Father of Waters (The White Indian Series #18)

by Donald Clayton Porter

It was the worst butchery ever seen in Tennessee's virgin brush country. Innocent women had been brutalized, their children savagely slain. Egan Kirk, choked by raging grief and swearing eternal revenge against his family's foul murderers, had already killed most of the vile Cherokee renegades responsible. All but one He calls himself Atarho, the Spirit of Evil. Now he has viciously attacked a party of peaceful settlers and abducted five young maidens to be sold into Spanish bondage. To this bloodthirsty brave, there is only one way the white man can pay for stealing the Indian's noble birthright--and that's with his life. DIVIDED PEACE--As Kirk follows Atarho's trail of death and as tomahawk meets bullet and blade, it falls to the mighty Seneca warrior RENNO, the legendary White Indian, to prevent the senseless massacre from erupting into the most horrific bloodbath in Western history. In Philadelphia the Great White Thinkers try to forge peace among the divided nations while Renno embarks on a desperate mission that will take him from the teeming city of New Orleans to the primitive jungles of the Yucatan. And there, amid the sacred temples of the Mayans, he will meet his most treacherous foe yet.

Feminism and the Western in Film and Television

by Mark E. Wildermuth

This book works to complicate and push against common arguments that the Western from its inception is an anti-feminist genre. By focusing on representations of women professionals in Westerns, it shows that women in cinematic and televisual Westerns sometimes do acquire agency and empowerment in the private and public realms, despite our culture’s tendency to gender the former as feminine and the latter as solely masculine. The study reviews the relationship of these progressive Westerns to both explicit and latent feminist ideologies relevant to their times, as the films evolved from the 1930s to the twenty-first century.

Fencing the Sky: A Novel

by James Galvin

A cattleman flees the scene of an accidental murder in “the most ambitious and original novel about the modern West to have appeared in some time” (Kirkus Reviews).Stepping his horse through the lush, beaver-worked draw looking for stray cows, Mike Arans never imagined that, moments later, he’d find himself swinging a nylon loop around Merriweather Snipes and pulling until his neck snapped. Once Snipes was dead, Mike fished a notepad and a stub of pencil from his pocket, wrote “I did this,” signed his name, and stuffed the note into Snipes’s breast pocket. Then Mike rode to his house, stocked up on supplies, and rode due west.Fencing the Sky is the story of how circumstances spiral out of control, the story of gross indifference and avarice in the face of breathtaking beauty. Ultimately, James Galvin’s novel is a book about violence and how it destroys lives when the land is at stake. This long-awaited lyrical first novel is nothing less than the story of the disappearance of the American West.“A unique and extraordinary book, a mixture of novel and natural history wherein Galvin reinvents the form, the true mark of a genuine artist . . . I can’t recommend it too highly.” —Jim Harrison, author of Legends of the Fall

Fiddlefoot

by Luke Short

A hard-charging tale of oppression and revenge by an award-winning author who helped define the western genre. Frank Chess didn&’t care for much in this world. Especially himself. So taking a job for local big shot Rhino Hulst was an easy choice. Each day drifted into the next: running Rhino&’s crooked errands, blowing his meager pay in the nearest poker game, drinking it down in the closest saloon, and handing it over to the next soiled dove. All because Rhino killed a man in cold blood, pinned it on Frank, and now holds the hangman&’s rope over him. And who would give a damn? Frank came into town a drifter—a fiddlefoot, they called him—worth nothing to no one. He didn&’t matter. But none of the townspeople know Frank. Where he came from. What he&’s done. And when he finally remembers what it&’s like to care about something, they have no idea how much hell he&’s about to bring down on them all. Along with legendary authors like Zane Grey and Louis L&’Amour, Luke Short helped transform the stories of the American West from dime-store pulp into a respected and immensely popular literary genre. Originally serialized in the Saturday Evening Post, Fiddlefoot combines Short&’s plainspoken style with the hard-edged authenticity that marks his novels as true classics of western adventure.

Fight At Four Corners

by Nelson C. Nye

Twisting in the saddle for a quick look behind I found another smudge there—this undeniably dust. Swiveling round I found Bill Hazel’s gaze locked in the same direction. Edwardo came pelting back to swing his mount alongside Surefoot. “San Carlos Apaches!” “How do you know?” I rasped at him, jolted. “In here I know,” he cried, thumping his chest. “No Navajos there—renegade Apaches ride under that dust!” . Probably took one Indian to recognize another. “Come on,” I growled, “let’s get these hides movin’.” With any luck, I thought, my own ponies bred for speed should be able to keep ahead of them. . . .
