Fireworks Tonight!

by Martha Brenner

From the Book Jacket: Streams of sparks and sprays of colored stars light up the dark sky, thundering blasts echo all around ... FIREWORKS TONIGHT! For centuries man has been playing with fire with dazzling, sometimes dire, results-and few things have as much power to astound and intrigue us. Martha Brenner's research has turned up a wealth of fascinating information on the world of pyrotechnics. She covers the history of fireworks from the primitive firecrackers developed some 2000 years ago in China to the breathtaking special effects of today, the tragic accidents that have led to current laws regulating their use, the intriguing step-by-step development of a modern fireworks show from the drawing board to the actual shooting. How are fireworks made? Very carefully! And almost entirely by hand, because metal machinery produces heat and static electricity that could easily ignite an entire building full of explosives. Who makes fireworks? Most are manufactured by a handful of dynamic, devoted families that have passed on their tricks and trademarks for generations. Fireworks Tonight! gives us profiles of them and their particular pyrotechnical styles. How do fireworks work? Martha Brenner explains that, too-in clear, scientific detail. And there's more. Fireworks Tonight! includes a trip behind the scenes at a fireworks show, a visit to a manufacturing plant, a section on safety, a list of the 50 states' current laws on their sale and use, an illustrated spectators' guide-to help fire works fans tell a roman candle from a rocket and a list of notable fireworks facts: the biggest display in history, the loudest, the longest .. . Generously illustrated with over 60 photo graphs and prints, Fireworks Tonight! is a lively, accurate, and comprehensive introduction to a subject of universal appeal.

Cold Sweat (Hardy Boys Casefiles #63)

by Franklin W. Dixon

From the back of the book: An exercise in murder! Will wonders never cease? Chet Morton, the original couch potato, has joined Bayport's new state-of-the- art health club. But the Hardys know what's really on his mind, and her name is Dawn Reynolds, aerobics instructor. One mystery solved, an even bigger one awaits: The boys have found that working out in the club's weight training room may be hazardous to their health. Chet ends up in the hospital, and another of the club's members ends up in the bay...dead! Frank and Joe suspect that an underworld gang has muscled in on the action. The Hardys know they're in for the fight of their lives because when push comes to shove, these are the kind of thugs who'll stop pumping iron and start spraying lead! =============== From inside the book: PUMPING IRON "Joe, you can't rush weight training," Chet said as Joe continued to bench press two hundred pounds. "Don't tell me what to do," Joe wheezed. He launched into another set of repetitions, struggling not to let the weight drop down on his chest. Chet reached for the barbell. Furious, Joe lowered the weight and pressed it up again. "Back off, Morton: You're making me look bad." As the muscles in Joe's arms started to shake, the barbell wobbled. Then the weights on one side slid to the end of the bar, and the unbalanced bar tipped under Joe's trembling grasp. Lunging forward, Chet managed to get hold of the bar but with only one hand. He tried to wrestle the bar up by himself as Joe's strength gave way, but he couldn't get control of it. Now the bar was swinging in a horrible parody of a cheerleader's baton twirl. But in this case the "baton" was moving with more than a hundred pounds of force on its weighted side-straight at Chet Morton's head!

Ithanalin's Restoration (Legends of Ethshar #8)

by Lawrence Watt-Evans

This is the 8th book in the Legends of Ethshar series. It takes place during the time of the sixth novel but is completely independent of that book. It can be read by itself. Kilisha, apprentice to a wizard, is out running errands. Upon her return, she finds that apparently a spell went wrong and the life force of the wizard is scattered through all the furniture. Somehow the furniture is animated and escapes. Most of the novel is spent finding the furniture and confining it. The first few chapters are very funny but eventually the plot slows down and is sometimes very repetitive. While this isn't the best fantasy out there, it isn't bad and gives the reader an idea of the Ethshar series. You can read more about the background at http://www.ethshar.com/ From the book: Kilisha came in sight of the shop and noticed that the drapes were still drawn. The door was open. Wide open. She stopped dead in her tracks. Something was wrong here. Something was very wrong. Ithanalin was crouching on the floor just a few feet inside the door, as if in the process of rising from a sitting position. But he was not moving. He was utterly, perfectly still, his face frozen in a beard-bristling expression of severe annoyance. Kilisha stared at him for a moment. "Master?" Kilisha said. Ithanalin didn't respond. She stepped closer and, very carefully, reached out and touched the immobile wizard. He was still warm, but he didn't react, didn't move. His skin felt lifeless and inert, like sun-warmed leather rather than living flesh. She stared wildly around the room. "Master, what happened?" she wailed. What is an aspiring apprentice wizard to do when she finds her mentor and master frozen in his tracks by mysterious magics?
