Southeast Asia in the New International Era
by Robert Dayley Clark D. NeherThe fifth edition of Southeast Asia in the New International Era highlights the dramatic political events sweeping the region in the first decade of the twenty-first century.

Where economic boom and crisis dominated events in the 1990s, political development and instability defines much of the region today. The promise of democracy in Thailand continues to slide amidst the forces of populism, military coup d'état, constitutional crisis, and the politicization of the judiciary. Political freedom in Indonesia, by contrast, charts new territory as young democratic institutions strengthen. Vietnam's single-party rule delivers ongoing economic promise at the cost of political liberalization while the politics of patronage inhibits Cambodia's overall development. Burma's military regime maintains its grip on power by suppressing political opponents and Malaysia keeps communalism at bay while its long-standing parliamentary majority appears increasingly fragile. In the Philippines, the patterns of personalism, corruption, and elite rule plague democratic political development while Singapore's stable corporatist state stands in contrast to the struggling government of newly formed Timor-Leste. Occurring even as the U. S. War on Terror and China's rise creates new challenges, these changes and others are analyzed in this new fifth edition.

Sovereign Acts: Performing Race, Space, and Belonging in Panama and the Canal Zone
by Katherine A. ZienSovereign Acts explores how artists, activists, and audiences performed and interpreted sovereignty struggles in the Panama Canal Zone, from the Canal Zone’s inception in 1903 to its dissolution in 1999. In popular entertainments and patriotic pageants, opera concerts and national theatre, white U.S. citizens, West Indian laborers, and Panamanian artists and activists used performance as a way to assert their right to the Canal Zone and challenge the Zone’s sovereignty, laying claim to the Zone’s physical space and imagined terrain. By demonstrating the place of performance in the U.S. Empire’s legal landscape, Katherine A. Zien transforms our understanding of U.S. imperialism and its aftermath in the Panama Canal Zone and the larger U.S.-Caribbean world.
Sovereignty: God, State, and Self
by Jean Bethke ElshtainThroughout the history of human intellectual endeavor, sovereignty has cut across the diverse realms of theology, political thought, and psychology. From earliest Christian worship to the revolutionary ideas of Thomas Jefferson and Karl Marx, the debates about sovereignty--complete independence and self-government--have dominated our history. In this seminal work of political history and political theory, leading scholar and public intellectual Jean Bethke Elshtain examines the origins and meanings of "sovereignty" as it relates to all the ways we attempt to explain our world: God, state, and self. Examining the early modern ideas of God which formed the basis for the modern sovereign state, Elshtain carries her research from theology and philosophy into psychology, showing that political theories of state sovereignty fuel contemporary understandings of sovereignty of the self. As the basis of sovereign power shifts from God, to the state, to the self, Elshtain uncovers startling realities often hidden from view. Her thesis consists in nothing less than a thorough-going rethinking of our intellectual history through its keystone concept. The culmination of over thirty years of critically applauded work in feminism, international relations, political thought, and religion, Sovereignty opens new ground for our understanding of our own culture, its past, present, and future.

Soviet-Born: The Afterlives of Migration in Jewish American Fiction
by Karolina KrasuskaIn 2010, when The New Yorker published a list of twenty writers under the age of forty who were “key to their generation,” it included five Jewish-identified writers, two of whom—American Gary Shteyngart and Canadian David Bezmozgis—were Soviet-born. This publicity came after nearly a decade of English-language literary output by Soviet-born writers of all genders in North America. Soviet-Born: The Afterlives of Migration in Jewish American Fiction traces the impact of these now numerous authors—among others, David Bezmozgis, Boris Fishman, Keith Gessen, Sana Krasikov, Ellen Litman, Gary Shteyngart, Anya Ulinich, and Lara Vapnyar—on major coordinates of the Jewish American imaginary. Entering an immigrant, Soviet-born standpoint creates an alternative and sometimes complementary pattern of how the Eastern and Central European past and present resonate with American Jewishness. The novels, short stories, and graphic novels considered here often stage strikingly fresh variations on key older themes, including cultural geography, the memory of World War II and the Holocaust, communism, gender and sexuality, genealogy, and finally, migration. Soviet-Born demonstrates how these diasporic writers, with their critical stance toward identity categories, open up the field of what is canonically Jewish American to broader contemporary debates. This book is also freely available online as an open-access digital edition.

Space, Drama, and Empire: Mapping the Past in Lope de Vega's Comedia (Campos Ibéricos: Bucknell Studies in Iberian Literatures and Cultures)
by Javier LorenzoSpanish poet, playwright, and novelist Félix Lope de Vega (1562–1635) was a key figure of Golden Age Spanish literature, second only in stature to Cervantes, and is considered the founder of Spain’s classical theater. In this rich and informative study, Javier Lorenzo investigates the symbolic use of space in Lope’s drama and its function as an ideological tool to promote an imagined Spanish national past. In specific plays, this book argues, historical landscapes and settings were used to foretell and legitimize the imperial present in Hapsburg Spain, allowing audiences to visualize and plot, as on a map, the country’s expansionist trajectory throughout the centuries. By focusing on connections among space, drama, and empire, this book makes an important contribution to the study of literature and imperialism in early modern Spain and equally to our understanding of the role and political significance of spatiality in Siglo de Oro comedia.
