Athlete Activism: Contemporary Perspectives (Routledge Research in Sport, Culture and Society)
by Rory MagrathThis book examines the phenomenon of athlete activism across all levels of sport, from elite and international sport, to collegiate and semi-pro, and asks what this tells us about the relationship between sport and wider society. With contributions from scholars around the world, the book presents a series of fascinating case studies, including the activism of world-famous athletes such as Serena Williams, Megan Rapinoe and Raheem Sterling. Covering a broad range of sports, from the National Football League (NFL) and Australian Rules, to fencing and the Olympic Games, the book sheds important light on some of the most important themes in the study of sport, including gender, power, racism, intersectionality and the rise of digital media. It also considers the financial impact on athletes when they take a stand and the psychological impact of activism and how that might relate to sports performance. It has never been the case that ‘sport and politics don’t mix’, and now, more than ever, the opposite is true. This is essential reading for anybody with an interest in the politics or sociology of sport, the politics of protest, social movements or media studies.
The Athlete and Their Mechanisms of Defense: A Psychoanalytic Approach to Sport Psychology
by Tom FerraroThis important book explores the way athletes use defense mechanisms and coping skills to manage both the internal and external stress faced in competitive sport. Covering a range of case studies across various sports, the text showcases a taxonomy of immature, neurotic and mature defences available to the athlete and describes the benefits and drawbacks of each.A clear introductory section defines what defense mechanisms are and how they impact performance such as shame, anxiety, despair, memories of previous losses or fantasies about winning. Applying a psychoanalytic approach in line with the ideas of Sigmund Freud, Anna Freud, Fenichel, Leo Rangel, George Valliant and many others, the author uses each case study to connect the defense mechanism under investigation with the world of the athlete. Focused on delivering research-based evidence, the book helps readers deepen their understanding of the different types of defense mechanisms used by athletes across the globe, as the author explains what causes them, and recommends techniques for developing effective coping skills. Each chapter of the book also includes a reflective section that challenges the reader to think about how they can help athletes to grow and develop healthy defense mechanisms in any stage of their career. This invaluable text is geared towards the practitioners, researchers, psychoanalysts and students in sport psychology who wish to look more deeply into why athletes struggle. It is also an ideal resource for athletes interested in understanding ways to cope with the unrelenting, exciting and at times overwhelming pressure of competitive sports.

Athlete Transitions into Retirement: Experiences in Elite Sport and Options for Effective Support (Routledge Psychology of Sport, Exercise and Physical Activity)
by Deborah AgnewTransitions in sport can be either normative (relatively predictable) or non-normative (less predictable) and are critical times in the development of athlete’s careers. While retirement from sport is inevitable, the timing of retirement can be less predictable. If an athlete copes well with the transition they may be better able to adjust to life after sport. However, not coping with the transition can lead to a crisis and negative consequences for the athlete. Transition periods from sport and in particular retirement from sport have been identified as high-risk periods for athletes in terms of psychological distress. However, circumstances surrounding the athlete’s retirement are a critical factor in the transition into life after sport. Voluntarily retiring from sport for example, leads to a smoother transition than being forced into retirement through injury or deselection. Research indicates that retirement from sport should be seen as a process rather than a single moment, with many athletes taking up to two years to successfully transition out of sport. Currently, there are few bodies of work that are solely devoted to retirement transition. Athlete Transitions into Retirement: Experiences in Elite Sport and Options for Effective Support provides contemporary viewpoints on athlete transitions from elite sport in a global context. This volume is a collaboration of research from leading authors around the world, offering global perspectives to athlete transitions into retirement and is key reading for both researchers and practitioners in the fields of Sport Psychology and Coaching as well as the Athletes themselves.

The Athlete's Fix: A Program for Finding Your Best Foods for Performance and Health
by Pip TaylorIn The Athlete's Fix, registered dietitian Pip Taylor will help you find your problem foods--and the foods that make you feel and perform your best. The Athlete's Fix offers a sensible, 3-step program to identify food intolerances, navigate popular special diets, and develop your own customized clean diet that will support better health and performance. Recent studies show that food intolerances are almost 5 times more prevalant today than in the 1950s; as many as 1 in 6 Americans is estimated to have a food sensitivity. Exercise can make food intolerances even worse for endurance athletes. Food cravings, GI distress, headaches, brain fog--these common reactions can be more than symptoms of a tough workout. They could be caused by the foods you eat. Endurance sports stress the body, often worsening mild food sensitivities and causing symptoms like GI distress, food cravings, and headaches. Many athletes aggressively eliminate foods as a one-size-fits-all solution. These restrictive diets sometimes bring short-term improvements, but they are difficult to maintain and often leave athletes undernourished and underperforming. The Athlete's Fix offers a smarter, fine-tuned approach. Taylor will show how you will benefit most from a diet full of a wide variety of foods. You'll improve your daily diet, cut out common irritants, then add back foods until you feel great enjoying your own personalized clean diet. To help with this transition, The Athlete's Fix offers 50 recipes using easily tolerated foods that support a base functional diet. The Athlete's Fix examines hot issues for athletes like: Celiac disease, gluten intolerance, gluten-free and grain-free diets Lactose intolerance FODMAPs and specific carbohydrate intolerances, including fructose Reactions to food chemicals such as salicylates, amines, and glutamates Inflammatory foods Food sensitivity testing and elimination diets Popular special diet programs like Paleo, Whole30, Dukan, Mediterranean, and Dash Vegetarian, vegan, and raw food diets The Athlete's Fix will help you isolate and identify your food intolerances while enabling you to eat the widest possible variety of healthy foods. Feel better--perform better--with The Athlete's Fix.

Athletes, Sexual Assault, and Trials by Media: Narrative Immunity (Routledge Research in Sport, Culture and Society #22)
by Deb Waterhouse-WatsonSince footballer sexual assault became top news in 2004, six years after the first case was reported, much has been written in the news media about individual cases, footballers and women who have sex with them. Deb Waterhouse-Watson reveals how media representations of recent sexual assault cases involving Australian footballers amount to "trials by media", trials that result in acquittal. The stories told about footballers and women in the news media evoke stereotypes such as the "gold digger", "woman scorned" and the "predatory woman", which cast doubt on the alleged victims’ claims and suggest that they are lying. Waterhouse-Watson calls this a "narrative immunity" for footballers against allegations of sexual assault. This book details how popular conceptions of masculinity and femininity inform the way footballers’ bodies, team bonding, women, sex and alcohol are portrayed in the media, and connects stories relating to the cases with sports reporting generally. Uncovering similar patterns of narrative, grammar and discourse across these distinct yet related fields, Waterhouse-Watson shows how these discourses are naturalised, with reports on the cases intertwining with broader discourses of football reporting to provide immunity. Despite the prevalence of stories that discredit the alleged victims, Waterhouse-Watson also examines attempts to counter these pervasive rape myths, articulating successful strategies and elucidating the limitations built into journalistic practices, and language itself.
Athletic and Orthopedic Injury Assessment: A Case Study Approach
by David C. Berry Michael G. Miller Leisha M. BerryThe case studies in this book use authentic injury assessment examples to help readers link theory and clinical practice with the goal of becoming competent clinicians. The situations are realistic and present more than 130 of the injuries that athletic trainers may encounter in the real world. The questions that accompany the cases ask readers to identify clinical and differential diagnoses, critique the evaluating clinician's actions, recommend treatment, comment on ethical choices, and make many of the decisions they will face in the field. The cases encourage readers to think and problem solve; evidence-based answers (for select cases in the text and for all cases in the instructor's manual) ensure that the recommended clinical decisions are based on the best available research, clinical expertise, and patient preferences rather than on anecdotal practice.
Athletic and Orthopedic Injury Assessment: Case Responses and Interpretations
by David C. Berry Michael G. Miller Leisha M. BerryAthletic and Orthopedic Injury Assessment: Case Responses and Interpretations is a companion book that provides responses and interpretations to the case studies in Athletic and Orthopedic Injury Assessment: A Case Study Approach. Research, evidence-based practices, and professional experience form the basis of these responses and interpretations. The suggested answers for case questions include information such as identification of differential and clinical diagnoses, explanations of diagnostic tests, relevant anatomical information, and more. We hope you find this book helpful in responding to the case questions, whether you are an instructor leading class discussions and analyzing student work, a preprofessional preparing to interpret the case scenarios on the BOC national certification examination, or a student seeking to compare the suggested answers with your own analyses.

An Athletic Director’s Story and the Future of College Sports in America
by Robert E. MulcahyRobert Mulcahy’s chronicle of his decade leading Rutgers University athletics is an intriguing story about fulfilling a vision. The goal was to expand pride in intercollegiate athletics. Redirecting a program with clearer direction and strategic purpose brought encouraging results. Advocating for finer coaching and improved facilities, he and Rutgers achieved national honors in Division I sports. Unprecedented alumni interest and support for athletics swelled across the Rutgers community. His words and actions were prominent during a nationally-reported incident involving student athletes. When the Rutgers Women’s Basketball team players were slandered by racist remarks from a popular radio talk show host, Mulcahy met it head on. With the coach and players, he set an inspiring example for defending character and values. Though Mr. Mulcahy left Rutgers in 2009, his memoir reflects continued devotion to intercollegiate athletics and student athletes. His insights for addressing several leading issues confronting Division I sports today offer guidelines for present and future athletic directors to follow.
