Overcoming Fear of Fat

by Esther D Rothblum Laura Brown

Here is an enlightening new volume that presents an integration of anti-fat-oppressive attitudes into the work of feminist therapy. Overcoming Fear of Fat is unique among professional work in the area of women and fat in that it does not approach size as the problem; rather it approaches prejudice against fat as the problem. Although for nearly a decade, fat activists have been raising the issues that are confronted in this book, therapists, including feminist therapists, have been colluding with their clients in pathologizing fat, celebrating weight loss, and failing to adequately challenge cultural stereotypes of attractiveness for women, instead of empowering clients and encouraging them to take on expert authority about their own experiences. The contributors, including therapists and fat activists, aim to disconnect the issues of food intake and eating disorders from those of weight. They share personal and professional experiences of challenging fat oppression, offer strategies for therapists to rid themselves and their clients of fat oppressive attitudes, and most importantly, they confront long-held cultural myths that fat is unhealthy, and that fat women are physically unfit and are in hiding from their sexuality or personal power. A practical and informative resource for therapists, especially those who work with fat women or who themselves struggle with issues of feeling critical of their own body size, Overcoming Fear of Fat will also be a valuable guide for fat women who wish to feel supported in their struggle for self-worth and respect.

Overcoming Gambling: A Guide For Problem And Compulsive Gamblers

by philip mawer

Problem gambling is a significant issue in the UK where the number of gambling addicts is estimated to be around 250,000, according to the Gambling Commission's British Gambling Prevalence Survey 2007. It affects a wide range of people from teenagers and students to housewives and retired people, with increasing numbers of people gambling online. Numbers can easily be doubled considering that for each compulsive gambler there is at least one concerned "significant other". Numbers are rising annually, particularly in the UK, due to the softening of gambling advertising laws, an increase in casinos, and the popularity of internet gambling. In the USA, many industry insiders predict a return to internet gambling (stopped in 06 by banning deposits to internet casinos). The recession may also make some people more willing to take risks with their finances. This book analyses how and why people - from those with high incomes to the ordinary housewife or struggling student - gamble compulsively, and looks at how to stop.

Overcoming Guilt and Shame

by Daniel Green Mel Lawrenz

Discover How You Can Find Freedom from Guilt and Shame…

Do any of the following apply to you? I need forgiveness from God, but I don't know how to find it. It's only a matter of time before people find out I'm not good enough. I am disconnected and lonely. How can I figure out when I am guilty and when I am innocent? I don't think I'm worth being loved. I don't want to be so angry, jealous, and judgmental. I need to have a stronger connection with God.

If these statements sound familiar to you-you are not alone. Even the most emotionally healthy people today experience degrees of the anguish brought on by shame and guilt. The heavy burden of shame and guilt can often keep us from connecting with others and enjoying the freedom of living in Christ. In this book, the authors discuss the many ways in which guilt and shame both subtly and overtly manifest themselves in our lives. Using pastoral counseling and illustrative psychological case studies, they uncover the causes of and healthy responses to shame and guilt.

Overcoming Hindrances to Fulfilling Your Destiny

by Os Hillman

You can overcome the hindrances that keep you from fulfilling your destiny!"I believe that the greatest desire of Satan, who hates God, is to be able to shake his finger in God's face at the end of your life and declare to God, 'Ha ha! You received no inheritance in that saint. He was here on the earth for ninety years, but never fulfilled any of the purpose for which You placed him here.'"- Craig Hill, Family Foundations InternationalThe Bible tells us that Jesus came to give us life abundantly and to give us a purpose, a hope and a future (Jer 29:11 and Jn 10:10). It also says that Satan came to steal, kill and destroy our lives (Jn 10:10). Satan literally tried to kill Moses and Jesus at birth. He wanted to snuff out their purpose and destiny. If he cannot do that, he will try to wound you so badly in childhood that you cannot live your life for God or experience meaningful relationships and purpose in your life.Os Hillman has been helping men and women understand their purpose and destiny for over thirty years. He's discovered that Satan has a planned strategy to derail Christians from God's intended destiny for their life. He learned these lessons the hard way - through personal experience. You will find that the truths that are revealed in this book are not just a theory or a teaching, but are lessons learned from real-life hindrances that Os has discovered and overcome, and in some cases, still overcoming in his own life. He has helped many become free of their own hindrances to fulfilling their destinies. This book will help you do the same.

Overcoming Hoarding: A Self-Help Guide Using Cognitive Behavioural Techniques

by Satwant Singh Margaret Hooper Colin Jones

Hoarding is a condition where a person has a tendency to collect and save things excessively and has difficulty in getting rid of items. This results in a cluttered living space and often causes distress and impairs the person from being able to fully function in their home. It's a common condition that affects 2-5% of the population and has far-reaching consequences for sufferers, family, friends and the wider community, together with potential health and safety implications, with increased risk of injury or vermin. There has been increasing interest in the media which has raised public awareness of this problem, but there has been very little literature aimed at helping hoarders until now. There is no one reason why individuals hoard. For some, the hoarding behaviours are a way of coping with an emotional trauma. For others, there may be a strong attachment to certain objects, or a belief that certain materials have value - such as books, magazines and newspapers. Hoarding behaviour can also be a learnt behaviour from growing up in a cluttered environment. Sometimes unusual items or objects are hoarded including faeces and urine. Hoarding is a common condition but little is known about it. Almost everyone has some hoarding traits but these may not manifest themselves to the extent that it causes disruption to a person's life and space. The true prevalence of hoarding is not clear however it appears to be a growing problem. With the increased attention that hoarding is getting more people are beginning to recognize that they may have a problem. This book fills an important gap for a dedicated book on hoarding disorder, and uses CBT tools to help people recover, and reclaim their space and their life.
