The Hosts

by Pedro Pujante James Fields

It is a science fiction and fantasy novel, with lots of humor, irony and touches of nonsense. A somewhat odd and mediocre writer is surprised to receive an invitation to a 'Congress on Secret Literature', that will take place in a small and remote village in Extremadura, called Higueras. It is all wrapped in a strange mystery, and the information he receives on the subject is scarce and rather confusing. But since he has nothing better to do but get bored, he decides to participate in it. The picturesque and peaceful village of Higueras - after a strange journey of which little remembers - is exceptionally empty, fictitious and spectral. Only three other writers - Rocío, Román and Raúl - have attended this phantom and'secret' symposium. There, they are greeted by a strange character named Doctor Faustino. But the literary symposium will soon reveal itself as a farce and an excuse to keep them in the strange place. On what grounds? Are they really where they think they are? Do they live in the present or have they been moved to a remote, post-apocalyptic future? Is Higueras a village in Extremadura or a huge fiction? Is Faustino who he says he is? What are those strange noises? Why did you try to clone the illustrious writer Francisco Umbral? This novel is a journey back in time - we don't quite know when - in which a small town could be inhabited by clones with powers, grotesque TV presenters and creepy monsters.

Hosts (Repairman Jack #4)

by F. Paul Wilson

Repairman Jack returns in a sequel to the New York Times bestseller, The Tomb! Repairman Jack has been tearing up the urban adventure scene ever since he was introduced in the New York Times bestseller The Tomb . As his fans know, Repairman Jack doesn't deal with electronic appliances; he's a situation fixer, no matter how weird or deadly a situation may be. Repairman Jack has no last name, no Social Security number, and no qualms when it comes to getting the job done--even if it means putting himself in serious danger. After fifteen years of separation, Jack is contacted by his long-lost sister, Kate, to help her track down the source of her girlfriend Jeanette's sudden trance-like behavior. Referred by a mysterious stranger who gives only Jack's name and phone number, Kate is shocked to find out that the "repairman" she seeks is none other than her little brother-and not altogether happy to find out what little "Jackie" has been doing with himself for all these years. With Jack leading the way, Kate finds out that Jeannette's behavior can be traced back to the experimental therapy she underwent for a brain tumor: now Jeannette's brain and those of several other subjects are infected by a mutated virus. Like any good virus, it wants to multiply-and if Jack can't stop the virus in its path, there will be deadly results. Meanwhile, Jack is traveling on the 9 train when suddenly a passenger goes berserk and starts shooting at random-leaving Jack no choice but to throw himself into the spotlight by putting the shooter down. Worse for Jack, one of his fellow passengers is a reporter for the local tabloid, The Light , who sees Jack's heroism as his ticket to journalistic stardom. The reporter promises to make Jack a celebrity hero, a household name-which could mean the end of Repairman Jack as we know him.

Hot Equations: Science, Fantasy, and the Radical Imagination on a Troubled Planet

by Jesse S. Cohn

Inspired by the new diversity of science fiction, fantasy, and horror in the twenty-first century, Hot Equations: Science, Fantasy, and the Radical Imagination on a Troubled Planet confronts the kinds of literary and political “realism” that continue to suppress the radical imagination. Alluding both to the ongoing climate catastrophe and to Tom Godwin’s “The Cold Equations”—that famous touchstone of “hard science fiction”—Hot Equations reads the crises of our "post-normal" moment via works that increasingly subvert genre containment and spill out into the public sphere. Drawing on archives and contemporary theory, author Jesse S. Cohn argues that these imaginative works of science fiction, fantasy, and horror strike at the very foundations of modernity, calling its basic assumptions into question. They threaten the modern order with a simultaneously terrible and promising anarchy, pointing to ways beyond the present medical, ecological, and political crises of pandemic, climate change, and rising global fascism. Examining books ranging from well-known titles like The Hunger Games and The Caves of Steel to newer works such as Under the Pendulum Sun and The Stone Sky, Cohn investigates the ways in which science fiction, fantasy, and horror address contemporary politics, social issues, and more. The “cold equations” that established normal life in the modern world may be in shambles, Cohn suggests, but a New Black Fantastic makes it possible for the radical imagination to glimpse viable possibilities on the other side of crisis.
