Lenny Cyrus, School Virus
by Joe Schreiber Matt SmithIt seemed so logical at first. Fourteen-year-old Lenny Cyrus had loved Zooey Andrews since third grade. All the boy genius needed to do to win her heart, surely, was shrink down to the size of an amoeba, ooze into a gelatin capsule, and have his friend Harlan slip it (him!) into Zooey's Diet Coke. Told in three voices, this fantastical middle grade novel takes Lenny deep into Zooey's loud, splashing innards, where a talking astrovirus named Astro has a bad attitude about white blood cells ("self-righteous pus-bags") and aromatic hormones disco dance. The question is, will Lenny and Zooey survive his crazy experiment in nanotechnology? The worst part comes when Lenny inadvertently triggers an infection in Zooey's brain, and her whole body goes into lockdown. Can Lenny rescue Zooey before his time is up? Lenny Cyrus is determined to find his way into Zooey's heart. Literally.

Lensman From Rigel
by E. E. Smith David KyleThe second of three companion pieces to E.E. "Doc" Smith's magnificent space opera "The Lensmen" series, this novel follows the affairs of the non-human Second Stage Lensman Tregonsee, Director of Intelligence for the Galactic Patrol, as he faces many problems during the consolidation of Civilization in two galaxies after the (apparent) defeat of the evil empire Boskone. David Kyle was a personal friend of "Doc" Smith's, and received permission from the Smith estate to write three novels concerning the three non-human Lensmen that attained "second stage" status. Most of the characters from the original Lensmen epic are retained, and several new ones are added. Fans of The Lensmen series might find these companion novels disappointing, as they are not "clones" of the original. The writing style is not as "slam-bang" as Smith's, the characters have more depth, and the "science" part of the science fiction has been updated to the mid-70's. Nonetheless, they are a very enjoyable and highly competent addition to the Lensen universe.
Lent: A Novel of Many Returns
by Jo WaltonFrom Hugo, Nebula, and World Fantasy Award-winning Jo Walton comes Lent, a magical re-imagining of the man who remade fifteenth-century Florence—in all its astonishing strangenessYoung Girolamo’s life is a series of miracles. It’s a miracle that he can see demons, plain as day, and that he can cast them out with the force of his will. It’s a miracle that he’s friends with Pico della Mirandola, the Count of Concordia. It’s a miracle that when Girolamo visits the deathbed of Lorenzo “the Magnificent,” the dying Medici is wreathed in celestial light, a surprise to everyone, Lorenzo included. It’s a miracle that when Charles VIII of France invades northern Italy, Girolamo meets him in the field, and convinces him to not only spare Florence but also protect it. It’s a miracle than whenever Girolamo preaches, crowds swoon. It’s a miracle that, despite the Pope’s determination to bring young Girolamo to heel, he’s still on the loose…and, now, running Florence in all but name. That’s only the beginning. Because Girolamo Savanarola is not who—or what—he thinks he is. He will discover the truth about himself at the most startling possible time. And this will be only the beginning of his many lives."Rendered with Walton's usual power and beauty...It's this haunting character complexity that ultimately holds the reader captive to the tale." —N. Leo The African
by Amin MaaloufFrom his chlidhood in Fez, having fled the Christian Inquisition, through his many journeys to the East as an itinerant merhcant, Hasans story is a quixotic catalogue of pirates, slave girls and princesses, encompassing the complexities of a world in a state of religious flux. Hasan too is touched by the instability of the era, performing his hadj to Mecca, then converting to Christianity, only to relapse back to the Muslim faith later in life. In re-creating his extraordinary experiences, Amin Maalouf sketches an irrisistible portrait of the Mediterranea world as it was nearly five centuries ago - the fall of Granada, the Ottoman conquest of Egypt, Renaissance Rome under the Medicis: all contribute to a background of spectacular colour, matched only by the picaresque adventures of Hasan's life.

by Pagan Kennedy Arne TangherliniLeonora (Leo) is an Italian Asian American teen-ager with a rotten attitude and a genius I.Q. But one day the only boy she's ever liked disappears, and Leo, in a quest to rescue him, finds herself lured into the program's computer generated hell. A post-modern tilt at Alice in Wonderland, a computer-age Huckleberry Finn, leo@fergusrules.com is above all the story of a young woman's search for the lost world of her ancestors in a society in which technology has replaced community.Arne Tangherlini received his A.B. in History and Literature from Harvard and his M.A. from the Writing Seminars at Johns Hopkins University. He was a teacher for many years both in the Philippines and the United States and the co-author of Smart Kids: How Academic Talents are Nurtured and Developed in America."Leo @ fergusrulesrules.com is a fantastical coming of age story about a brainy, racially mixed teenage girl...who spends much of her spare time in her bedroom, jacked into a cyber wonderland called Apeiron. This computer-generated 3-D world is a timeless landscape, home to a historical line-up of digitally re-created dignitaries, such as Confucius, Julius Caesar and Napoleon... She also encounters relatives and ancestors, including her great aunt, who as a young woman survives being shot by American soldiers in the Philippine American War. Other dangers include pterodactyls with giant Barbie-doll bodies that dump guano and screech, 'Nike, Guess, Benetton, Levi's! Tommy, Tommy, Tommy-boy!" and a child-steamrollering Zamboni that is operated by gnomelike people and has a control room guarded by a three-headed dog. Needless to say, Leo is a trip...a 21st century homage to the works of Argentine poet and author Jorge Luis Borges

Leonie of the Jungle
by Joan ConquestWho found the kitten? "Me," quavered the childish voice. Lady Susan Hetth tchcked with her tongue against her rather prominent teeth at the lamentable lapse in grammar, and looked crossly at Leonie, who immediately lifted up the quavering voice and wept. Sobs too big for such a little girl shook the slender body, whilst great tears dripped from the long lashes to the tip of the upturned nose, down the chin and on the knee of the famous specialist, against which she rested. "Stand up, Leonie, and push your hair out of your eyes!" The thin little body tautened like an overstrung violin string, and a shock of russet hair was pushed hastily back from a pair of indefinable eyes, in which shone the light of an intense grief strange in one so young.
