the events of Oldorando and may long to intervene though the dangers are too great. So we on Earth have them all in our vision in one of the most consuming and magnificent novels of scientific romance.

Helliconia Summer (Gateway Essentials #326)

by Brian Aldiss

The second novel in the epic Helliconia trilogy. It is the summer of the Great Year on Helliconia. The humans are involved with their own affairs. Their old enemies, the phagors, are comparitively docile at this time of year; yet they can afford to wait, to take advantage of human weakness - and of the king's weakness. How they do so brings to a climax this powerfully compelling novel, in which the tortuous unwindings of circumstance enmesh royalty and commoners alike, and involve the three Helliconia continents.

Helliconia Summer: Helliconia Spring; Helliconia Summer; Helliconia Winter (The Helliconia Trilogy #2)

by Brian W. Aldiss

The Grand Master of Science Fiction&’s &“monumental&” epic continues as Helliconia nears its larger star—and a strange visitor joins its civilization (The Times, London). A handful of centuries on, Helliconia is close to the larger star in its binary system, and the Phagors have been driven into exile, but conflicting religions and hostility to science keep human civilization fragmented and constantly fighting wars over petty power and fertile land as a plague devastates populations. However, everything changes when a secret visitor from the observer satellite from Earth accepts a slow death in order to visit the planet and spend his time in the sunlight and open air. More than thirty years after the original publication of Helliconia Spring, the first volume of the Helliconia Trilogy, the series is newly available, now with a map, an afterword, and an introduction by the author.

The Helliconia Trilogy: Helliconia Spring, Helliconia Summer, and Helliconia Winter (The Helliconia Trilogy #Bks. 1-3)

by Brian W. Aldiss

From a Science Fiction Grand Master: The sweeping epic of a planet veering from one extreme atmosphere to another—and the humans trying to survive on it. Helliconia Spring introduces us to a tumultuous world that follows an eccentric orbit around a double-star system—and the satellite from Earth secretly monitoring it. Hugo and Nebula Award–winning author Brian W. Aldiss then explores the social and religious divisions keeping the planet&’s population in conflict even as they&’re devastated by plague in Helliconia Summer, and concludes the trilogy with Helliconia Winter, which recounts both the threat of a looming, frigid age of decay and the hope of a new future. The Helliconia Trilogy is both a riveting story and a thought-provoking examination of how our destinies are shaped by the environment around us. Aldiss&’s study of fields from astronomy to climatology to geobiology endow all three novels with rich details of the planet Helliconia. This riveting, century-spanning saga is a timely exploration of what climate change can mean for our own planet. &“Brian Aldiss&’s towering imagination places his Helliconia Trilogy far above standard science fiction&” (Daily Mail).

Helliconia Winter: Helliconia Spring; Helliconia Summer; Helliconia Winter (Helliconia Trilogy, Volume #3)

by Brian W. Aldiss

Brian Aldiss's epic science fantasy trilogy tells how scientists from earth;, living in a sociologically altered orbital observation station, study the conflict between primitive human-like and cattle-like beings on a planet with seasons lasting centuries. Atheneum's summary of the third volume reads as follows. Brian Aldiss's Helliconia Trilogy-already hailed as his greatest achievement and possibly the greatest science fiction epic of our time-comes to a spectacular conclusion in Helliconia Winter. On Helliconia, Aldiss's special planet, where one year lasts two and a half thousand earth years and winter is seven centuries long, snow is now falling. As Helliconia moves on its elliptical path away from the warmth of the sun Freyr, crops fail, and the growing harshness of the climate is matched by the harshness of government under the Oligarch. Now, too, mankind's ancient enemies, the phagors, begin to leave their mountain fastnesses to war upon human civilization. Here is a magical story of journeys, strange transformations, and the world of events that paralyze or alter the lives of men and women. It is the story of a great battle, whose victors are betrayed and exterminated. The story of a beautiful woman who falls into the hands of her husband's slayer. The story of Luterin Shokerandit, who undertakes a pilgrimage of breathtaking peril through the gathering winter to the farthest polar reaches of the planet, and enters the Great Wheel of Kharnabhar, where the prisoners of the Wheel are believed to row their planet back to light. Involved in this drama are other dimensions: the world of the dead; distant Earth-also undergoing winter-and the deities that preside over the life of both planets. Out of all this vast and rich material, Brian Aldiss has created a grand and panoramic novel, a climax to his trilogy, in which metaphysical speculation flows side by side with memorable settings and an assembly of striking characters. In a long and enthusiastic review of Helliconia Spring and Helliconia Summer, the New York Times concluded by saying, "Mr. Aldiss is now in competition with no one but himself." This time, he has beaten the competition.

But America is unrecognizable--the Bering Strait has been dammed and much of the country has become a desert, populated by isolated natives and the bizarre remnants of a disintegrated culture. Hello Devilfish!

by Ron Dakron

Hello Devilfish! is a first-person (or first-fish) account of a giant blue Japanese movie monster stingray's attack on contemporary Tokyo and his tragic morph into human form. Using elements of Japanese shock-pop and the infamous Hello Kitty meme, the story is told in comic narrative from the stingray's point of view as he gleefully creams Tokyo into rubble. The stingray is soon pursued by Squidra, a love-struck giant squid. She demands love; he refuses. In an epic waterfront battle, she traps him in a human-growth hormone bath that changes him into a puny human - a reverse metamorphosis - monster to man. Refusing to accept his humanity, the stingray acts like his former giant self while trying to find food, shelter, romance - and avoid the destructive rampage of his stalker squid love interest. Hello Devilfish! is told in a readable, comic narrative occasionally spiced with Manglish words. Funny and very readable, underneath the outlandish plot is a truly fresh critique of contemporary culture and mainstream literature.
