A Need for Violence (The Battling Harrigans of the Frontier #2)
by Dusty RichardsThe latest installment in Spur Award and Will Rogers Medallion Award-winning author Dusty Richards&’ newest action-packed western series, The Fighting Harrigans of the Frontier. Spring, 1850. After a brutally long winter in the Rockies, Mack Harrigan and his growing family have learned to manage the harsh realities of frontier life. Their new friends, the Shoshone, have taught them the skills they need to survive in this rugged land, from tracking and hunting to fishing and foraging. But the skills they need most are those of the Shoshone warrior—when their camp is attacked by an enemy tribe. . . . Sometimes there is a need for violence. This is one of those times. The attackers are merciless. They crush the skulls of their victims. Slice off their scalps. And kidnap children as prisoners of war. The Harrigans are horrified by the bloodshed and brutality of the attack—and are determined to fight back alongside the Shoshone. But their mission to save the children will ultimately send the battling Harrigans even deeper into the wild frontier. Farther west than most dare to travel. And closer to finding the American dream—if they survive. . . .
A Newer World: Kit Carson, John C. Fremont and the Claiming of the American West
by David RobertsJohn C. Frémont, nearly forgotten today, was one of the giants of nineteenth-century America. He led five expeditions into the American West in the 1840s and 1850s, covering a greater area than any other explorer. His expedition reports -- ghost-written by his beautiful and talented wife, Jessie Benton Frémont -- were bestsellers in their day. Riding the wave of his popularity, he captured the Republican Party nomination for president in 1856 but narrowly lost the election. Frémont's scout on three of his expeditions was Kit Carson. Frémont fancied himself a mountaineer, and he possessed great stamina and courage, but he lacked Carson's skills and knowledge. The only expedition Frémont led without Carson was a disaster that, like the better-known Donner Party debacle, culminated in one of the rare documented instances of cannibalism in American history. A Newer Worldis the fascinating story of the Frémont-Carson expeditions and of two men, utterly unalike in so many ways, who became friends as well as fellow explorers. Frémont owed his life to Carson, who saved him on several occasions, while the legend of Kit Carson, the greatest mountain man of his day, grew out of Frémont's expedition reports. The Frémont-Carson expeditions are second only to Lewis and Clark's in their significance for America's western expansion. Their 1845-46 campaign, for example, helped to precipitate the Mexican-American War and led to the wresting of California from Mexico. Carson is often remembered today for his 1863-64 roundup of Apaches and Navajos, leading to the infamous Long Walk. David Roberts demonstrates that Carson, who was twice married to Indian women, was profoundly ambivalent about the campaign, which was ordered by an Army officer who was his superior. Throughout the book, Roberts draws on little-known primary sources in telling the dramatic stories of these expeditions. He shows how Frémont saw himself as a historical figure, especially in his reports, while Carson -- taciturn where Frémont was outspoken, modest where Frémont was boastful, and, significantly, illiterate -- was oblivious to his own fame. Yet it was Carson who underwent an evolution from an Indian killer to an Indian advocate. In addition to his archival research, Roberts traveled the routes of Frémont and Carson's expeditions to gain a firsthand knowledge of the territory they explored. In analyzing how Frémont and Carson advanced the Americanizing of the West, Roberts writes with a modern-day sensitivity to the Indians, for whom these expeditions were a tragedy.

A Place to Grow: Women in the American West
by Glenda RileyThese are essays focused on women and the frontier (abbreviated from the Foreword in the book). The Western History in the 1990s has research on western women that is rich, varied, and increasingly sophisticated. But answers to crucial controversies remain elusive. Did the American West offer women a place to grow? Did women find more economic opportunities in the West than elsewhere? Were western women more politically active and effective than their eastern counterparts? Did the West's reputed liberalism and democracy shape the lives of all western women for the better? Or did women of some social classes, races, and ethnic backgrounds face difficulty? I have selected ten essays that I have found especially useful in explaining the nature and importance of these issues. in the classroom as well as for audiences of both colleagues and laypersons. I have rounded out the selection with an essay written especially for this volume and with a large collection of primary documents. The result is a text that addresses these questions and, in the process, reveals both the complexity of research issues and the multiplicity of women's perspectives. These essays discuss and analyze a variety of topics concerning women's lives and experiences in the American West. Interspersed among the essays, the documents not only give the flavor of women's attitudes and reactions to issues of the day, but also demonstrate the importance of women's own words as historical evidence. The selections presented here, which explore gender, race, class, region, and other variables, are arranged in five sections: 1) stereotypes of western women, 2) women and westward trails, 3) women migrants and Native Americans, 4) women and work, and 5) women, adaptation, and change. Almost every type of western woman is represented, although archivists and scholars have only recently begun to retrieve other ethnic groups.
