Best Gay Romance

by Tom Graham

Openly erotic and smart, the stories of Best Gay Romance deliver hope and happy endings. Dale Chase's "The Early Show" describes the tantalizing flirtation of two writers who share an eccentric habit of showing up early to Sunday matinees to enjoy the promising half-dark of the theater. S.J. Frost's "No More Mirages" is a tale of romantic destiny set in a dojo, an oasis of bamboo, white mats, and stone sculptures where an actor, bitter from his last break-up, finds himself drawn to a charismatic sensei. And in Rob Rosen's wonderfully funny "Nudie Blues," a romance writer discovers a hole in his backyard fence and the hunky new neighbor behind it.

The Best Gender-Neutral Baby Name Book: The Ultimate Collection of Unique Unisex Names

by Melanie Mannarino

The ultimate collection of unique, unisex baby names—from traditional to modern—including the origin and history of the name, and any cultural icons (men or women) who share the name. What’s in a name? A lot. For generations, they’ve indicated a lot about a person: their family history, personality traits, and qualities—and let’s not forget about nicknames, both good and bad. But while a name may have special significance to the parents who choose it, when you stop and think about it, there’s little else it can reveal about a baby, or the adult that child grows into. Try to accurately imagine what a kid named Frankie looks like...he could be a preschool boy who loves to paint or a teenage girl who is the star of her track team. Same goes for Casey, Jamie, or Taylor. Just as we no longer automatically choose “girl” (pink) or “boy” (blue) colors, today’s parents want their child to have a unique name that defies stereotypes. This one-of-a-kind book compiles the best gender-neutral baby names for your child, along with fun “Top 5 Lists that Make Unique Baby Names” sprinkled throughout (including foods, mythological places, surnames, and more). Use as a guide or read it cover to cover—or dip into specific chapters if you’ve already got a first letter in mind. Have fun, be creative, and know that whatever name you choose, your baby will be a unique and amazing person who defines themselves.

Best Ghost and Horror Stories (Dover Horror Classics)

by Bram Stoker

While best known for literature's greatest, most popular, and most famous vampire novel, Dracula, Bram Stoker also wrote superlative short stories. Indeed, he was a genius at creating horror within the confines of a short tale. Now readers can sample Stoker's mastery in this treasury of fourteen spine-tingling stories. Not all the selections deal with the ghostly and supernatural, but they are always bizarre, and some--like "The Squaw" and "The Burial of the Rats"--are equal to Poe at his best. In addition to these two masterly tales, the collection includes "The Crystal Cup," "The Chain of Destiny," "The Castle of the King," "The Dualists" (probably Stoker's most horrifying story), "The Judge's House," "The Secret of the Growing Gold," "A Dream of Red Hands," "Crooken Sands," "Dracula's Guest," and three more. Lovers of occult and supernatural fiction will delight in this inexpensive collection of ghost and horror stories, called by Stephen King "absolutely champion short stories."

The Best Gift: A Record of the Carnegie Libraries in Ontario

by Margaret Beckman Stephen Langmead John Black

This book is a vivid reminder of the early days of library development in Ontario. The beautiful buildings which still grace Ontario towns and villages, as illustrated, are a part of our provincial heritage. By the turn of the century, a public library was perceived as an important element in the civic fabric of almost every Ontario community. However, the introduction of the Carnegie grants for library buildings gave impetus to the Ontario government programme for library development, and provided a focus for increased support of library services. Rivalry among neighbouring communities to secure a Carngie library heightened this awareness, as did the publicity – in some instances even controversy – which surrounded each step of the grant seeking, site selection and plan approval process. As well, the hitherto unexplored story of Carnegie grant process in each community has been examined, and the role of one man, James Bertram, secretary to Andrew Carnegie, is revealed in absorbing detail. Library plans and design elements are also discussed, and the influence of a few architects on the building designs is revealed; the fascinating involvement of Frank Lloyd Wright in the Pembroke Carnegie library building is one such example.
