The $60,000 Dog: My Life with Animals
by Lauren SlaterA stunning new book about the role of animals in our lives, by a popular and acclaimed writer From the time she is nine years old, biking to the farmland outside her suburban home, where she discovers a disquieting world of sleeping cows and a "Private Way" full of the wondrous and creepy creatures of the wild--spiders, deer, moles, chipmunks, and foxes--Lauren Slater finds in animals a refuge from her troubled life. As she matures, her attraction to animals strengthens and grows more complex and compelling even as her family is falling to pieces around her. Slater spends a summer at horse camp, where she witnesses the alternating horrific and loving behavior of her instructor toward the animals in her charge and comes to question the bond that so often develops between females and their equines. Slater's questions follow her to a foster family, her own parents no longer able to care for her. A pet raccoon, rescued from a hole in the wall, teaches her how to feel at home away from home. The two Shiba Inu puppies Slater adopts years later, against her husband's will, grow increasingly important to her as she ages and her family begins to grow. Slater's husband is a born skeptic and possesses a sternly scientific view of animals as unconscious, primitive creatures, one who insists "that an animal's worth is roughly equivalent to its edibility." As one of her dogs, Lila, goes blind and the medical bills and monthly expenses begin to pour in, he calculates the financial burden of their canine family member and finds that Lila has cost them about $60,000, not to mention the approximately 400 pounds of feces she has deposited in their yard. But when Benjamin begins to suffer from chronic pain, Lauren is convinced it is Lila's resilience and the dog's quick adaptation to her blindness that draws her husband out of his own misery and motivates him to try to adjust to his situation. Ben never becomes a true believer or a die-hard animal lover, but his story and the stories Lauren tells of her own bond with animals convince her that our connections with the furry, the four-legged, the exoskeleton-ed, or the winged may be just as priceless as our human relationships. The $60,000 Dog is Lauren Slater's intimate manifesto on the unique, invaluable, and often essential contributions animals make to our lives. As a psychologist, a reporter, an amateur naturalist, and above all an enormously gifted writer, she draws us into the stories of her passion for animals that are so much more than pets. She describes her intense love for the animals in her life without apology and argues, finally, that the works of Darwin and other evolutionary biologists prove that, when it comes to worth, animals are equal, and in some senses even superior, to human beings. From the Hardcover edition.
60 Crocheted Snowflakes
by Barbara ChristopherFew objects evoke the spirit of Christmas and a holiday atmosphere more effectively than light and airy snowflakes. Now, with this unusually extensive and comprehensive collection of patterns, crocheters can add exquisitely shaped "snow gems" to their treasure chest of festive ornaments.Delicate snowflake patterns, infinite in form and amazingly symmetrical, are among the most popular designs with today's needleworkers. The 60 motifs in this collection, based on photographs of actual snowflakes from the book Snow Crystals by W. A. Bentley and W. L. J. Humphreys, include simple shapes for beginners, as well as intricate and challenging motifs for the more advanced. Eye-catching patterns include star-shaped wheels, exotic flower-like webs, six-side jewels of intricately worked threads, and a kaleidoscope of lacy arms and elaborate fern-like compositions.Ideal for decorating Christmas trees, windows, and packages, or for framing, the snowflake patterns included here come with complete directions and finely detailed illustrations; and unlike nature's fragile, short-lived crystals, these inexpensive ornaments will be a joy to behold for years to come.
60 Crocheted Snowflakes (Dover Needlework Series)
by Barbara ChristopherThis unusually comprehensive collection features patterns based on actual snowflake photographs. At the beginning of the book, the author gives easy-to-follow instructions for each stitch used in this book. The threads she suggests work up beautifully, though other brands will also make wonderful snowflakes. Some patterns are easy; some are intricate, but all rely on just a few basic stitches.

60-GHz CMOS Phase-Locked Loops
by Reza Mahmoudi Arthur H.M. Roermund Hammad M. CheemaThe promising high data rate wireless applications at millimeter wave frequencies in general and 60 GHz in particular have gained much attention in recent years. However, challenges related to circuit, layout and measurements during mm-wave CMOS IC design have to be overcome before they can become viable for mass market. 60-GHz CMOS Phase-Locked Loops focusing on phase-locked loops for 60 GHz wireless transceivers elaborates these challenges and proposes solutions for them. The system level design to circuit level implementation of the complete PLL, along with separate implementations of individual components such as voltage controlled oscillators, injection locked frequency dividers and their combinations, are included. Furthermore, to satisfy a number of transceiver topologies simultaneously, flexibility is introduced in the PLL architecture by using new dual-mode ILFDs and switchable VCOs, while reusing the low frequency components at the same time.

60 Hikes Within 60 Miles: San Francisco
by Jane HuberBay Area parks and preserves offer a dramatic variety of landscapes, from rugged redwood-forested canyons to breezy coastal bluffs, grassy rolling hills to sunny chaparral-coated hillsides. Well-known destinations such as Point Reyes National Seashore, Mount Diablo State Park, Mount Tamalpais State Park, and many other more obscure jewels of the Bay Area park system are just a short drive from the heart of San Francisco. Completely updated and including several new hikes and a complete new map set, 60 Hikes within 60 Miles: San Francisco guides readers to a splendid assortment of trails in the nine counties surrounding one of the world's most beautiful cities. Whether hikers crave a quick and easy get-out-of-town stroll or a challenging day-long trek through wilderness, this book is the perfect trailblazer, for city natives and first-time visitors alikeConsider yourself warned: Hiking in the Bay Area can be an intense and addictive experience. Sure, other areas of California are home to more esteemed landforms and parks-Yosemite is one of many world-class parks within a day's drive, and backpackers traverse the state as they trek one of the country's longest routes, the Pacific Crest Trail. Throughout the Bay Area there are many "destination" parks, where people from all over the world flock to walk among giant redwoods or whale-watch from a wildflower-dotted coastal bluff. But there are hundreds of smaller parks unknown to most tourists and even lifelong residents, and short drives (or in some cases bus trips, walks, or bike rides) lead to numerous parks and preserves with stunning views, bountiful wildlife, and quiet trails. These "backyard" preserves are especially beneficial to the residents of the Bay Area's most densely packed cities, San Jose, San Francisco, and Oakland. Local parks provide close-to-home outlets for exercise and nature exploration on a daily basis-thousands of people living in the foothills of Mount Tamalpais can literally walk from their front doors for miles, all the way to the top of the mountain if they like. Locals hike parks and open-space preserves bordering the towns of Berkeley, Mill Valley, and Woodside daily, and they take active roles in maintaining the trails. Getting to know your backyard means getting to love your backyard-and we fight for what we love. This dedication to open space has led many ordinary citizens in rallies to save some of our most cherished Bay Area spots. The campaign to preserve open space began in the era of John Muir, and the list of protected parklands is long and impressive. Battles continue, and development still threatens many special areas. As you make your way over trails throughout the Bay Area, think of what we could have lost and have already preserved: old growth redwoods in Muir Woods saved from logging, Point Reyes National Seashore and the Marin Headlands saved from huge housing complexes, various small parks including Edgewood saved from development as golf courses, as well as many other "common" plots of land preserved to make life a little better for the surrounding community.
