He's spent so much time studying the scriptures and thick books on archaeology that he can't carry on a normal conversation with other kids. That's why they consider him a nerd. Through an unusual chain of events, these two opposites become fast friends. It all began when Garth told Jim a simple truth: "They really existed once, you know." "Who?" Jim asked. "Nephites," Garth replied. "Every character in the Book of Mormon ate, slept, died, was buried . . ." That statement, taken for granted before, would soon echo deeply in the two boys' minds--because they were on the trail of a chilling secret.

Donovan, Senior Reviewer, Midwest Book Review Tenth Grade Angst (a sequel to Ninth Grade Blues, 2017) continues the story of four teens as they negotiate the roller-coaster ride of high school. Now sophomores, they grapple with growing independence and changing dreams and ambitions for their future. Luke: a shy, hard-working boy from the wrong side of the tracks, Luke continues to come out of his shell with the friendly encouragement of Mia. His love for hunting, fishing, and all things nature-related keeps him sane and grounded, while ongoing problems with his dad worsen and require him to make some startling adjustments. Elly: a bit overweight and a lot insecure in her freshman year, Elly joins her mom at the gym, sheds a few pounds and discovers she can set her cap for star football players. But is that always a good idea? A hot date doesn’t work out the way she expected–at all. Marcus: a football and basketball star, Marcus comes down to earth–discovering that he really does have limits to what he can expect from his athletic career. And, a series of rebuffs and rejections lead him to reflect on the best way to a girl’s heart. Hint: just for a change, try caring about what she thinks. Mia: a straight-A student who looks like a good bet to be the class valedictorian, Mia is also on track to realize her dream of becoming a pediatrician and moving to Texas to help children of her own heritage. But what does that imply for the relationships she is developing in high school? And just how angry will her poppa get if she insists on dating Luke?

Terror and Counter-Terror in Contemporary British Children’s Literature (Children's Literature and Culture)

by Blanka Grzegorczyk

The widespread threat of terrorist and counter-terrorist violence in the twenty-first century has created a globalized context for social interactions, transforming the ways in which young people relate to the world around them and to one another. This is the first study that reads post-9/11 and 7/7 British writing for the young as a response to this contemporary predicament, exploring how children’s writers find the means to express the local conditions and different facets of the global wars around terror. The texts examined in this book reveal a preoccupation with overcoming various forms of violence and prejudice faced by certain groups within post-terror Britain, as well as a concern with mapping out their social relations with other groups, and those concerns are set against the recurring themes of racist paranoia, anti-immigrant hostility, politicized identities, and growing up in countries transformed by the effects of terror and counter-terror. The book concentrates on the relationship between postcolonial and critical race studies, Britain’s colonial legacy, and literary representations of terrorism, tracing thematic and formal similarities in the novels of both established and emerging children’s writers such as Elizabeth Laird, Sumia Sukkar, Alan Gibbons, Muhammad Khan, Bali Rai, Nikesh Shukla, Malorie Blackman, Claire McFall, Miriam Halahmy, and Sita Brahmachari. In doing so, this study maps new connections for scholars, students, and readers of contemporary children’s fiction who are interested in how such writing addresses some of the most pressing issues affecting us today, including survival after terror, migration, and community building.

Terrors of the Forest: A Gameknight999 Adventure (The Mystery Of Entity303 #2)

by Mark Cheverton

Gameknight999 reenters Minecraft to find it completely changed. There are new monsters that he's never seen before: giants and skeleton druids and pinch beetles and king spiders and mistwolves. Villages are larger than ever, and more heavily fortified; Minecraft had become much more dangerous. Even the very trees had changed, with some of them reaching up taller than the User-that-is-not-a-user ever thought was imaginable. There's a diamond block portal outside of Crafter's village, and rumors are spreading that a strange user was seen coming out of the portal with a young boy, before they disappeared into another portal, leaving behind a square hole one block deep with a ring of flowers around it. Gameknight recognizes it as the portal to reach the Twilight Forest mod. But how can there be mods here in the vanilla Minecraft? The User-that-is-not-a-user follows the trail, and finds odd mentions of "303" and "White Castle. " But what do the clues mean? Just how dangerous is this new user to Minecraft, and where is he taking the young NPC? Only Gameknight999 will be able to find out. Sky Pony Press, with our Good Books, Racehorse and Arcade imprints, is proud to publish a broad range of books for young readers--picture books for small children, chapter books, books for middle grade readers, and novels for young adults. Our list includes bestsellers for children who love to play Minecraft; stories told with LEGO bricks; books that teach lessons about tolerance, patience, and the environment, and much more. In particular, this adventure series is created especially for readers who love the fight of good vs. evil, magical academies like Hogwarts in the Harry Potter saga, and games like Minecraft, Terraria, and Pokemon GO. While not every title we publish becomes a New York Times bestseller or a national bestseller, we are committed to books on subjects that are sometimes overlooked and to authors whose work might not otherwise find a home.
