Black-eyed Suzie

by Susan Shaw

Grade 6-9-Twelve-year-old Suzie has completely lost touch with reality. She is unable to eat, talk, sleep, or walk and sits in a cramped fetal position and cries. Her mother is infuriated by this "stage" she's in; her father is concerned but distant. It is only when Suzie's uncle forces the family to acknowledge that something is wrong and she is hospitalized that the child can begin to heal. The book is narrated by the inner voice of a character who can't speak because she simply "doesn't have any words," and she is the only character who is fully developed. Details of the abuse that caused Suzie's breakdown slowly emerge, but when the girl is confronted with the danger her older sister is in, she heroically responds. Once the truth is revealed, Suzie's recovery is unrealistically quick, but this is a riveting story that could well serve to help other children deal with a difficult family situation.

The Ocean Within

by V. M. Caldwell

Caldwell's first novel, told from the perspective of 11-year-old Elizabeth Lawson, offers an insightful yet somewhat limited view of a reticent foster child. Recently adopted, Elizabeth is overwhelmed when she, her three new siblings and a mass of Sheridan cousins gather for an annual month-long visit at Grandmother Sheridan's house by the sea. Elizabeth feels like an outsider and, though quietly cooperative during the reunion, she refuses to participate in family rituals and games. Her favorite times are spent by herself at the ocean, perched on a rock while the others swim and play on the beach. Most of the Sheridans are frustrated by Elizabeth's seeming indifference, but perceptive, firm Grandmother (whom Elizabeth secretly calls "Iron Woman") and youngest cousin Petey never give up trying to draw her out of her shell. At first, readers may, like Elizabeth, find it difficult to differentiate individual personalities from among the crowd of happy, bubbly Sheridan children; but as the story progresses, the characters' distinguishing traits become visible. Still, the occasionally overwritten narrative (e.g., when Elizabeth offers to help Petey with his homework, "Hope warred against disbelief in his eyes. Hope won, and he nodded") leaves many questions unanswered concerning the protagonist herself. Little information is given about her past, nor is much evidence offered as to why her new parents are so eager to adopt her. Yet her discomfort and yearning to belong somewhere will be strongly felt. If Elizabeth's motivations and history are muddy, her emotions are crystal clear. Ages 8-13.

by Richie Tankersley Cusik

Danger Lucy tried to pull free. No more visions! Make them stop! But the stranger's hand squeezed tighter, sending a chaos of sensations to her very core. Burning like the moon, red just like the moon, burning eyes, burning lips, burning souls "Is he?" she heard him ask again. "Is Byron dead?" Lucy felt the walls sway around her, the stones shift beneath her feet. For one brief second the young man's eyes actually seemed to change color, black and amber fusing together in a liquid, luminous glow--yet she convinced herself it was only a trick of her own unshed tears. She tried to answer him--wanted to answer him--but her thoughts were all muddled, and she was so hot, and he was holding her so tight . . . so tight . . . "Yes." Don't make me say it--I can't bear to say it! "Yes! He's dead!" "You're sure?" Memories stabbed through her head, pierced through her heart. "If you were really his brother, you wouldn't be asking me these questions! If you were really his brother, you'd already know--"
