Building Resilience to Trauma: The Trauma and Community Resiliency Models

by Elaine Miller-Karas

After a traumatic experience, survivors often experience a cascade of physical, emotional, cognitive, behavioral, and spiritual responses that leave them feeling unbalanced and threatened.
Building Resilience to Trauma explains these common responses from a biological perspective, refraining the human experience from one of shame and pathology to one of hope and biology.
It also presents alternative approaches, the Trauma Resiliency Model (TRM) and the Community Resiliency Model (CRM), which offer concrete and practical skills that resonate with what we know about the biology of trauma.

In programs co-sponsored by the World Health Organization, the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee, ADRA International, and the department of behavioral health of San Bernardino County, the TRM and the CRM have been used to reduce and in some cases eliminate the symptoms of trauma by helping survivors regain a sense of balance.
Clinicians will find that they can use the models with almost anyone who has experienced or witnessed any event that was perceived as life threatening or posed a serious injury to themselves or to others. The models can also be used to treat symptoms of vicarious traumatization and compassion fatigue.

Elaine Miller-Karas, LCSW, is the executive director and co-founder of the Trauma Resource Institute (TRI) and adjunct faculty at Loma Linda University's School of Social Work and Social Ecology.

She has 30 years of experience in social work, education, and trauma therapy and has held leadership roles in international disaster-recovery projects in the Philippines, Haiti, Guatemala, China, Kenya, and Thailand. Her El Salvadoran ancestry fuels her commitment to create culturally sensitive interventions.

Building Resilience with Appreciative Inquiry : A Leadership Journey through Hope, Despair, and Forgiveness

by Joan McArthur-Blair Jeanie Cockell

Building Resilience with Appreciative InquiryA Leadership Journey through Hope, Despair, and ForgivenessAs a leader, you have work that is complex, full of ups and downs. Your ability to be resilient—to pick yourself up after setbacks and keep on going no matter the challenges—is critical not only to successful leadership but also to fostering teams, generating collaboration, and igniting your organization. In this breakthrough book, veteran consultants Joan McArthur-Blair and Jeanie Cockell show that Appreciative Inquiry can be an invaluable tool to build that resilience.Appreciative Inquiry is a time-tested, highly effective, and widely used change method that emphasizes identifying what's working well in a system and building on those strengths. Originating in the 1980s, it's been responsible for dramatic results in every conceivable type of organization. Using the authors' Appreciative Resilience model, leaders can use AI to increase their ability to weather the storms they'll inevitably face and come out stronger. A profoundly practical guide, this book features first-person accounts from leaders in all kinds of settings and situations describing how they've used AI concepts to increase their resilience, as well as a detailed description of the exercises and practices the authors use in their Appreciative Resilience Workshop. McArthur-Blair and Cockell believe that the core of resilience is the interplay among despair, hope, and forgiveness. Every leader experiences despair in those moments when there is no clear path forward. Maintaining hope that a better future is possible enables leaders to keep going. And forgiveness, of one's own shortcomings and those of others, helps leaders move from despair to hope. AI's focus on the best of what is and using that to generate the future makes it a particularly powerful aid and ally on this journey.

Building Strategy and Performance

by Kim Warren

The fundamental challenge facing business leaders is to drive performance into the future--the dynamics of strategy. To tackle this effectively, they need a clear understanding of what causes performance to improve or deteriorate and what power they have to change this trajectory for the better. Without this understanding, they risk making poor choices about their future--failing to exploit promising opportunities, pursuing unachievable aims, or falling victim to competitive and other threats. Building Strategy and Performance Through Time sets the agenda for building business strategy in powerful, actionable, and accessible terms. It gives executives clear frameworks for answering three fundamental questions: * Why is our business performance following its current path? * Where is it going if we carry on as we are? * How can we design a robust strategy to transform this future? The existing strategy tools most widely used help guide management's choices about where to compete--which customers to serve, with what products and services, and how to deliver those products and services to those customers effectively and profitably. While this choice is important, it is not often changed in any fundamental way; having found a reasonably strong and profitable position on these issues, few firms will, or should, set off in a new direction. But there is still much to be done to deliver that strategy, powerfully and sustainably over time. Many decisions need to be made, continually and holistically, across all functions of the business and adapted as conditions change from month to month and year to year. Pricing, product development, marketing, hiring, service levels, and other decisions cannot be made in isolation but must take into account other choices being made, elsewhere and at different times. Building Strategy and Performance Through Time explains a reliable, practical method, known as strategy dynamics, that creates a living picture of how an enterprise actually works and delivers performance. This picture shows exactly where the levers are that management controls and how to choose what to do, when, and how much, to accomplish your specific goals. It shows, too, how the same approach can be used to defeat competitors, cope with other outside forces, and keep delivering performance.

Grounded in multiple fields of research, this book offers a practical training manual for the mind. With more than 40 reflections and exercises, it offers a guided tour to an ‘inner gym’, showing readers how to cultivate these capabilities.Leaders who have realized that it takes more than IQ and theoretical knowledge to create sustainable impact and are looking for ways to deepen their leadership capacity and authenticity will find them in this practical training manual for the mind.

Building Trust: Exceptional Leadership in an Uncertain World

by Ph.D. Darryl Stickel

Losing someone&’s trust is easy—building it back is much harder. In Building Trust: Exceptional Leadership in an Uncertain World, Darryl Stickel answers the key questions leaders face: what is trust, why is it essential to leadership, and how can I become more trusted?Trust is a basic, intuitive human reaction; it holds the fabric of our society together. Unfortunately, trust is at an all-time low in our institutions, governments, healthcare, and law enforcement. Fewer people attend a place of worship than at any time in the last eighty-plus years. Citizens fear their votes are not being counted and that politicians are lying to them—that the system itself has no legitimacy. People fail to take life-saving vaccines because they don&’t trust what medical professionals and policymakers tell them. In law enforcement, a lack of trust motivates non-cooperation, fear, and a breakdown in law and order. We are facing an unprecedented trust-deficit crisis. In Building Trust: Exceptional Leadership in an Uncertain World, Darryl Stickel, one of the world&’s foremost experts on trust, outlines his groundbreaking Trust Unlimited blueprint for building trust. Stickel moves away from the traditional approach of influencing people&’s willingness to trust—the con artist&’s tactic—to employing one or more of ten levers, which leaders can &“pull&” to close the gap between how much they are trusted and how much they should be. This approach also makes them more trustable and increases trust where it is deficient. Detailed case studies provide examples of his Trust Unlimited model in action.

La bulimia me salvó: La historia de trauma, depresión y TCA que nunca quise escribir

by Lis Valera

The Bullet Journal Method: Track the Past, Order the Present, Design the Future

by Ryder Carroll

The long-awaited first book by the founder of the enormously popular Bullet Journal® organizational system. For years Ryder Carroll tried countless organizing systems, online and off, but none of them fit the way his mind worked. Out of sheer necessity, he developed a method called the Bullet Journal that helped him become consistently focused and effective. When he started sharing his system with friends who faced similar challenges, it went viral. Just a few years later, to his astonishment, Bullet Journaling is a global movement. The Bullet Journal Method is about much more than organizing your notes and to-do lists. It's about what Carroll calls "intentional living": weeding out distractions and focusing your time and energy in pursuit of what's truly meaningful, in both your work and your personal life. It's about spending more time with what you care about, by working on fewer things. His new book shows you how to... * Track the past: Using nothing more than a pen and paper, create a clear and comprehensive record of your thoughts. * Order the present: Find daily calm by tackling your to-do list in a more mindful, systematic, and productive way. * Design the future: Transform your vague curiosities into meaningful goals, and then break those goals into manageable action steps that lead to big change. Carroll wrote this book for frustrated list-makers, overwhelmed multitaskers, and creatives who need some structure. Whether you've used a Bullet Journal for years or have never seen one before, The Bullet Journal Method will help you go from passenger to pilot of your own life.

Bulletproof: The Making of an Invincible Mind

by Chuck Holton

Would you like to have the confidence, the kind of driving purpose, that shuts out all fear? Do you want your life to be filled with adventure? There are many kinds of soldiers, and the ones that this book is written for don't necessarily wear a uniform. The missions these soldiers undertake have more than just political or historical significance-they are impacting eternity. Bulletproof is a field manual for the Christian soldier. It addresses the issues of fear and risk from a Christian perspective, using primarily military examples and analogies. Holton teaches believers how to overcome fear and join the ranks of the army of God. Terrorism. Murder. Disease. Job Loss. Road Rage. Weapons of Mass Destruction. Environmental Disaster. [Headline]: What? Are YouScared? [Body copy]: By every sense of reason, you should be. By faith, you don't have to be. God's soldiers are issued body armor: Peace that surpasses understanding. But you must choose to put it on. Chuck Holton reveals how to claim this peace of mind and rest in the sovereignty of God's plan while stationed in our dangerous world. Not denying legitimate causes for fear, Holton's balanced perspective to living boldly as a Christian today offers refreshing hope in the midst of rampant anxiety. Because when you begin seeing things from the Commander's perspective, you won't have to dodge bullets. Until your mission is complete, you are bulletproof. Story Behind the Book "In October 2002, a sniper started killing people at random in the area where I live. The community almost ground to a standstill, with people refusing to leave their homes, drive the streets, or send their children to school until the killer was found. What disturbed me most was the reaction of many of my fellow Christians-one of fear just like their unsaved neighbors. I felt we were passing up a perfect opportunity to model the peace that passes all understanding to a very needy audience. "Since then I have come to realize that the Bible, almost in its entirety, tells us over and over again that we should not be afraid. A life lived trusting God is a fearless, confident life that will draw others to it. " From the Trade Paperback edition.

Bulletproof Decisions: How Executives Can Get It Right, Every Time

by Ruben Ugarte

We are told from a young age that we should strive to make the right decisions, but we aren’t taught exactly how to do this. Every day, we make over 35,000 decisions in our personal and professional lives. How many of those decisions do we get right? This book will help business executives systematically tackle these 35,000 decisions. Executives are forced to make critical decisions that impact their lives, their employees’ lives, and the lives of their customers. Decisions like what products to create, who should be hired, and what divisions to shut down are all commonplace in the executive suite. This book offers three strategies for dealing with decisions: problem-solving techniques, routines, and decision-making frameworks. Each strategy is designed to help readers achieve more clarity, gain time back, and improve the quality of their decisions. The first one focuses on helping readers solve the right problem instead of wasting time on the wrong one. The second strategy helps deal with decisions that need to be made once but can then be executed regularly. The third and final strategy provides a three-step framework for making the most important decisions in their lives. The focus of the author’s work is on helping readers use data to make better decisions. This book gives readers the tools to convert the insights they learn from their data into actionable decisions.
