A Practical Handbook for the Boyfriend: For Every Guy Who Wants to Be One/For Every Girl Who Wants to Build One

by Felicity Huffman

Most dating books are written for women -- what a mistake that is. Women know how to date . . . It's men who need the help! At last: a blithe, bold, and bawdy guide to building a better boyfriend At some point, every guy -- player, geek, mama's boy, "regular Joe" -- meets a woman who makes him want to be a boyfriend. A good boyfriend. Problem is, unless he's had some first-rate training (by a previous girlfriend, a sister, a mom), he probably doesn't even know what that means. Felicity Huffman and Patricia Wolff come to the rescue with a rollicking -- and whip-smart -- handbook to navigating the minefield of male-female relationships. Directed at men (though of course it's women who'll buy it, then leave it at their boyfriend's place -- accidentally on purpose), A Practical Handbook for the Boyfriend lays out the many steps involved in becoming a good boyfriend, while still maintaining guy-dignity. It covers issues like: -Who decides when you become a boyfriend (answer: She does.) -How to look like you're listening, even when you're not (If you're busted, just say "You're so pretty, I'm distracted.") -Ten things never to say on the first date (#4: "I just did that to freak you out.") -Finding the middle ground between too cool (think third grade) and too eager (think surprise visits) -Why becoming a good boyfriend is a lot like training for the A team Filled with humor, ribaldry, common sense, and assorted outdoor skills, A Practical Handbook for the Boyfriend is the next dating guide to dominate the bestseller lists.

A Practical Treatise Upon Christian Perfection

by William Law

William Law, born in 1686, became a Fellow of Emmanuel College, Cambridge in 1711, but in 1714, at the death of Queen Anne, he became a non-Juror: that is to say, he found himself unable to take the required oath of allegiance to the Hanoverian dynasty (who had replaced the Stuart dynasty) as the lawful rulers of the United Kingdom, and was accordingly ineligible to serve as a university teacher or parish minister. He became for ten years a private tutor in the family of the historian Edward Gibbon (who, despite his generally cynical attitude toward all things Christian, invariably wrote of Law with respect and admiration), and then retired to his native King's Cliffe. Forbidden the use of the pulpit and the lecture-hall, he preached through his books. These include Christian Perfection, the Spirit of Love, the Spirit of Prayer, and, best-known of all, A Serious Call To a Devout and Holy Life, published in 1728.‘Law was about forty years of age when he wrote it and had he written no more, his reputation as a prose writer and ascetic theologian would have been established. The title of the book also Illustrates two dominant traits in his personality, the concern to be practical and the primary importance of growth in holiness. The perfection he recommends ‘calls no one to a cloyster, but to a right and full performance of those duties, which are necessary for all Christians, and common to all states of life'. It is the heart that finds expression in our actions, and it is the heart, therefore, that must be made perfect.' (A. Keith Walker, William Law, p. 47; quotation from Law's Introduction, p. 2)

Readers will come to the end feeling sorry to leave [this] richly textured and carefully wrought world.” —STEPHEN KING, Washington PostI am doomed to remember a boy with a wrecked voice—not because of his voice, or because he was the smallest person I ever knew, or even because he was the instrument of my mother's death, but because he is the reason I believe in God; I am a Christian because of Owen Meany. In the summer of 1953, two eleven-year-old boys—best friends—are playing in a Little League baseball game in Gravesend, New Hampshire. One of the boys hits a foul ball that kills the other boy's mother. The boy who hits the ball doesn't believe in accidents; Owen Meany believes he is God's instrument. A Private and Public Faith (The\foundations Quartet: Ser.)

by William Stringfellow

The author hits hard at the manipulation of religion for personal, corporate and national self-interests; and sets forth the possibility and content of a relevant and honest witness to Christ in both private and public affairs.“This is a tract. It consists of four essays about the status of religion in contemporary American society and about the condition of the churches of American Protestantism.“As I find it, religion in America is characteristically atheistic or agnostic. Religion has virtually nothing to do with God and has little to do with the practical lives of men in society. Religion seems, mainly, to have to do with religion. The churches—particularly of Protestantism—in the United States are, to a great extent, preoccupied with religion rather than with the Gospel. That, in brief, is the substance of the essays in this tract.”

A Prática de Humanidade

by Dada Bhagwan

A Psychoanalytic Approach to Smoking Cessation: The Cigarette as a Transitional Object

by Fung Ko

A Psychoanalytic Approach to Smoking Cessation: The Cigarette as a Transitional Object provides an accessible understanding to the unconscious motive behind smoking addiction using Winnicott’s concept of the transitional object. The book is divided thematically into six parts. Ko begins by outlining the conscious motives for smoking from a psychological perspective and looks at commercial research conducted by the tobacco industry, before using psychoanalytically informed cross-disciplinary literature to assess the unconscious motives for smoking. She expertly introduces Winnicott’s view on smoking addiction, using his concept of the transitional object, and highlights the power of the Free Association Narrative Interview method in accessing the unconscious and embedded emotional experiences. Using clinical examples, she illustrates the benefits of this method as a tool to elicit free associations from research respondents. She details the parallels between the individual respondents’ smoking experience, as well as their relationship with cigarettes and the seven qualities of transitional objects outlined by Winnicott in his 1953 landmark paper. Ko concludes by emphasising the significance and implications of this thesis to smokers and public health policy, as well as the smoking cessation approach and proposed directions for future research. This book is an essential resource for psychoanalysts and psychotherapists working in smoking cessation organisations, as well as those working in addiction services.

A Pílula da Imortalidade - Já Disponível

by Richard Stooker Irina Maia

A Random Act: An Inspiring True Story of Fighting to Survive and Choosing to Forgive

by Cindi Broaddus Kimberly Lohman Suiters

Cindi Broaddus didn't realize that her life was about to be forever altered as she sat in the passenger seat of a car on a lonely highway, speeding toward the airport in the early morning hours of June 5, 2001. The sister-in-law of Dr. Phil McGraw, a single mother of three, and a delighted new grandmother, she was thinking only of her imminent, well-earned vacation when a gallon glass jar filled with sulfuric acid, tossed from an overpass by an unknown assailant, came crashing through the windshield. In a heartbeat, Cindi was showered with glass and flesh-eating liquid, leaving her blinded, screaming in agony, and burned almost beyond recognition. When she reached the hospital, the attending doctors gave her little better than a 30 percent chance of survival. But Cindi Broaddus did survive--and after excruciating years of recuperation and seemingly endless sessions of skin grafts and reconstructive surgery, she emerged from her ordeal in many ways stronger than she had ever been before. This book includes picture descriptions.
