School of Shards: A Novel (Vita Nostra #3)

by Marina & Dyachenko

The haunting final chapter of the modern classic Vita Nostra trilogy. The Dyachenkos’ magical dark academia novel brings the story of Sasha to a revelatory climax as she learns to take control of her powers and reshape the world...or destroy it forever. Beautifully translated from Russian by Julia Meitov Hersey. The Institute of Special Technologies teaches students just one thing: the magic that allows them to become parts of speech, and in doing so, transforming into a specific piece of grammar (a verb, or an adjective, or an article) so they will be able to shape the world around them. As the new provost, though, Sasha is facing an enormous problem: the students in the world she just created, her “world without fear,” are unable to master the curriculum. Whether it’s the magic or the natural order of things, what they need to learn and become—Speech—is the basis of the material world. And if she can’t teach it, Sasha knows that matter will soon cease to exist. To protect the world, Sasha must collect fragments of her former reality. Only three people carry these fragments within themselves: her younger brother, Valya, and the Grigoriev twins, Arthur and Pashka, the sons of her former lover, Yaroslav Grigoriev. Sasha must lure these three to the Institute and make them learn—and understand—at any cost. But she knows how difficult the path is, even more so from the other side of the teacher’s desk. Forced to act ever more ruthlessly, Sasha also notices the faster the world around the Institute changes. It is a vicious circle. And one she must break. To do so, she will have to shape reality again, one in which communication doesn’t break down and Speech once again needs to evolve and grow and flourish.Sasha has already given up so much in pursuit of this dream—often her nightmare—and she might be asked to make one more sacrifice so that the world and Speech might live on.

School of Wizardry (Circle of Magic, Book #1)

by Debra Doyle James D. Macdonald

Randal thought he wanted to be a wizard. Just before noon, Randal found Madoc in the tower. The wizard was reading a small, leather-bound book. "What is it, lad?" asked Madoc, not looking up. I want to be a wizard like you," Randal told him. "How can you want to be a wizard, boy? You haven't got the foggiest idea of what it's all about" Madoc rose and stood glaring down at Randal. "You'll spend most of your life with just enough power to get you into trouble. You'll be hungry more often than you're fed. You'll spend more time in danger on the road than safe under a roof. And maybe you'll survive it all and live to be old and white-bearded and wise-but if you do, most of your friends will have died a long time before. Go back downstairs to your uncle, lad, and one day you'll make a fine knight Wizardry is no life for you." Randal went, but he felt restless and uneasy. Even if wizardry was as hard as Madoc said, it was still the only thing he wanted.

SchoolWorld

by Rafael Estrada

"It was marvelous to fly, to roam through SchoolWorld at night, at the times with higher ratings. I liked to inspect the night schools and Institutes, sliding through the halls on my floatibike at top speed. The unpeople walked hunchingly, without looking at me, in case I had the brilliant idea of submitting them to the Emergency Test; they could be anything, be it classkipers or even chronic suspenders. Among the debris, a group of moropoors was eating around a fuming cauldron. My name is Threesabel Arquena and I'm a Class Delegate..." At the dawn of the XXIII century, society is deeply traumatized. After the Forgetfulness war, a global fight where Mnemonic Missiles were used for the first time, memories got diluted, data banks were either destroyed or deleted, and history became a cumulus of nonsense. As a consequence, culture became a religion. Two forces battle for the truth's monopoly: the University, a superpowerful estate that analyzes, interprets, and forces its official truth on History and Free Faculties, that rebels against the system, using urban warfare and sabotage.

In this, her second collection of short stories, Pippa Goldschmidt explores the lives of real and imaginary scientists, focusing on the human emotions and social connections behind the discoveries.

Schwartz Between the Galaxies: A Short Story

by Robert Silverberg

The double worlds of a disillusioned anthropologist collide in the Hugo–nominated story from the Science Fiction Grand Master. On a lecture tour, he flies across the globe in first class seats, but everywhere he travels to looks like the last place he&’s been. Argentina, Papua, France, Mexico—there&’s too much sameness wherever he goes. Western culture has homogenized the world. Even the people look alike. But in his mind is where the magic happens. There, he&’s on a starship gliding through the interstellar depths. His fellow passengers are natives of the worlds of Capella, Arcturus, Antares, and Polaris. There are sinuous humanoids, self-contained reptilians, and even whale-like creatures who dance alongside of the ship and beckon him to join them. As Schwartz finds himself increasingly torn in two, he has a choice to make: accept the world as it is or join in the cosmic harmony of the dance . . . Sci-fi Skirmish Scenarios: Small-unit Missions For Use With Your Favourite Wargaming Rules

by John Lambshead

Welcome to The Sprawl… Sci-fi skirmishes are an increasingly popular genre of war game but they are more dependent than most on good scenarios to keep them varied and exciting. John Lambshead has taken the work out of scenario building. He presents a selection of thirty-six missions of varying complexity, each with clear objectives and victory conditions, a map showing set-up zones and some with special rules. Although they are set in his imagined dystopian city of Civitas Cavernum (aka The Sprawl), with its factions of Scavs, Proctors, Cultists and Corporates, the scenarios are designed to be adaptable to almost any setting and set of rules (including those published in the author’s One-hour Skirmish Wargames). In addition, there are no less than three mini-campaigns that link the scenarios together in various combinations. But that is not all. John Lambshead gives advice on designing your own scenarios and campaigns and there is even a set of tables allowing you to quickly create them through random dice rolls, ensuring almost infinite variety to your games. Finally, there is a useful reference section listing websites of rules publishers and manufacturers of suitable miniatures and model terrain. Welcome to The Sprawl (but keep your gun close and your mask on).

Science Fact and Science Fiction: An Encyclopedia

by Brian Stableford

Science fiction is a literary genre based on scientific speculation. Works of science fiction use the ideas and the vocabulary of all sciences to create valid narratives that explore the future effects of science on events and human beings. Science Fact and Science Fiction examines in one volume how science has propelled science-fiction and, to a lesser extent, how science fiction has influenced the sciences. Although coverage will discuss the science behind the fiction from the Classical Age to the present, focus is naturally on the 19th century to the present, when the Industrial Revolution and spectacular progress in science and technology triggered an influx of science-fiction works speculating on the future. As scientific developments alter expectations for the future, the literature absorbs, uses, and adapts such contextual visions. The goal of the Encyclopedia is not to present a catalog of sciences and their application in literary fiction, but rather to study the ongoing flow and counterflow of influences, including how fictional representations of science affect how we view its practice and disciplines. Although the main focus is on literature, other forms of science fiction, including film and video games, are explored and, because science is an international matter, works from non-English speaking countries are discussed as needed.
