Rhetorics of Fantasy

by Farah Mendlesohn

This sweeping study of fantasy literature offers &“new and often surprising readings of works both familiar and obscure. A fine critical work&” (Journal of the Fantastic in the Arts). Transcending arguments over the definition of fantasy literature, Rhetorics of Fantasy introduces a provocative new system of classification for the genre. Drawing on nearly two hundred examples of modern fantasy, author Farah Mendlesohn identifies four categories—portal-quest, immersive, intrusion, and liminal—that arise out of the relationship of the protagonist to the fantasy world. Using these sets, Mendlesohn argues that the author's stylistic decisions are then shaped by the inescapably political demands of the category in which they choose to write. Each chapter covers at least twenty books in detail, ranging from nineteenth-century fantasy and horror to some of the best works in the contemporary field. Mendlesohn discusses works by more than one hundred authors, including Lloyd Alexander, Peter Beagle, Marion Zimmer Bradley, John Crowley, Stephen R. Donaldson, Stephen King, C. S. Lewis, Gregory Maguire, Robin McKinley, China Miéville, Suniti Namjoshi, Philip Pullman, J. K. Rowling, Sheri S. Tepper, J. R. R. Tolkien, Tad Williams, and many others.

Rhialto the Marvellous

by Jack Vance

Rhialto the Marvellous takes up the personal and political conflicts among a conclave of two dozen magicians of Ascolais and Almery in the 21st Aeon. The shocking appearance of the Llorio the Murtha, a powerful female force from an earlier aeon threatens to unbalance nature by "ensqualming" or feminizing the magicians. This triggers a tremendous struggle for power and the other mages turn against Rhialto. Hoping to reestablish his rightful place, Rhialto travels to other aeons to restore the missing Perciplex which projects the Mostrament, the constitution of the association. In his final adventure, Rhialto must, ultimately, travel to the very ends of time and space to confront an old adversary whom he had wronged and must commit further misdeeds to restore order.

by Denise Rossetti

A battle-scarred veteran of love and war, Captain Rhio of the Queen's Guard has never met a woman as fierce, as fascinating, as the foreign slave dancer, Amae. Her Dance of the Battle Maiden is so scandalous the captain has to quell a riot at Her Majesty's very proper reception for the Trinitarian ambassador. Fortunately, he's accustomed to taking command. Everything male in Rhio is aroused and challenged by Amae's untamed spirit. Despite his suspicions about her, he can't resist taking a single night to lose himself in her dark wild beauty. The dancer has the heart of a warrior and a nefarious purpose she won't disclose. She's up to her pretty little neck in political intrigue, treachery and murder, but for some stupid reason, Rhio can't make himself walk away. Amae might just get him killed before they're through, but gods, what a glorious way to go!Includes a preview of The Dark Rose Rhio's Dancer previously appeared in Laced with Desire

Rhuna, Guardiana de la Sabiduría

by Barbara Underwood

Ria

by Felix C. Forrest

Paul M. A. Linebarger wrote all of his fiction under one pseudonym or another. He is best known and greatly regarded for his science fiction work published under the name "Cordwainer Smith". While it does not rise to the heights of his science fiction, "Ria" gives a foreshadowing of the style and interests of his later work, including some beautiful narrative, very strange characters and situations, a taste for attention-grabbing names (such as the Prinz Todschonotschidsche), cruelty, psychotherapy, and cats.
