Avoiding the Pitfalls of Familiarity

BarclayBecause Jesus grew up in Nazareth and the people knew his whole family, when He came to teach in their synagogue, the people discounted Jesus' preaching, because they were too familiar with him as just one of their neighbors who was a carpenter, not a "learned" religious leader of their day. They didn't respect Jesus as being qualified to teach them the word. The same thing can happen today to us as church members if we lose our first love -- Jesus. If a member of a congregation speaks against the minister with the intent to take away the esteem he has in the hearts of the congregation by defaming and standing against him, the minister is reduced to just another peer, rather than a leader. This causes desention and strife, since the devil's work is being done. When a person doesn't sit at someone's feet to learn, he will sit at his own feet, foolishly leaning on his own understanding, and eventually being his own adviser, making him proud and unteachable. The sin of familiarity is as dangerous as a plague, because it can travel from heart to heart, mouth to mouth and head to head, weakening and spiritually killing the congregation. This sin can show up in life possessionally, vocationally or in marriages when the novelty wears off, because a person has the discontent of familiarity. This sin is nothing new. There are examples from the Bible -- both the Old and New Testament that illustrate this sin of familiarity. Idolatry can result when the sin of familiarity isn't dealt with.
