Social Exclusion and the Criminal Justice System: A Comparative Analysis (ISSN)

by Elisa García-España Anabel Cerezo

This book presents the results of the latest in a long-running research project using the RIMES instrument, developed by scholars in Spain. Here, RIMES is used to measure the extent of social exclusion resulting from the penal system in comparative perspective. The volume shows the results of the application of the instrument in seven criminal justice systems: Germany, Italy, Spain, Poland, England and Wales, California, and New York.Divided into two parts, the first provides a general overview of the RIMES instrument, including a discussion of the theoretical model and the methodology. The second part focuses on the results of the application of RIMES in the seven jurisdictions. The comparative results are organised according to the nine dimensions included in the RIMES instrument: control of public spaces; legal safeguards; sentencing and sanctions systems; harshest penalties; prison rules; preventive intervention; legal and social status of offenders and ex-offenders; police and criminal records; and youth criminal justice. The last chapter summarizes the comparative results and ranks them in terms of the findings on social exclusion. The book will be of interest to academics, researchers and policy-makers working in the areas of Comparative Criminal Justice, Criminology, Criminal Law and Policy.

Frank O. Etheridge: Musician of the African Diaspora

by Ben Vinson III

This is a book by and about Frank O. Etheridge, an African-American musician from an age of cultural explosion. The decade after World War II saw the coming-of-age of marginalized cultures, and in North America a new voice emerged among peoples of African descent. Etheridge performed in a period when some of the greatest cultural producers of the African-American heritage assumed center-stage. From Shanghai to Singapore; from India to Africa and beyond, Frank Etheridge left us a detailed record of his travels in his unpublished manuscript. The book contains his views, insights, and international itinerary during the 1920s. His book is an important volume in the annals of African-American history, not just for its content, but for what it means and symbolizes. Its readers will journey with him, see through his eyes, understand race and racial prejudice as lived in ordinary skin, and sample culture. Some of Etheridge’s reflections and personal biases will seem like unpleasant contradictions from the way we think about racial prejudice today. However, these jarring moments of dissonance are rich learning opportunities that will connect us to his times, while unraveling a greater understanding of ourselves in our current moment. This manuscript, published for the first time, will be accompanied by editorial commentary written by Professor Ben Vinson III, and will be of great interest to students and scholars of African American history.

The Challenges of Working with Child Sexual Exploitation and How a Psychoanalytic Understanding Can Help

by Robin Solomon Marion Bower

Sexual exploitation is becoming endemic in our society. It involves victims being coerced to enter abusive sexual relationships with individuals or gangs. It can occur with children from care homes – or from more privileged backgrounds. Sexual exploitation is so addictive that it is really difficult to extract the victims. This is the first book that we are aware of that examines exploitation using a psychoanalytic framework which makes the behaviour and motives of victims and, in some cases, exploiters comprehensible. The book looks at a range of situations from care homes to refugee camps and elite schools. We expect this book to become indispensable for social workers, psychotherapists, counsellors, and care workers who have to tackle child sexual exploitation. Giving up an addiction is a struggle. Our clinical examples show how much and what kinds of work are needed to start to release girls from their addiction to their exploiters. The roots of vulnerability lie in an attack on the maternal function. This is reflected in the huge expansion of day-care taking children from as little as three months old. Care for mothers and children can be transformed. We demonstrate how powerful properly organised maternal-type care can be, to give young people a sound start to their lives.

Retraining for the Elderly Disabled (Routledge Revivals)

by Margaret Mort

Many elderly patients have long-term physical disability and in order for them to maintain a certain level of independence either in hospital or in the community, great attention must be paid to devising programmes to overcome problems and enhance residual abilities.Originally published in 1985, the programme described in this book had developed over the previous 25 years at the Royal Newcastle Hospital in Australia. It grew in response to the practical needs of patients who, having been treated by conventional means, were left with residual disabilities to a degree that their successful return to the community was jeopardised. The retraining programme described is a problem-solving process, coordinated under one director, combined with close teamwork between staff, the patient and relatives. Throughout, attention is paid to social and psychological factors as well as physical problems, when discussing physical retraining methods involving the repetition of routine movements.

Skill in Sport: The Attainment of Proficiency (Routledge Revivals)

by B. Knapp

Originally published in 1963, Skill in Sport was addressed to students and teachers of Physical Education, to coaches interested in the more theoretical aspects of their work, and to all individuals who wished to find out the best ways to acquire skill in any particular game or sport. Psychologists too may have found many of the examples and much of the discussion of interest to them.Practical issues are dealt with first and then the underlying theories are considered. Individual differences, teaching methods, motivation, specialization, differences between games and activities such as swimming and shot-putting, are among the problems which are discussed against a background of experimental evidence and personal experience. Many references are cited and many practical examples are given. The book sets out to stimulate discussion, more precise observation and research and it provides a sound basis on which to build a more complete understanding of skill and its attainment.Today it can be read and enjoyed in its historical context.

Fires and Human Behaviour: Second Edition (Psychology Revivals)

by David Canter

This second edition of Fires and Human Behaviour was originally published in 1990 and since the first edition in 1980 there continued to be considerable loss of life in small and large fires throughout the world. The most significant of these from a behavioural point of view was the Kings Cross underground station in 1988. This was a relatively small fire caused by inappropriate human actions. What appeared to remain timeless and of value ten years after the first edition was published were the details of what actually happens in fires and the psychological models that emerged from studying those details. This second edition was therefore edited to keep the original detailed case studies and to add information about some major incidents that had occurred since 1980.

Toward a Holistic Developmental Psychology (Psychology Revivals)

by Bernard Kaplan Seymour Wapner

Originally published in 1983, the main aim of this volume was to suggest new ways of conceptualizing human development and new domains of theorizing and engaging in practice for those who were vitally concerned with the nature and value of human beings. Toward this goal, colleagues and students of the later Heinz Werner, believing that Werner provided the schema for such a vision, here present modifications, extensions, and elaborations of his insights concerning the nature of development. The Wernerian approach, in origin and aim, is concerned with the development of the whole human being. The papers here were intended only as a stimulus to provoke others as well as the contributors themselves to a new, yet old approach, to human experience, thought, and action. Today it can be read and enjoyed in its historical context.

Football in its Place: An Environmental Psychology of Football Grounds (Psychology Revivals)

by David Canter David L. Uzzell Miriam Comber

In the late 1980s football was in a state of crisis. Falling attendances and a genuine unease among potential spectators about going to live football matches suggested that, without radical changes, the game would soon become a minority spectator sport. Originally published in 1989, reissued now with a new preface, Football in its Place presented a new approach to the problem that concentrates on the spectators’ experience of football and on the places where it is played. This approach recognizes four themes, which relate directly to the spectators’ experience: spectator comfort; the need for effective crowd control; the problems of coping in emergencies; and variations in club cultures. A special chapter on football-related violence shows how this needs to be understood in relation to all of these themes and not treated as a problem in isolation. This was said to be the only way to reverse the spiral that had given rise to hooliganism. Finally, the authors discuss the options for the future on football. They emphasize that football is a recreational activity whose management should be treated as part of the leisure industry. All aspects of the game, its traditions, club variations and heritage, needed to be harnessed if football was again to be Britain’s most popular spectator sport. Today we can see the impact that the points made in this book have contributed to how we continue to watch and enjoy football now.

Cognition and the Symbolic Processes (Psychology Revivals)

by David S. Palermo Walter B. Weimer

Originally published in 1974 and taking the revolution in psycholinguistics and cognitive psychology as a point of departure, this book summarizes the lessons learned from past attempts to construct a psychology of the higher mental processes. Even more importantly, it crystallizes specific directives and research proposals that show where cognitive psychology ought to go in the future. The relationship of learning theory, linguistics, and perception to the broad field of cognition and the nature of mind and knowledge are examined in detail. Today it can be read in its historical context.

Cognition and the Symbolic Processes: Volume 2 (Psychology Revivals)

by David S. Palermo Walter B. Weimer

Originally published in 1982, this book (following the previous volume published in 1974) continued to look at current issues in theoretical and cognitive psychology and looked for new directions for fruitful theory and research. The major concern for all the contributors was with the construction of a psychology of the higher mental processes through the evaluation of and improvement upon past efforts, as well as the exploration of related areas or disciplines for relevant new ideas. The contributors to this volume shared in common the rejection of not only behavioristic and associationistic approaches but also the sensory information-processing model that earlier dominated and (by weight of numbers of adherents and publications) still dominated cognitive psychology at the time. Today it can be read and enjoyed in its historical context.

Migration Landing Spaces: Processes and Infrastructures in Italy (Routledge Studies in Development, Mobilities and Migration)

by Martina Bovo

This book looks at migrant landing spaces, exploring the processes and infrastructures which people encounter as they navigate urban spaces along the central Mediterranean route. The book argues that there remains a theoretical and practical difficulty in grasping the complexity of migrant arrivals. Migrants are often unsure whether they will stay or leave, their mobility is uncertain. Despite this, they face rigid binaries and categories within administrative policy and planning which tries to pin them down as either permanent or temporary. Drawing on extensive original research in southern Italy, this book suggests that we should instead think of ‘landing spaces’: parts of the city that work as infrastructures for landing, that allow for an open and dynamic use of the urban space and provide opportunities for encounter and information exchange as migrants consider their next steps.Combining an ethnographic gaze with insights from urban planning, architecture, geography, social sciences and migration studies, this book invites us to look closer at the interactions between people, practices and places as migrants land in Europe.
