Rejection: Fiction

by Tony Tulathimutte

LONGLISTED FOR THE 2024 NATIONAL BOOK AWARD IN FICTION"A master comedian with a virtuoso prose style has produced an audacious, original and highly disturbing book . . . an incandescent satire." —Giles Harvey, The New York Times Magazine From the Whiting and O. Henry–winning author of Private Citizens (“the first great millennial novel,” New York Magazine), an electrifying novel-in-stories that follows a cast of intricately linked characters as rejection throws their lives and relationships into chaos.Sharply observant and outrageously funny, Rejection is a provocative plunge into the touchiest problems of modern life. The seven connected stories seamlessly transition between the personal crises of a complex ensemble and the comic tragedies of sex, relationships, identity, and the internet. In “The Feminist,” a young man’s passionate allyship turns to furious nihilism as he realizes, over thirty lonely years, that it isn’t getting him laid. A young woman’s unrequited crush in “Pics” spirals into borderline obsession and the systematic destruction of her sense of self. And in “Ahegao; or, The Ballad of Sexual Repression,” a shy late bloomer’s flailing efforts at a first relationship leads to a life-upending mistake. As the characters pop up in each other’s dating apps and social media feeds, or meet in dimly lit bars and bedrooms, they reveal the ways our delusions can warp our desire for connection. These brilliant satires explore the underrated sorrows of rejection with the authority of a modern classic and the manic intensity of a manifesto. Audacious and unforgettable, Rejection is a stunning mosaic that redefines what it means to be rejected by lovers, friends, society, and oneself."Rejection is unrelentingly brutal and gut-bustingly funny and spares no one—not you, not me. Tulathimutte is a pervert and a madman and a stone-cold genius." —Carmen Maria Machado, author of Her Body and Other Parties

Media at War: The Iraq Crisis

by Howard Tumber Jerry Palmer

′Tumber and Palmer have provided an invaluable review of how journalists covered and reported the Iraq war and its aftermath. Their exhaustive research has resulted in an impressive analysis that makes this book essential reading′ - John Owen, Executive Producer of News Xchange and Visiting Professor of Journalism, City University ′This is a meticulously researched book that lays bare the way the war was reported. Decide for yourself whether the media ′embeds′ - of whom I was one - were the world′s eyes and ears inside the military, or merely the puppets of the Pentagon and the Ministry of Defence in London′ - Ben Brown, BBC ′Media at War offers insights into the ways in which media at war inevitably become participants in both the military and the political wars′ - Professor Michael Gurevitch, University of Maryland International media coverage of the war in Iraq provoked public scrutiny as well debate amongst journalists themselves. Media at War offers a critical overview of the coverage in the context of other preceding wars, including the first Gulf War, and opens up the debate on the key questions that emerged during the crisis. For example, - What did we actually gain from ′live, on the spot′ reporting? - Were journalists adequately trained and protected? - How compromised were the so-called ′embedded′ journalists? Thinking Blue | Writing Red: Marxism and the (Post)Human

by Stephen Tumino

Thinking Blue/Writing Red interrogates contemporary culture across a range of texts, from the pandemic (‘Covid’ and ‘Trump Speak’) to high theory (Melville's narratives) and popular culture (Beyoncé's ‘Formation’ and Super Bowl performance, Twin Peaks , metamodern ‘cli-fi’ films). Inspired by Derrida’s idea of the secret, Tumino examines the significance of social movements (Black Lives Matter, Occupy, alter-globalization) and naïve art (Darger, Ryden) to argue that these texts speak of the secrets that capitalism cannot speak. Contending that the cultural surfaces narrate only the ‘nonsecret,’ that to see the social logic of the culture one must dig into what Bruno Latour questions as the ‘deep dark below,’ Thinking Blue/Writing Red reads these texts to tease out the underlying narratives of the culture of capital. This book will be of interest to students in several disciplines, including philosophy, literary and cultural studies, film studies, women's studies, critical race studies, history, LGBTQ+ studies and environmental studies.

Trauma and Racial Minority Immigrants: Turmoil, Uncertainty, and Resistance (Cultural, Racial, and Ethnic Psychology Series)

by Pratyusha Usha Tummala-Narra

This book teaches the impact of the sociopolitical climate on racial minority immigrants, as well as highlights theory, research, and practice concerning the various types of trauma and oppression faced. For racial minority immigrants in the United States, trauma can have both historical and ongoing sources. Today&’s immigrants face a dangerous mix of rising nationalism and xenophobia, alarming rates of displacement within and across nations, war, trafficking, terrorism, and deportation. Multiple traumas stem from these experiences and can be exacerbated by interpersonal violence and other forms of marginalization within communities. This book examines the lasting impact of trauma for racial minority immigrants and subsequent generations. Each chapter explores both the stress and resilience of immigrant groups in the United States, as well as clinical or community-based efforts to address the multiple traumas that affect immigrants and their children. While considering the socioecological contexts of immigrants, the chapters reflect a diversity of theoretical perspectives needed to expand existing treatments for trauma, such as multicultural, feminist, womanist, psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioral, and humanistic theories. In the nuanced pages of this book, you will deepen your understanding of the immigrant experience and develop professional skills to help heal traumatic stress faced by racial minority immigrants.

The Return of the Ripper?: The Murder of Frances Coles

by Kevin Turton

In the early hours of a cold February morning in 1891, the murdered body of Frances Coles was discovered beneath a railway arch in London’s Swallow Gardens. The nature of her wounds, the weapon used to inflict them, and the murder site itself were clear indicators for many that London’s most famous serial killer, Jack the Ripper, had returned. But just how does Whitechapel’s notorious murderer fit in with the facts surrounding the case? Contentious then as it still is today, is it reasonable to assume Frances Coles’ death proved to be the last in the Ripper’s reign of terror? Or was he long gone from Whitechapel’s streets by the time of her murder? There can be no doubting the facts surrounding the killing are just as mysterious as those that involved the murders of Polly Nichols, Annie Chapman, Elizabeth Stride, Catherine Eddowes, Mary Jane Kelly and, intriguingly, several others. All these women died in a similar fashion and their cases still sit in Whitechapel’s unsolved murder files. However, unlike those that had gone before, in the case of Frances Coles there was a serious suspect. How involved was the suspect in the Frances Coles murder and did he have anything to do with any of the earlier murders carried out in Whitechapel? These questions have remained unanswered, until now. In The Return of The Ripper? Kevin Turton re-examines the facts behind the Coles murder case and the potential links with the unsolved Whitechapel murders of the 1880s.

Vote With Your Phone: Why Mobile Voting Is Our Final Shot at Saving Democracy

by Bradley Tusk

Democracy is broken because the way we vote is broken. But there is a solution: Mobile Voting.Gun Control. Abortion. From the halls of Congress, it may seem that Americans are bitterly polarized on the biggest policy issues of the day. But Americans are not as divides as we think, and polls show that most of us largely agree on even the most divisive issues. The problem lies in how we vote. Politics is more extreme because only the most extreme voters turn out in primaries. And with politicians prioritizing reelection above all else, they shun compromise, feed this extremism, and get rewarded for it. If a lot more people vote, the views of the electorate become more mainstream, and our politicians and policies will shift to the center. Mobile voting is the solution. We do just about everything on our phones, and yet we still can't use them to vote. But the technology exists, provides enhanced security over traditional paper ballots, and it could exponentially increase voter turnout by: Allowing Americans to vote from anywhere, on their own scheduleMaking voting more accessible for people who are not well served by mail-in ballots, such as voters with visual impairments and military servicemembers – and their families - overseasProviding more security than traditional paper ballotsIncentivizing younger voters to participate by using technology they're familiar withFrom Bradley Tusk, philanthropist and founder of the Mobile Voting Project, comes a deeply informative and timely analysis of our broken voting system, introducing us to the history, opposition, and potential of voting from our devices. Including essays by Martin Luther King Jr. III and other prominent political figures, Vote with Your Phone shows us that a solution to restoring faith in our representative democracy is right in the palm of our hands.

Brummie Kid: More Tales from Birmingham's Backstreets

Here are more funny, heart-warming stories from the backstreets of Birmingham which are sure to rekindle old memories.

British Newspaper Strips: A Contextual History (Palgrave Studies in Comics and Graphic Novels)

by Adam Twycross

This book explores the history and development of the British daily newspaper strip. It considers such strips within their political, commercial and societal contexts and fills in a crucial section of publishing history that has been largely overlooked by both comics and newspaper studies to date. Beginning with an examination of the role of the image within British publishing in the final decades of the nineteenth century, the book moves on to explore the arrival and development of the first daily strips. It considers the links that bound these strips to surrounding cultural forms, their relationship to their host newspapers, and their position within the wider structures of the emerging popular press. Subsequent chapters cover a range of topics including the impact of the world wars, the anti-comics campaigns of the 1940s and 50s, and how changes to British publishing and wider society shaped the newspaper strips of the final decades of the twentieth century. Culminating with a discussion of the way in which strips became established within the broadsheet press from the 1960s, the book builds to provide a detailed overview of the twentieth century development of this most neglected cultural form.

Artificial Intelligence-Enabled Blockchain Technology and Digital Twin for Smart Hospitals

by Amit Kumar Tyagi

The book uniquely explores the fundamentals of blockchain and digital twin and their uses in smart hospitals. Artificial Intelligence-Enabled Blockchain Technology and Digital Twin for Smart Hospitals provides fundamental information on blockchain and digital twin technology as effective solutions in smart hospitals. Digital twin technology enables the creation of real-time virtual replicas of hospital assets and patients, enhancing predictive maintenance, operational efficiency, and patient care. Blockchain technology provides a secure and transparent platform for managing and sharing sensitive data, such as medical records and pharmaceutical supply chains. By combining these technologies, smart hospitals can ensure data security, interoperability, and streamlined operations while providing patient-centered care. The book also explores the impact of collected medical data from real-time systems in smart hospitals, and by making it accessible to all doctors via a smartphone or mobile device for fast decisions. Inevitable challenges such as privacy concerns and integration costs must, of course, be addressed. However, the potential benefits in terms of improved healthcare quality, reduced costs, and global health initiatives makes the integration of these technologies a compelling avenue for the future of healthcare. Some of the topics that readers will find in this book include: Wireless Medical Sensor Networks in Smart Hospitals ● DNA Computing in Cryptography ● Enhancing Diabetic Retinopathy and Glaucoma Diagnosis through Efficient Retinal Vessel Segmentation and Disease Classification ● Machine Learning-Enabled Digital Twins for Diagnostic And Therapeutic Purposes ● Blockchain as the Backbone of a Connected Ecosystem of Smart Hospitals ● Blockchain for Edge Association in Digital Twin Empowered 6G Networks ● Blockchain for Security and Privacy in Smart Healthcare ● Blockchain-Enabled Internet of Things (IoTs) Platforms for IoT-Based Healthcare and Biomedical Sector ● Electronic Health Records in a Blockchain ● PSO-Based Hybrid Cardiovascular Disease Prediction for Using Artificial Flora Algorithm ● AI and Transfer Learning Based Framework for Efficient Classification And Detection Of Lyme Disease ● Framework for Gender Detection Using Facial Countenances ● Smartphone-Based Sensors for Biomedical Applications ● Blockchain for Improving Security and Privacy in the Smart Sensor Network ● Sensors and Digital Twin Application in Healthcare Facilities Management ● Integration of Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) with Blockchain Technology to Improve Security and Privacy ● Machine Learning-Driven Digital Twins for Precise Brain Tumor and Breast Cancer Assessment ● Ethical and Technological Convergence: AI and Blockchain in Halal Healthcare ● Digital Twin Application in Healthcare Facilities Management ● Cloud-based Digital Twinning for Structural Health Monitoring Using Deep Learning.
