Secondary Metabolites in Plant Stress Adaptation: Analytic Space of Secondary Metabolites (Signaling and Communication in Plants)

by Nabil Semmar

This book covers correlation and combined disciplinary aspects implying the use of secondary metabolites (SMs) of different plant species for control and monitoring of environment states. Phytochemical management of ecological systems represents an integrative field aiming for determination/evaluation of environment conditions from qualitative and quantitative analysis of plant metabolites. Plants respond to environmental conditions through productions of secondary metabolites. SMs represent highly variable and sensitive phytocompounds because of their small produced amounts, high structural variability and diversified activities. These characteristics make variations of SMs in plants to be highly informative on environmental conditions, physiological states and biological interactions. Qualitative and quantitative variations of SMs in plants are subject to correlation analyses to highlight links between biotic/abiotic conditions and plant chemical patterns.

Obesity and Lung Disease: A Guide to Pathophysiology, Evaluation, and Management (Respiratory Medicine)

by Anne E. Dixon Erick Forno

This new edition provides a fully updated guide to obesity’s relation to lung disease. Over forty percent of the U.S. population is obese, and obesity is increasing in much of the world. Obesity has a major impact on health conditions such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease. The effects of obesity on lung disease have drawn increasing attention in recent years. Furthermore, the COVID pandemic has dramatically illustrated how obesity affects respiratory disease, constitutes a major risk factor for COVID-19, and presents challenges to pulmonary care in the ICU. Obesity changes physiology, immune and metabolic function, and is associated with changes in diet and the microbiome, all of which combine to have a major impact on the pathogenesis of respiratory diseases. Obesity is thus a risk factor for many respiratory diseases such as asthma, pulmonary hypertension, thromboembolic disease, obstructive sleep apnea and ARDS. Obesity also complicates the management of manyother respiratory diseases and conditions such as COPD, thromboembolic disease, and the care of the critically ill patient. The objectives of this book are three-fold: To review how physiological, immune and metabolic factors might contribute to lung disease. To discuss the impact of obesity on common lung diseasesTo outline important considerations in the management of critically ill obese patients. There have been major advances in our understanding of the relationship between obesity and lung disease since the first edition in 2013, in addition to the major lessons learned about the importance of obesity during the COVID-19 pandemic. This has led to the addition of eight new chapters on topics such as, the microbiome, lung transplant, and COVID-19 in the ICU. This is an ideal guide for all clinicians taking care of patients with pulmonary and critical care diseases, as well as basic and translational scientists interested in how obesity affects respiratory health.

Lamarckism and the Emergence of 'Scientific' Social Sciences in Nineteenth-Century Britain and France (History, Philosophy and Theory of the Life Sciences #36)

by Snait B. Gissis

The book presents an original synthesizing framework on the relations between ‘the biological’ and ‘the social’. Within these relations, the late nineteenth-century emergence of social sciences aspiring to be constituted as autonomous, as 'scientific' disciplines, is described, analyzed and explained. Through this framework, the author points to conceptual and constructive commonalities conjoining significant founding figures – Lamarck, Spencer, Hughlings Jackson, Ribot, Durkheim, Freud – who were not grouped nor analyzed in this manner before. Thus, the book offers a rather unique synthesis of the interactions of the social, the mental, and the evolutionary biological – Spencerian Lamarckism and/or Neo-Lamarckism – crystallizing into novel fields. It adds substantially to the understanding of the complexities of evolutionary debates during the last quarter of the nineteenth century. It will attract the attention of a wide spectrum of specialists, academics, and postgraduates in European history of the nineteenth century, history and philosophy of science, and history of biology and of the social sciences, including psychology.

Tip Streaming of Simple and Complex Fluids (Fluid Mechanics and Its Applications #137)

by José María Montanero

This book comprehensively describes the tip streaming in simple fluids and those containing surfactants and polymeric molecules. It summarizes the theoretical models and approximations commonly adopted to analyze this phenomenon. It provides relevant experimental results and presents the scaling laws for rationalizing those results. The stability of the flows leading to tip streaming is analyzed theoretically and experimentally. Attention is paid to the effects of surfactant monolayers and viscoelasticity, including solutocapillarity, interfacial elasticity, surface viscosity, and extensional thickening caused by the polymer coil-stretch transition. It also offers an overall perspective of the numerous technological applications of the tip-streaming phenomenon. Remarkable examples are the production of microemulsions and microencapsulation of active agents for the food and pharmacy industries, the atomization of charged liquids for analytical chemistry, and the ejection of ultra-fast and ultra-thin jets for crystallography. Physical mechanisms responsible for the onset of tip streaming driven by hydrodynamic and electrohydrodynamic forces are described. Relevant theoretical and experimental results of the periodic microdripping and continuous microjetting modes of tip streaming produced with microfluidic configurations such as electrospray, flow focusing, coflowing, and selective withdrawal are discussed. The physical mechanisms responsible for the instability of the microjetting mode are studied in detail. The book collects the scaling laws used to predict the outcome of the microfluidic configurations mentioned above. The author combines state-of-the-art experimental results and linear stability analysis to identify the instability mechanisms limiting the applicability of the above-mentioned microfluidic configurations. In this way, the book connects experimental observations with fundamental aspects of tip streaming, bridging the microfluidic and fluid dynamicist communities. The connection between results obtained from the theoretical and experimental approaches will help experimentalists to understand the fundamental aspects of their practical problems. A useful guide for researchers working on hydrodynamic focusing and electrospray.

Urban Vice Regulation Compared: How the Progressive Era’s Undercover Tactics Underwrote American Challenges to French Regulation (SpringerBriefs in Law)

by Jacqueline E. Ross

This book uses the early twentieth century surveillance reports of urban vice reformers in New York, Chicago, Lancaster, Pennsylvania, as well as the US vice report for the League of Nations’ Special Body on Trafficking in Women and Children (from 1927) and French police memoirs, treatises, and histories of vice enforcement in late nineteenth century and early twentieth century Paris to highlight the way in which American reliance on undercover tactics drove American vice enforcement policy, leading to a clash with French vice enforcement policy before the League of Nations. Both the failure of that early effort to exert international influence on vice enforcement and the American embrace of undercover tactics would set the stage for the later American efforts to promote a global war on drugs. Before the League of Nations, in particular, the American delegation’s notable lack of success in mobilizing European crackdowns on prostitution created a blueprint for how not to project American influence overseas, once American advocates of narcotics interdiction sought to promote a global war on drugs. Yet private reformers’ reliance on undercover tactics to investigate prostitution modeled the investigative tactics on which American law enforcement would come to depend, and which it would later seek to export, as a primary weapon in the war on drugs.

Legal Culture, Sociopolitical Origins and Professional Careers of Judges in Mexico

by Azul A. Aguiar Aguilar

This book explores the careers, professional trajectories and legal cultures of judges in the federal judiciary in Mexico. So far, there has been limited research on internal factors contributing to the understanding of judicial power dynamics in Mexico and other Latin American countries at large; this Work fills an important gap in the literature through its empirical investigation of internal legal cultures and judicial norms, offering new data, measurement strategies, and insights into the interactions between law, politics, norms, legal culture(s), as well as judicial behavior. Utilising an original survey, the chapters analyse judicial conceptualizations of role norms, legal cultures, proclivities for judicial activism, and judicial behavior. In so doing, this book contributes to understanding of underlying key internal factors of judicial activism or restraint, in turn moving forward the debate that seeks to explain judicial behavior reliant on internal and ideational perspectives. Complementing limited but existing studies of judicial politics in Mexico through its analysis of judges beyond those that sit at the Supreme Court, this book will be of particular interest to Latin-American judicial politics scholars due to its focus on the judicial power from internal perspectives as well as sub-national judges, filling a void in the literature vis-à-vis the study of courts in Latin America. This Work was originally written in Spanish, and the translation was done with the help of artificial intelligence. A subsequent human revision was done primarily in terms of content.

Authoritarian Temptations and Right-Wing Threat Alliance: The Crisis of Capitalistic Societies in an Uncertain Future

by Wilhelm Heitmeyer

This book, by noted German sociologist Wilhelm Heitmeyer, analyses capitalist development in Western Europe, with a focus on Germany, since the 1990s and its consequences for open society and liberal democracy. Following Heitmeyer’s long-term interest in extremism, this book highlights two main threads of discussion: the causes and distribution of authoritarian tendencies, and the processes and steps of escalation of these tendencies through right-wing alliances. It critically views capitalism and capitalist governance in times of crises against problems of political representation and the devaluation of certain groups. It looks at a broad spectrum of attitudes in the population on the bases of a representative longitudinal study called ‘group-focused enmity’. Using the model of a ‘concentric escalation continuum’, this book also analyses the steps of differentiation and dynamization of the right-wing spectrum in the process of development of successful right-wing alliances. Heitmeyer meticulously studies how violent processes escalate and increases as a danger for the open society and liberal democracy, especially in times of crisis and unsecured future. The book has important gleanings for anyone seeking to understand and address extremism and political alienation in societies today.

Multimodal and Tensor Data Analytics for Industrial Systems Improvement (Springer Optimization and Its Applications #211)

by Panos M. Pardalos Nathan Gaw Mostafa Reisi Gahrooei

This volume covers the latest methodologies for using multimodal data fusion and analytics across several applications. The curated content presents recent developments and challenges in multimodal data analytics and shines a light on a pathway toward new research developments. Chapters are composed by eminent researchers and practitioners who present their research results and ideas based on their expertise. As data collection instruments have improved in quality and quantity for many applications, there has been an unprecedented increase in the availability of data from multiple sources, known as modalities. Modalities express a large degree of heterogeneity in their form, scale, resolution, and accuracy. Determining how to optimally combine the data for prediction and characterization is becoming increasingly important. Several research studies have investigated integrating multimodality data and discussed the challenges and limitations of multimodal data fusion. This volume provides a topical overview of various methods in multimodal data fusion for industrial engineering and operations research applications, such as manufacturing and healthcare.Advancements in sensing technologies and the shift toward the Internet of Things (IoT) has transformed and will continue to transform data analytics by producing new requirements and more complex forms of data. The abundance of data creates an unprecedented opportunity to design more efficient systems and make near-optimal operational decisions. On the other hand, the structural complexity and heterogeneity of the generated data pose a significant challenge to extracting useful features and patterns for making use of the data and facilitating decision-making. Therefore, continual research is needed to develop new statistical and analytical methodologies that overcome these data challenges and turn them into opportunities.

Chapple's Principles of Wound Care and Healing: The Physiological Challenge

by Michael F. Klaassen Peter Charlesworth

This book is a tribute to Dr Joan Chapple CNZM FRACS, who qualified as New Zealand's first formally trained female plastic surgeon in the late 1950s and practised as a plastic and hand surgeon in Auckland, New Zealand for over 38 years. She was selected for surgical training by the late Sir William Manchester, who started the Middlemore Plastic Surgery Unit in December 1950. Joan was an original thinker and a pioneer in the fields of wound care and healing in her own right. She self-published “The Management of Soft Tissue Injuries: Philosophy, Principles and Practice” in 1994, followed by her definitive “Wound Care and Healing: The Physiological Challenge” in 2003. Dr Chapple developed principles of a practical physiological approach to acute wounds that not only benefited their recovery and healing, but also demonstrably reduced the post-operative pain in her patients. She practised and taught these principles at her Soft Tissue Trauma Clinics, based at the Emergency Department of the then Auckland Public Hospital. She also lectured widely to nurses, medical students, general practitioners and surgeons. Joan Chapple’s primary hypotheses were: 1. Injury initiates a series of coordinated living responses. 2. Living cells need to be nurtured in a moist and non-toxic environment. 3. The speed and quality of recovery and repair after injury depends on the circulation. 4. The body recovers and heals with or without treatment, but never without circulation. This republication of “Chapple's Wound Care and Healing” comes with a modern orientation and includes expert commentaries, many of which confirm that Dr Chapple’s thinking, knowledge and surgical principles were ahead of their time. In addition, it contains a new chapter explaining her extraordinary life and career for a world readership. Joan Chapple remains an important virtual mentor to future generations of surgeons, nurses, emergency specialists and general practitioners.

10 Nursing Interventions for Family Caregivers: Guide to Best Practices in Adult-Gerontology Patient Care

by Mitzi M. Saunders

This book shines a light on the family caregiver, who cares for their loved one when nurses are not involved. It guides nurses to identify and partner with family caregivers and infuses confidence and desire to support them. The unique feature of this book is to provide nurses with the ability to see themselves in the role of supporting the family caregiver in their own practices with older people. Written in story form with teachable moments interjected within, it develops on the struggles and needs of the family caregiver. This book draws the nurse closer to the family caregiver using empathy, compassion, and competency; it elaborates on best practices to support key interventions that every professional nurse can do. Narrowing to 10 key nursing interventions helps establish the scope of family caregiver nursing care. Much of family caregiver care stems from compassion and “being with” and supporting the patient through difficult times. This is both an art and a skill. This much needed book guides nurses towards the family caregiver, the silent patient.
