Kulkarniभारताच्या स्वातंत्र्यलढ्यातील एक थोर क्रांतिकारक बाबा पृथ्वीसिंह आझाद यांचे वयाच्या ९७ व्या वर्षी १९८९ च्या मार्चमध्ये निधन झाले. अंबाला शहराजवळच्या एका खेड्यात त्यांचा १५ सप्टेंबर, १८९२ रोजी जन्म झाला होता. ते मूळचे रजपूत असून त्यांचे चौधरी घराणे पंजाबात स्थायिक झाले. लहानपणीच त्यांची आई मरण पावली आणि हलाखीच्या परिस्थितीमुळे पृथ्वीसिंहांचे वडील शादीराम यांना रोजगार शोधीत ब्रह्मदेशात जावे लागले. पृथ्वीसिंहांचे चुलते दोन पुतण्यांना घेऊन पंजाबातून ब्रह्मदेशात गेले. रशियातील १९०५ ची अयशस्वी क्रांती, बंगालच्या फाळणीविरुद्ध चाललेले आंदोलन, लाला लजपतरायांची हद्दपारी, लोकमान्य टिळकांना झालेली सहा वर्षांची शिक्षा वगैरे घटनांमुळे पृथ्वीसिंहांनी भारत स्वतंत्र करण्याचा ध्यास घेतला. ते १९१३ च्या अखेरीस अमेरिकेत गेल्यानंतर “गदर” या नावाने ओळखल्या जाणाऱ्या क्रांतिकारकांच्या गुप्त संघटनेत सामील झाले. हिंदुस्थानात परतल्यानंतर एकाच वेळी कलकत्त्यापासून पेशावरपर्यन्त सशस्त्र उठाव करण्याची योजना आखण्यात आली पण ती अयशस्वी ठरली.
