India's Struggle for Independence - Competitive Exam

by Bipin Chandra

India’s struggle for Independence by Bipin Chandra is your go to book for an in-depth and detailed overview on Indian independence movement . Indian freedom struggle is one of the most important parts of its history. A lot has been written and said about it, but there still remains a gap. Rarely do we get to hear accounts of the independence from the entire country and not just one region at one place. This book fits in perfectly in this gap and also provides a narration on the impact this movement had on the people. Bipin Chandra’s book is a well-documented history of India's freedom struggle against the British rule. It is one of the most accurate books which have been painstakingly written after thorough research based on legal and valid verbal and written sources. It maps the first war of independence that started with Mangal Pandey’s mutiny and witnessed the gallant effort of Sri Rani Laxmi Bai. Many of the pages of this book are dedicated to Mahatma Gandhi’s non-cooperation and the civil disobedience movements. It contains detailed description of Subash Chandra Bose’s weapon heavy tactics and his charisma. This book includes all the independence movements and fights, irrespective of their size and impact, covering India in its entirety. Although these movements varied in means and ideas, but they shared a common goal of independence. This book contains oral and written narratives from different parts of the country, making this book historically rich and diverse. The book captures the evolution of Indian independence struggle in full detail and leaves no chapter of this story untouched. This book is a good read for the students of Indian modern history and especially for students who are preparing for UPSC examination and have taken History as their subject.

Indian Government and Politics

by Bidyut Chakrabarty and Rajendra Kumar Pandey

Indian Government and Politics will serve as a standard textbook for undergraduate students of Political Science and Public Administration. It is also an incisive manual for the candidates appearing for various UPSC and civil service examinations, besides being invaluable for students and researchers of political science in general, and post-colonial contemporary Indian politics in particular. The book explains the complexities of the Indian political process and its effects on the constitutional institutions of India. Adopting a multi-disciplinary approach, it takes a fresh look at the socio-political and economic scenario of contemporary India and unearths new areas of inquiry by posing pertinent questions on the nature of Indian politics. The strength of the book lies in its focused content, which thoroughly analyses the political happenings in India and studies how the political institutions have emerged and changed since the end of colonial rule in the country.

Ex-Combatants’ Voices

by John D. Brewer and Azrini Wahidin

This book develops the discourse on the experiences of ex-combatants and their transition from war to peace, from the perspective of scholars across disciplines. Ex-combatants are often overlooked and ignored in the post-conflict search for memory and understanding, resulting in their voice being excluded or distorted. This collection seeks to disclose something of the lived experience of ex-combatants who have made the transition from war to peace to help to understand some of the difficulties they have encountered in social and emotional reintegration in the wake of combat. These include: motivations and mobilizations to participation in military struggle; the material difficulties experienced in social reintegration after the war; the emotional legacies of conflict; the discourses they utilize to reconcile their past in a society moving forward from conflict toward peace; and ex-combatants’ subsequent engagement – or not – in peacebuilding. It also examines the contributions that former combatants have made to post-conflict compromise, reconciliation and peacebuilding. It focusses on male non-state actors, women, child soldiers and, unusually, state veterans, and complements previous volumes which captured the voices of victims in Northern Ireland, South Africa and Sri Lanka. This volume speaks to those working in the areas of sociology, criminology, security studies, politics, and international relations, and professionals working in social justice and human rights NGOs.

Ex-Combatants, Religion, and Peace in Northern Ireland

by David Mitchell and John D. Brewer and Gerard Leavey

Studies of Northern Ireland's ex-combatants ignore religion, while advocates of religious interventions in transitional justice exaggerate its influence. Using interview data with ex-combatants, this book explores religious influences upon violence and peace, and develops a model for evaluating the role of religion in transitional justice.

A Unifying Framework for Formal Theories of Novelty

by Terrance Boult and Walter Scheirer

This book presents the first unified formalization for defining novelty across the span of machine learning, symbolic-reasoning, and control and planning-based systems.  Dealing with novelty, things not previously seen by a system, is a critical issue for building vision-systems and general intelligent systems.  The book presents examples of using this framework to define and evaluate in multiple domains including  image recognition image-based open world learning,  hand-writing and author analysis,  CartPole Control,  Image Captioning, and Monopoly.  Chapters are written by well-known contributors to this new and emerging field.  In addition, examples are provided from multiple areas, such as machine-learning based control problems, symbolic reasoning, and multi-player games.

An Introduction to Computational Fluid Mechanics by Example

by Chuen-Yen Chow and Sedat Biringen

This new book builds on the original classic textbook entitled: An Introduction to Computational Fluid Mechanics by C. Y. Chow which was originally published in 1979. In the decades that have passed since this book was published the field of computational fluid dynamics has seen a number of changes in both the sophistication of the algorithms used but also advances in the computer hardware and software available. This new book incorporates the latest algorithms in the solution techniques and supports this by using numerous examples of applications to a broad range of industries from mechanical and aerospace disciplines to civil and the biosciences. The computer programs are developed and available in MATLAB. In addition the core text provides up-to-date solution methods for the Navier-Stokes equations, including fractional step time-advancement, and pseudo-spectral methods. Machine Learning for Data Streams

by Bernhard Pfahringer and Albert Bifet and Ricard Gavalda and Geoff Holmes

A hands-on approach to tasks and techniques in data stream mining and real-time analytics, with examples in MOA, a popular freely available open-source software framework. Today many information sources—including sensor networks, financial markets, social networks, and healthcare monitoring—are so-called data streams, arriving sequentially and at high speed. Analysis must take place in real time, with partial data and without the capacity to store the entire data set. This book presents algorithms and techniques used in data stream mining and real-time analytics. Taking a hands-on approach, the book demonstrates the techniques using MOA (Massive Online Analysis), a popular, freely available open-source software framework, allowing readers to try out the techniques after reading the explanations. The book first offers a brief introduction to the topic, covering big data mining, basic methodologies for mining data streams, and a simple example of MOA. More detailed discussions follow, with chapters on sketching techniques, change, classification, ensemble methods, regression, clustering, and frequent pattern mining. Most of these chapters include exercises, an MOA-based lab session, or both. Finally, the book discusses the MOA software, covering the MOA graphical user interface, the command line, use of its API, and the development of new methods within MOA. The book will be an essential reference for readers who want to use data stream mining as a tool, researchers in innovation or data stream mining, and programmers who want to create new algorithms for MOA.
