Angels of a Lower Flight

by Susan Scott Krabacher

"In this world, you were loved." The inspiring story of how one woman's message of hope and opportunity will change the lives of an entire generation. Three schools, two orphanages, a hospital, and an abandoned-infant home -- constructed in the poorest country in the western hemisphere -- were the result of one quick television commercial. The ad was for a charity, asking for donations to help impoverished children in a third world country. Though author Susie Scott Krabacher had a little money to give, what she wanted was to hold the hand of every child she saw and tell them that they were not forgotten and that they too were important. When Susie called the charity, it wanted only monetary donations -- and every other overseas nonprofit she contacted couldn't or wouldn't take on an inexperienced volunteer. So Susie set out to change the children's lives on her own. In this heartbreaking and inspiring memoir, Susie Scott Krabacher tells how the pain in her past caused her to doubt if God really loved and protected her. From her abusive childhood to her experiences as a Playboy centerfold during the 1980s, Susie details with frank honesty how she lost her faith along the way and how her experiences helping children in Haiti, an impoverished nation only five hundred miles from Florida, brought God back into her life. In a country where 10 percent of all children die before the age of four, Susie mounted a brave effort to provide not just charity but opportunity. By treating the children she helps as individuals, Susie gives them the tools to save their own country. Although some of the children she's tirelessly worked to rescue do not survive, Susie will never again lose her faith.

Anger and Forgiveness: Resentment, Generosity, and Justice

by Martha C. Nussbaum

Anger is not just ubiquitous, it is also popular. Many people think it is impossible to care sufficiently for justice without anger at injustice. Many believe that it is impossible for individuals to vindicate their own self-respect or to move beyond an injury without anger. To not feel anger in those cases would be considered suspect. Is this how we should think about anger, or is anger above all a disease, deforming both the personal and the political?

In this wide-ranging book, Martha C. Nussbaum, one of our leading public intellectuals, argues that anger is conceptually confused and normatively pernicious. It assumes that the suffering of the wrongdoer restores the thing that was damaged, and it betrays an all-too-lively interest in relative status and humiliation. Studying anger in intimate relationships, casual daily interactions, the workplace, the criminal justice system, and movements for social transformation, Nussbaum shows that anger's core ideas are both infantile and harmful.
Is forgiveness the best way of transcending anger? Nussbaum examines different conceptions of this much-sentimentalized notion, both in the Jewish and Christian traditions and in secular morality. Some forms of forgiveness are ethically promising, she claims, but others are subtle allies of retribution: those that exact a performance of contrition and abasement as a condition of waiving angry feelings. In general, she argues, a spirit of generosity (combined, in some cases, with a reliance on impartial welfare-oriented legal institutions) is the best way to respond to injury. Applied to the personal and the political realms, Nussbaum's profoundly insightful and erudite view of anger and forgiveness puts both in a startling new light.

Anger Antidotes: How Not to Lose Your S#&!

by Ian Brennan

Strategies for living a crisis-free life in an imperfect world. Anger is at the root of most of the personal dilemmas we face. Frank, personal, and pithy, this book engages readers in a no-nonsense exploration of how we can effectively reach beyond ourselves to maintain calm in the face of crisis. The objective is to distill down to fundamental aspects the universal structures that form the basis of most human problems. It is usually our emotions that interfere with making sound choices. Thus, even the most learned individuals, who "know better," are capable of making colossally stupid errors in judgment and conduct. Presenting a range of deescalation techniques, each chapter has been concentrated into "mini- manuals" that in their totality contain a library's worth of material. The left side of each two-page spread describes the anger trigger and the right side of the page spread contains the anger antidote. Topics covered include emotional immaturity, the absence of thought, extremes, inertia, reactor bait, and argument traps.

The Anger Diet: Thirty Days to Stress-Free Living

by Brenda Shoshanna

"Shoshanna extends an empty and richly filled hand, offering both the sublime and the practical," Publishers Weekly once noted of Brenda Shoshanna, Ph.D. Now Shoshanna unites the sublime and the practical once again, this time to show us how to rid ourselves of anger and become immune to its toxic effects in a new 30-day program called The Anger Diet.Road rage, school shootings, workplace violence, domestic abuse, drug addiction, and even the national obesity epidemic are manifestations of an overarching problem gripping our society: anger. Other books about anger are on the market, but this is the first and only "diet" from anger: a practical, step-by-step 30-day program designed to help readers cleanse their lives of the toxic effects of anger. As Dr. Shoshanna points out, "It is one thing to have an intellectual understanding of what is harmful. It is something else to know how to actually get rid of anger in your life." The Anger Diet is the book that bridges the gap between intellectual understanding and practical action. The practical actions correspond to the 24 forms of anger, many of which are hidden; each form is identified and addressed in its own chapter. Each day readers are asked to give up one form of anger and are given a replacement for it. One chapter per day, one day at a time, readers will learn how to loosen anger's hold on their lives and gain greater happiness, health, and peace.

Anger Kills

by Redford Williams

Dr. Redford Williams reveals ground-breaking research that confirms that hostility not only is a serious barrier to happiness, but can lead to heart disease and other life-threatening illnesses. Dr. Williams and his wife, Virginia, team up to present the latest research in the field and offer seventeen practical strategies that can help readers translate scientific theory into meaningful action. Begin by taking the Hostility Questionnaire, which will help you assess the degree to which hostility, cynicism, and aggression rule your life. Then start a Hostility Log and follow the Hostility Roadmap to keep track of those incidents or people that really push your buttons. With these insights, you can then move on to sample any or all of the seventeen different strategies to reduce the wrath that sabotages your health and can drain your life of joy and pleasure. In writing Anger Kills, the authors draw not only on the latest research, but on their own experiences as a couple for more than twenty-nine years and on the experiences of couples who have used the Williamses' methods successfully in various workshops the authors have led. The result is a combination of solid science with empathic explorations of the nature of human relationships and caring. This is science with a heart.
