The Challenge Of Democracy

by Kenneth Janda

The Challenge of Democracy Is not a book centered on current events. Rather, we use the recent past to illustrate enduring features of American government. Our text centers on three themes that help readers recognize and analyze the difficult choices they face in politics. The first is the clash among the values of freedom, order, and equality. These value conflicts are prominent in contemporary American society, and they help explain political controversy and consensus in earlier eras. We demonstrate that many of the nation's most controversial issues represent conflicts among individuals or groups who hold differing views on the values of freedom, order, and equality. Views on issues such as abortion are not just isolated opinions; they also reflect choices about the philosophy citizens want government to follow. Yet choosing among these values is difficult, some¬times excruciatingly so.

The Challenge of Democracy: Government in America

by Kenneth Janda Jeffrey M. Berry Jerry Goldman

The Challenge of Democracy is well-known for its exploration of two themes: the conflicting values of freedom, order, and equality and the majoritarianism vs. pluralism debate. In addition, a focus on globalization and its implications helps students put American government in a broader context. Current coverage includes the latest developments in American Government, including the results of key races in the 2006 mid-term election. Student Achievement Series: The Challenge of Democracy is an innovative text and part of a program developed in partnership with teachers and students to meet the learning, study, and assessment goals necessary for student success. Through extensive research and focus groups conducted with a diverse cross-section of students, Houghton Mifflin presents a groundbreaking solution for skills mastery, understanding, and retention. Feedback from students has been instrumental in all aspects of development--from design and pedagogy to testing and assessment to title and packaging. These elements culminate in a textbook program that reflects the way students learn and study best. As with all texts in the Student Achievement Series, The Challenge of Democracy incorporates concise, to-the-point coverage; eliminates extraneous material; integrates pedagogy that reinforces key concepts; features a strong, supporting web component for review, testing, and assessment purposes; and provides students with real value for their educational dollar.

Challenges 3: Reading and Vocabulary for Academic Success

by Cynthia A. Boardman Laurie Barton

The Challenges textbook series helps students become better readers through explicit teaching of reading skills and strategies that will break counter-productive habits, such as word-for-word translation. Vocabulary is a major focus of the series as well because good readers know a lot of words. Challenges 3 (the low-advanced to advanced level) has six units with two chapters in each. Each unit begins with an introduction to the topic--generally a one-page activity to activate students' interest and background knowledge. To help prepare advanced students for authentic college content, each reading is introduced by a discussion of its genre, so students will encounter 12 different genres (e. g. , book review, scientific essay, persuasive essay, biography, promotional writing). Each unit also features a special focus on one academic skill--for example, outlining and summarizing--to provide students with additional practice in areas that will be useful in college/university courses. Like Books 1 and 2, study tips are presented as well (e. g. , using search engines and research databases, communicating with instructors/professors). The book also includes timed/paced readings, which are important to developing reading fluency.

by Mark A. Radice

Intended for the music student, the professional musician, and the music lover,Chamber Music: An Essential Historycovers repertoire from the Renaissance to the present, crossing genres to include string quartets, piano trios, clarinet quintets, and other groupings. Radice gives a thorough overview and history of this long-established and beloved genre, typically performed by groups of a size to fit into spaces such as homes or churches and tending originally toward the string and wind instruments rather than percussion. Radice begins with chamber music's earliest expressions in the seventeenth century, discusses its most common elements in terms of instruments and compositional style, and then investigates how those elements play out across several centuries of composers- among them Mozart, Bach, Haydn, and Brahms- and national interpretations of chamber music. WhileChamber Music: An Essential Historyis intended largely as a textbook, it will also find an audience as a companion volume for musicologists and fans of classical music, who may be interested in the background to a familiar and important genre.
