Advanced Engineering Mathematics with Mathematica

by Edward B. Magrab

Advanced Engineering Mathematics with Mathematica® presents advanced analytical solution methods that are used to solve boundary-value problems in engineering and integrates these methods with Mathematica® procedures. It emphasizes the Sturm–Liouville system and the generation and application of orthogonal functions, which are used by the separation of variables method to solve partial differential equations. It introduces the relevant aspects of complex variables, matrices and determinants, Fourier series and transforms, solution techniques for ordinary differential equations, the Laplace transform, and procedures to make ordinary and partial differential equations used in engineering non-dimensional. To show the diverse applications of the material, numerous and widely varied solved boundary value problems are presented.

Advanced Engineering Mathematics with MATLAB (Advances in Applied Mathematics)

by Dean G. Duffy

In the four previous editions the author presented a text firmly grounded in the mathematics that engineers and scientists must understand and know how to use. Tapping into decades of teaching at the US Navy Academy and the US Military Academy and serving for twenty-five years at (NASA) Goddard Space Flight, he combines a teaching and practical experience that is rare among authors of advanced engineering mathematics books. This edition offers a smaller, easier to read, and useful version of this classic textbook. While competing textbooks continue to grow, the book presents a slimmer, more concise option. Instructors and students alike are rejecting the encyclopedic tome with its higher and higher price aimed at undergraduates. To assist in the choice of topics included in this new edition, the author reviewed the syllabi of various engineering mathematics courses that are taught at a wide variety of schools. Due to time constraints an instructor can select perhaps three to four topics from the book, the most likely being ordinary differential equations, Laplace transforms, Fourier series and separation of variables to solve the wave, heat, or Laplace's equation. Laplace transforms are occasionally replaced by linear algebra or vector calculus. Sturm-Liouville problem and special functions (Legendre and Bessel functions) are included for completeness. Topics such as z-transforms and complex variables are now offered in a companion book, Advanced Engineering Mathematics: A Second Course by the same author. MATLAB is still employed to reinforce the concepts that are taught. Of course, this Edition continues to offer a wealth of examples and applications from the scientific and engineering literature, a highlight of previous editions. Worked solutions are given in the back of the book.

Advanced ENT MCQs: Training to pass the FRCS (ORL-HNS) Part 1 (MasterPass)

by Peter Kullar Jameel Muzaffar Joseph Manjaly

Providing over 400 high quality MCQs in the style of the Part 1 FRCS (ORL-HNS) together with clear explanations of not only the correct answer but also a structured way of approaching questions, this revision guide enables exam candidates to prepare for the FRCS (ORL-HNS) Section 1 exam with confidence. The questions and answers reflect the new approach to the exam and its focus on higher order judgement and testing real world clinical decision making. Questions are presented as a common stem with five possible answers, one of which will be the most correct answer: a ‘single best answer’. The stem is carefully written, so that every word should help guide candidates to the correct answer. None of the answers will be obviously wrong or dangerous. The candidate must recognise that a ‘single best answer’ is not the same as a ‘single correct answer’. In many of the questions, all the presented answers could be considered correct, but the candidate must choose the best or most appropriate answer from those available.Written by an expert author team who have provided valuable insights and expert content to ensure the book’s authority. The content is suitable for exam candidates from the UK and for International ENT trainees preparing to sit the FRCS (ORL-HNS) exam. It is also applicable for candidates preparing for the DOHNS/MRCS ENT exam.

Advanced Environmental Wind Engineering

by Yukio Tamura Ryuichiro Yoshie

This book is highly suitable for advanced courses asit introduces state-of-the-art information and the latest research results ondiverse problems in the environmental wind engineering field. The topics includeindoor natural ventilation, pedestrian wind environment, pollutant dispersion, urban heat island phenomena, urban ventilation, indoor/outdoor thermal comfort, and experimental/numerical techniques to analyze those issues. Winds have a great influence on the outdoorenvironment, especially in urban areas. Problems that they cause can beattributed to either strong wind or weak wind issues. Strong winds aroundhigh-rise buildings can bring about unpleasant, and in some cases dangerous, situations for people in the outdoor environment. On the other hand, weak windconditions can also cause problems such as air pollution and heat islandphenomena in urban areas. Winds enhance urban ventilation and reduce thoseproblems. They also enhance natural ventilation in buildings, which can reducethe energy consumption of mechanical ventilation fans and air conditioners forcooling. Moderate winds improve human thermal comfort in both indoor andoutdoor environments in summer. Environmental wind engineering associated withwind tunnel experiments and numerical analysis can contribute to solutions tothese issues.

Advanced Ethics for Addiction Professionals

by Michael J. Taleff

Ethical decision-making is required in many of the difficult situations faced by addiction professionals. In this guide, Michael Taleff describes how to integrate critical thinking with ethical decision-making. This is a guide not on "what to do" when confronted with difficult ethical dilemmas, but on how to think about what to do.
The author presents common ethical dilemmas that addiction professionals face in their daily work--such as boundary issues, confidentiality, dual relationships, and more--and asks readers to consider their own responses to these dilemmas. The book then shows readers how to apply new models of ethical thinking to practice.
Key features:

Presents an ethical self-exam to encourage critical thinking about one's own decision-making method
Introduces a variety of models such as the social contract theory, existentialist theory, and ethical egoism
Discusses how biases, emotional reactions, and fallacies can weaken ethical decision-making
Presents an introductory "Ethics Judgment Kit," a simple, practical decision-making procedure for students

This book demonstrates how critical thinking skills can impact and improve the process of ethical decision-making.

Advanced Euclidean Geometry

by Roger A. Johnson

For many years, this elementary treatise on advanced Euclidean geometry has been the standard textbook in this area of classical mathematics; no other book has covered the subject quite as well. It explores the geometry of the triangle and the circle, concentrating on extensions of Euclidean theory, and examining in detail many relatively recent theorems. Several hundred theorems and corollaries are formulated and proved completely; numerous others remain unproved, to be used by students as exercises. The author makes liberal use of circular inversion, the theory of pole and polar, and many other modern and powerful geometrical tools throughout the book. In particular, the method of "directed angles" offers not only a powerful method of proof but also furnishes the shortest and most elegant form of statement for several common theorems. This accessible text requires no more extensive preparation than high school geometry and trigonometry.
