Intelligent Tinkering: Bridging the Gap between Science and Practice (Science Practice Ecological Restoration)
by Robert J. CabinRobert J. Cabin explores the relationship between science and practice in ecological restoration. Despite the often distinct cultures and methodologies of scientists and practitioners, Cabin shows how each has a vital role in effective restoration and offers suggestions for improving working relationships. One approach he advocates is what he calls "intelligent tinkering," where practitioners employ the same kind of careful but informal trial-and-error strategy followed by such groups as indigenous peoples and hobbyist mechanics. Cabin illustrates the power of intelligent tinkering using examples from his own work and other restoration projects. The gap between science and practice is a widespread problem across all fields of applied science. Intelligent Tinkering offers an insightful look at the underlying causes of the problem, along with invaluable suggestions for addressing it.
Intelligent Tire Systems (Synthesis Lectures on Advances in Automotive Technology)
by Amir Khajepour Hassan Askari Nan XuVehicle performance is largely controlled by the tire dynamic characteristics mediated by forces and moments generated at the tire-road contact patch. The tire may undergo deformations that increase the longitudinal and lateral forces within the contact patch. It is crucial to develop a model for the accurate prediction of tire characteristics, as this will enable optimization of the overall performance of vehicles. Research has been conducted to identify new strategies for tire measurement and modeling vehicle dynamics analysis. Autonomous vehicles (AVs), electric vehicles (EVs), shared sets, and connected vehicles have further revolutionized interdisciplinary research on vehicle and tire systems. The performance and reliability of vehicle active safety and advanced driver assistance systems (ADASs) are primarily influenced by the tire force capacity, which cannot be measured. High active safety and optimized ADAS are particularly crucial for automated driving systems (ADS) to guarantee passenger safety in intelligent transportation settings. The establishment of online measurement or estimation tools for tire states, especially for autonomous vehicles, is critical.

Intelligent Transport Systems
by Nazmul Siddique Shyam Chakraborty Syed Faraz HasanFocusing on the nuts and bolts of wireless network access for computers on board vehicles, this volume shows how in-car computerization now does much more than merely act as a glorified map-reader. Wireless communication is transforming road travel in ways previously undreamt of, allowing vehicles to "talk" to a wider network and monitor road conditions, potential delays and traffic congestion, all automatically. Toll payments can be made without opening the driver's window on a cold day, while vehicles might themselves take active steps to avoid collisions. It is the connection between on-board computers and wireless access points, ubiquitous in most cities now, that is a key area of research. Moving vehicles transfer their communications to new points as they progress, and this causes delays, known as "handover latency". In this book, new stochastic models are developed to map the disruption when connecting to 802.11 WLAN points. It details the application of stochastic tools to analyzing communication networks, as well as previous literature on handover latency and relevant mathematical modeling. Finally, it presents a scheme for monitoring traffic congestion using WLAN connectivity. This volume will be a useful addition to the libraries both of wireless communication students and those studying probability theory.

Intelligent Transportation Systems: From Good Practices to Standards
by Paolo PaganoIntelligent Transport Systems (ITS) are the way forward for sustainable growth of mobility at all levels (local, regional, national, transnational). The book reviews the current status of Research & Development. It includes connected (and autonomous) cars and buses, real-world large-scale field trials, data analysis and assessment of technological solutions. Standards and normative aspects in the domain of Electronic Fee Collection and Cooperative Systems oriented to probe data collection, safety and non-safety critical applications in vehicular networks, are studied. The book provides the rational, perspectives, and technical issues for the implementation of ITS solutions in a genuine inter-modal scenario, taking the example of a Mediterranean seaport, actively involved in testing and validation of ITS standards. The novelty of this book is that it covers R&D, standards, and pilots, all under one cover. Rather than stressing the novelty in ICT, the authors have presented the need for system-level integration, assessment of existing (standard) solutions, and piloting experiments in real-world industrial scenarios.
