Exodus
by Leon UrisThe epic saga of Israel's earliest days and the people who fought to make it their home The Exodus was just one ship among many that carried survivors of the Holocaust to Palestine to establish a new nation. But the path that Jewish immigrants took to enter British-controlled Palestine was a difficult one, fraught with danger and political intrigue. The boat was intercepted by British forces and the refugees were placed in concentration camps. Uris's blockbuster novel traces the lives of the men and women who brave British naval blockades to help Israel come into being, from Ari Ben Canaan, who works tirelessly to smuggle in settlers, to Kitty Fremont, an American nurse drawn into a vast, tragic history. Weaving together fact and fiction, history and dramatic storylines, Exodus stands today as one of the most influential narratives of the founding of the State of Israel. This ebook features an illustrated biography of Leon Uris including rare photos from the author's estate.

Experimental Film
by Gemma FilesAn obscure piece of silent film draws a woman into madness in this “remarkable achievement” by the “Canadian horror luminary” (Los Angeles Review of Books). Former film critic Lois Cairns is fired from her teaching job just when her son Clark is diagnosed on the autism spectrum. Caught in a depressive spiral, Lois is convinced she’s a failure who’s spent her adult life writing about other people’s dreams without ever pursuing her own. Then Lois attends a program of experimental film—and notices what might be a major discovery. Could an early twentieth-century socialite who mysteriously disappeared also have been one of Canada’s first female movie-makers? A sampled piece of silver nitrate silent film footage might prove Lois’s case. But soon, Lois’s quest to discover the truth about Mrs. A. Macalla Whitcomb reveals troubling links between her subject’s life and her own. As the malign influence of Whitcomb’s muse creeps into Lois’s life, even her son is endangered. Increasingly ill and unstable, Lois is tormented by an existential nightmare that’s part Wendish folklore and part cinematic hallucination projected off the screen and into real life.
The Experimental Psychology of Mental Retardation
by Donald K. RouthThe renaissance in the field of mental retardation since World War II has been expressed both in research and in renewed practical concern for the plight of the retarded. The 1958 monograph by Masland, Sarason, and Gladwin entitled Mental Subnormality: Biological, Psychological, and Cultural Factors was one spur, if not the only one, to much of the behavioral research which emerged in the late 1950's. Similarly, the Handbook of Mental Deficiency, edited by Norman Ellis and published in 1963, gave theoretical direction to many studies in the years following its appearance. The present book and the symposium on which it is based are an attempt to continue this tradition by presenting theory-based, programmatic research in mental retardation, aimed at the scientific understanding of the psychological processes involved. The final chapter attempts to draw some of the implications of this research for the practical assessment and remediation of retardation. The experimental work reported in this book generally uses rather traditional laboratory tasks, for example, classical conditioning or discrimination learning. But the interest is in underlying processes rather than in such apparent trivia as whether the child blinks his eyelid or which of two stimulus objects he selects. Thus, this book is oriented around the psychological processes of interest, namely learning, attention, memory, language, thinking, and emotion, and concludes with a section on the relationship between these processes and the biological aspects of retardation.
Expiration Day
by William Campbell PowellIt is the year 2049, and humanity is on the brink of extinction…. Tania Deeley has always been told that she's a rarity: a human child in a world where most children are sophisticated androids manufactured by Oxted Corporation. When a decline in global fertility ensued, it was the creation of these near-perfect human copies called teknoids that helped to prevent the utter collapse of society. Though she has always been aware of the existence of teknoids, it is not until her first day at The Lady Maud High School for Girls that Tania realizes that her best friend, Siân, may be one. Returning home from the summer holiday, she is shocked by how much Siân has changed. Is it possible that these changes were engineered by Oxted? And if Siân could be a teknoid, how many others in Tania's life are not real? Driven by the need to understand what sets teknoids apart from their human counterparts, Tania begins to seek answers. But time is running out. For everyone knows that on their eighteenth "birthdays," teknoids must be returned to Oxted—never to be heard from again. Told in diary format, Expiration Day is the powerful and poignant story of a young girl coming of age and discovering what it means to be truly human by a talented debut novelist. At the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied.
