A Wonder-Book for Girls and Boys
by Nathaniel HawthorneSix legends of Greek mythology, retold for children by Nathaniel Hawthorne. Included are The Gorgon's Head, The Golden Touch, The Paradise of Children, The Three Golden Apples, The Miraculous Pitcher, and The Chimaera. In 1838, Hawthorne suggested to Henry Wadsworth Longfellow that they collaborate on a story for children based on the legend of the Pandora's Box, but this never materialized. He wrote A Wonder Book between April and July 1851, adapting six legends most freely from Charles Anton's A Classical Dictionary (1842). He set out deliberately to "modernize" the stories, freeing them from what he called "cold moonshine" and using a romantic, readable style that was criticized by adults but proved universally popular with children. With full-color illustrations throughout by Arthur Rackham.
The Yellow Wallpaper and Other Writings
by Charlotte Perkins GilmanCharlotte Perkins Gilman (1860–1935) championed women’s rights in her prolific fiction, nonfiction, and poetry. Discover three influential works by one of America’s first feminists in their unabridged form: the short story The Yellow Wallpaper, a haunting interpretation of postpartum depression; the feminist utopian novel Herland; and Women and Economics, which when published in 1898 established Gilman as a sociologist, philosopher, ethicist, and social critic, and is considered by many to be her greatest work.
Young Goodman Brown
by Nathaniel HawthorneNathaniel Hawthorne was one of the greatest American writers of the nineteenth century, and some of his most powerful work was in the form of fable-like tales that make rich use of allegory and symbolism. The dark beauty and moral force of his imagination are evident in this short story by one of the early masters of the form, in which a young man who believes he has witnessed a satanic initiation can never see his pious neighbors the same way again. A Vintage Short.
