Kunstpädagogik im Fokus von Digitalisierung, Künstlerkooperation und Lernortwechsel: Eine empirische Studie zur Professionalisierung kunstgemäßen Handelns Jugendlicher in intermedialen Lernsettings

by Stefan Spengler

Beer and Circus: How Big-Time College Sports Is Crippling Undergraduate Education

by Murray Sperber

Beer and Circus presents a no-holds-barred examination of the troubled relationship between college sports and higher education from a leading authority on the subject.Murray Sperber turns common perceptions about big-time college athletics inside out. He shows, for instance, that contrary to popular belief the money coming in to universities from sports programs never makes it to academic departments and rarely even covers the expense of maintaining athletic programs. The bigger and more prominent the sports program, the more money it siphons away from academics.Sperber chronicles the growth of the university system, the development of undergraduate subcultures, and the rising importance of sports. He reveals television's ever more blatant corporate sponsorship conflicts and describes a peculiar phenomenon he calls the "Flutie Factor"--the surge in enrollments that always follows a school's appearance on national television, a response that has little to do with academic concerns. Sperber's profound re-evaluation of college sports comes straight out of today's headlines and opens our eyes to a generation of students caught in a web of greed and corruption, deprived of the education they deserve.Sperber presents a devastating critique, not only of higher education but of national culture and values. Beer and Circus is a must-read for all students and parents, educators and policy makers.

The Other Presidency: Thomas Jefferson and the American Philosophical Society

by Patrick Spero

In The Other Presidency, Patrick Spero resurrects an overlooked but essential part of Thomas Jefferson’s life. For nearly seventeen years, Jefferson served as President of the American Philosophical Society (APS), the nation’s first learned society and one dedicated to promoting new research in the young republic, especially in the sciences. He did so while also serving as Vice President and President of the United States. As Spero shows in this short but important work, Jefferson used his various positions to solidify the Society’s foundation and, in turn, shape the course of American science. Through a deep dive into APS Archives and Jefferson’s papers, Spero demonstrates how the Society became a thoroughly Jeffersonian institution—that is, the APS, the largest and most powerful scientific body in the nation, advanced an agenda that comported with Jefferson’s own priorities. While Jefferson juggled affairs of state, he also remained deeply involved in the Society. In fact, the two complemented each other. He helped draft the institution’s first collection development policy, making clear the items and material he thought most important for the nation’s posterity. He also used his international network to introduce European intellectuals to the Society, and he called on these same networks to help build the Society’s collection. Jefferson himself received direct support from the Society to conduct his own research, including funding for an expedition with James Madison, and as President of the United States, he would often call on the APS and its members for advice. In short, Spero shows that Jefferson was integral to the development of the APS—and, perhaps more unexpectedly, the APS and the scientific community it fostered were integral to Jefferson and his vision for the young United States.A resource for students, history buffs, and Jefferson aficionados, the book includes a chronology of Thomas Jefferson's contributions to the APS, with references to major events in Jefferson's life.

Cuckoo Land: The Cuckooing Risk Environment (Drugs, Crime and Society)

by Jack Spicer

Drawing on rich qualitative data, this book presents a novel way of understanding the drug market-related harm of ‘cuckooing’, providing a theoretically informed account of this increasingly high-profile area.Applying the framework of the ‘risk environment’, the book examines why people become cuckooed, how it is responded to and how this exploitative practice is socially produced. In doing so, a diverse range of environments and features relevant to cuckooing are analysed, including the role of housing, political economy, drug policy, policing and social exclusion. By interrogating how these constrain and enable the actions of people who are affected, the book develops a critical analysis that recognises the complexity of cuckooing while eschewing superficial explanations of why it occurs. Resisting simplistic solutions, it also considers what an enabling environment capable of reducing the harms of this exploitative practice might look like.Cuckoo Land will be of interest to academic researchers in the fields of criminology, victimology, social work and drugs. It will also be essential reading for policymakers and practitioners working on the issue of cuckooing.

Voting Online: Technology and Democracy in Municipal Elections (McGill-Queen's Studies in Urban Governance)

by Zachary Spicer Scott Pruysers Nicole Goodman R. Michael McGregor Helen A. Hayes

In an attempt to reverse declining rates of voter participation, governments around the world are turning to electronic voting to improve the efficiency of vote counts, and increase the accessibility and equity of the voting process for electors who may face additional barriers. The Covid-19 pandemic has intensified this trend.Voting Online focuses on Canada, where the technology has been widely embraced by municipal governments with one of the highest rates of use in the world. In the age of cyber elections, Canada is the only country where governments offer fully remote electronic elections and where traditional paper voting is eliminated for entire electorates. Municipalities are the laboratories of electoral modernization when it comes to digital voting reform. We know conspicuously little about the effects of these changes, particularly the elimination of paper ballots.Relying on surveys of voters, non-voters, and candidates in twenty Ontario cities, and a survey of administrators across the province of Ontario, Voting Online provides a holistic view of electronic elections unavailable anywhere else.

Visualizing Quantum Mechanics with Python

by Steve Spicklemire

Quantum Mechanics can be an abstract and complex subject. Students often complain of confusion, struggle, and frustration as they try to master the topic. The goal of this book is to reduce the complexity and clarify the abstractions with concrete visual examples driven by simple python programs. It is assumed that the reader is concurrently taking a course in quantum mechanics, or self-studying quantum mechanics, but is looking for supplementary material to help with understanding and visualizing how quantum mechanics works. The focus of this book is writing python programs to visualize the underlying behavior of the mathematical theory. The background needed to understand quantum mechanics is differential equations, linear algebra and modern physics. We need a strong foundation in differential equations and linear algebra because the behavior of quantum systems is governed by equations that are written in terms of these concepts. Modern physics includes concepts such as special relativity and quantum phenomena like the photoelectric effect and energy quantization that the theory of quantum mechanics seeks to explain. This book is also not an introduction to the python programming language, or to numpy, or even to VPython. However its programming examples start simply and grow more complex as the chapters progress, so deep expertise in any of these is not a pre-requisite.Key features:· Provides an accessible and practical guide to the abstractions in quantum mechanics with concrete visual examples driven by simple python programs.· Contains few derivations, equations, and proofs.· For complete beginners of python programming, appendix B serves as a very brief introduction to the main concepts needed to understand the code in this book.Dr. Stephen Spicklemire is Associate Professor of Physics at the University of Indianapolis, USA. He has been teaching physics at the University of Indianapolis for more than 30 years. From the implementation of "flipped" physics class to the modernization of scientific computing and laboratory instrumentation courses, he has brought the strengths of his background in physics, engineering and computer science into the classroom. Dr. Spicklemire also does IT and engineering consulting. He is an active participant in several national research initiatives relating to improving physics education. These range from improving materials to help students prepare for class, to supporting students success through standards based grading. He is an active developer of the VPython and WebVPython projects and a contributor to the Matter and Interactions textbook.

The Financial Metaverse: Tokens, Derivatives and Other Synthetic Assets

by Albin Spinner

Derivative trading? That's something for Wall Street types, right? Maybe, but it also affects everyone else in ways that are still little appreciated. Futures traders have paralysed the global trade of nickel, a key component in the battery of your neighbour’s Tesla. For a few minutes one trading day during the pandemic, sellers of crude oil were paying buyers to take the stuff, defying the very notion of trading, in an episode straight out of “Alice in Wonderland”.Understanding how this obscure corner of finance works (and what happens when it doesn't) is a key pillar of financial literacy today. If you are a financial markets practitioner, everyday investor, academic, regulator, policy maker or kitchen-table economist, you need to know how financial derivatives really work and be aware of the emerging digital innovations that makes this market the highest stake metaverse.

Music as Philosophy: Adorno and Beethoven's Late Style (Musical Meaning and Interpretation)

by Michael Spitzer

Beethoven's late style is the language of his ninth symphony, the Missa Solemnis, the last piano sonatas and string quartets, the Diabelli Variations, the Bagatelles, as well as five piano sonatas, five string quartets, and several smaller piano works. Historically, these works are seen as forging a bridge between the Classical and Romantic traditions: in terms of their musical structure, they continue to be regarded as revolutionary.Spitzer's book examines these late works in light of the musical and philosophical writings of the German intellectual Theodor Adorno, and in so doing, attempts to reconcile the conflicting approaches of musical semiotics and critical theory. He draws from various approaches to musical, linguistic, and aesthetic meaning, relating Adorno to such writers as Derrida, Benjamin, and Habermas, as well as contemporary music theorists. Through analyses of Beethoven's use of specific musical techniques (including neo-Baroque fugues and counterpoint), Spitzer suggests that the composer's last works offer a philosophical and musical critique of the Enlightenment, and in doing so created the musical language of premodernism.
