A Nudo per Amore

by Aubree Valentine

Sinossi Cole Off limits.

Origins of Life Volume II: Contemplations and Doubts

by Vladivoj Valkovic

In Origins of Life Volume II, life and its origin are inspected from traditional and unexpected points of view. The book takes an interdisciplinary approach, discussing astrobiology; chemical evolution; and how the Universe accommodates life, molecular biology, and philosophy. It is an open-minded approach, fully referenced throughout, and each chapter includes a further reading section for anyone wishing to learn more about that perspective on the origins of life.First, everything started, with the Big Bang, from nothing. It appears now that everything was aiming toward our existence, some 13.75 × 109 years later, being capable of understanding it all. We did it using powerful tools: science, philosophy, and religion. Although we appreciate the contributions made by philosophy and religion, our contemplations and doubts are based on the plentiful scientific evidence provided. The reader will be guided from make-up of the "life stage" (Universe), tools and materials needed for the living matter to be formed in the small part of the Universe, which one could call Human Neighborhood, or the Local Universe. It contains galaxies, galaxy clusters, and voids, and the Milky Way and its satellites influencing each other during this time span. The book is easy to read, accompanied by numerous references; it could be of use to the expert in the field as well as for curious minds with a scientific, philosophical, or religious background.

Proof of Stake: An Elegy

by Charles Valle

Focusing on immigration, colonialism, and the death of the speaker’s infant daughter, Proof of Stake: An Elegy, Charles Valle’s debut collection, details how “[t]here is an emotional debt accrued/ In grief, compounded daily by wordless songs.” “It’s 2019 and there’s a man who wants me/ to go back to where I came from…There’s a man who wants to/Teach me a lesson on supremacy/There are people who want me to believe in one history.” According to Valle the only solution to this, then, is to refuse and resist— poetically, culturally, politically, every which way.

En La Ardiente Oscuridad

by Antonio Buero Vallejo

The Origins of Consciousness: Thoughts of the Crooked-Headed Fly

by Giorgio Vallortigara

The Origins of Consciousness challenges the dominant view that consciousness is an emergent property of the complex human brain.Based on his pioneering research on a variety of organisms, Vallortigara argues that the most basic forms of mental life do not require large brains, and that the neurological surplus observed in some animals such as humans is likely at the service of memory storage, not of the processes of thought or, even less, of consciousness. The book argues for a simple neural mechanism that can provide the crucial event that brings into effect the minimum condition for subjective experience. Implications of the hypothesis for the appearance of consciousness in different organisms are discussed, as well as links with a variety of fascinating human phenomena such as disorders of consciousness, tickling and visual illusions.Challenging widely accepted theories of consciousness, the book is a must-read for students and researchers of human and animal consciousness.

Mapping Inequality in an Era of Neoliberalism

by Stephen Valocchi

Offering a unique, comprehensive, and critical introduction to increasingly visible social inequalities, this textbook examines the political and economic causes and cultural consequences of a stratifying system that allocates material resources and human dignity on the basis of private profit and labor exploitation.Mapping Inequality in an Era of Neoliberalism foregrounds capitalism as the major source of the power relations in the United States, as a class system that serves the dominant vector of inequality and sets the parameters of social mobility. The book starts with racialized capitalist power and shows how this power is constituted in structures of opportunity and constraint. It also uses ethnographic accounts to “flip the script” to show how individuals in the class structure construct identities.Providing students with tools for understanding, Valocchi engagingly introduces many of the crucial concepts in this area of sociology – power, opportunity structures, ideology, social and cultural capitals, and intersectional class identities – connecting them as part of a uniquely critical approach.

From Encryption to Quantum Computing: The Governance of Information Security and Human Rights (Information Technology and Law Series #38)

by Ot van Daalen

This book examines the implications of information security which plays such an important role in modern digital infrastructure. Information security technologies restrict the (mis)use of this infrastructure, while also constantly being probed by researchers, intelligence agencies and criminals. One can see this cycle of making and breaking everywhere in the digital sphere. An important example of this cat-and-mouse game is the development of quantum computers, which may in the near future break some widely used encryption technologies. This cycle also has implications for human rights: weakening encryption may affect privacy, for example. But the relationship between human rights and information security has not been investigated in-depth before. In this study, state obligations relating to information security are analysed under the European Convention for Human Rights and the EU Charter for Fundamental Rights, focusing on issues as human rights-compatible encryption policy, on how governments should deal with vulnerabilities in software, and whether governments can curtail the development and export of quantum computers. This book analyses the human rights-compatibility of quantum computing governance and offers unique insights into the connection between human rights and information security that will be relevant for legal practitioners, policy-makers and academics involved in this field of research. Ot van Daalen is Assistant Professor at the Institute for Information Law (IViR), Faculty of Law of the University of Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

Power and Technology: A Theory of Social, Technical and Natural Power

by Jan van Dijk

The definition of power varies across disciplines. Social scientists tend to deal with social power, philosophers of technology with the relation between technology and society, and ecologists with the relation between natural and social power. Concepts of power and technology are freely used but this relationship is complex and multifaceted. In this analytic and ambitious textbook, Jan van Dijk brings these perspectives together to provide a more comprehensive answer. In attempting to integrate social, technical, and natural power into one framework, he develops a general concept of power which unites all three – the first time such an attempt has been made. The author argues that it is important to look at these concepts together: natural power is not simply a resource for technology and society, and its inclusion is crucial given the ecological impact of technologies. Overall, nine forms of power which comprise the framework are discussed in each chapter – force, construction, coercion, domination, discipline, dependency, information, persuasion, and authority – and at all levels (individuals, organizations, and societies). Van Dijk concludes with some practical implications and asks two key questions: how can automatic and autonomous technology such as AI be controlled by humans? And, how can we find a more sustainable and less exploitive technology? Power and Technology contains many figures, tables and illustrations and is suitable for students and scholars of technology studies and the sociology, philosophy and history of technology.

A Fire at the Center: Solidarity, Whiteness, and Becoming a Water Protector

by Karen Van Fossan

A firsthand account of two colonial pipelines and their resistance: the Dakota Access Pipeline at Standing Rock and the Line 3 pipeline on Anishinaabe lands. This is a story of becoming and un-becoming. When the living waters that crisscrossed the Standing Rock reservation came under threat, minister of the nearby Unitarian Universalist congregation Karen Van Fossan asked herself what it means, as a descendent of colonialism, to resist her own colonial culture. When another pipeline, Line 3, came to threaten Anishinaabe ways of life, the question became even more resounding. In A Fire at the Center, Van Fossan takes readers behind the scenes of the Dakota Access Pipeline conflict, to penitentiaries where prisoners of war have carried the movement onward, to the jail cell where she was held for protesting Line 3, to a reimagining of decolonized family constellations, and to moments of collective hope and strength. With penetrating insight, she blends memoir, history, and cultural critique. Guided by the generous teachings of Oceti Sakowin Camp near Standing Rock, she investigates layers of colonialism—extractive industries, mass incarceration, broken treaties, disappearances of Indigenous people—and the boundaries of imperial whiteness. For all those striving for liberation and meaningful allyship, Van Fossan’s learnings and practices of genuine, mutual solidarity and her thoughtful critique of whiteness will be transformational.

Bayesian Compendium

by Marcel van Oijen

This book describes how Bayesian methods work. Aiming to demystify the approach, it explains how to parameterize and compare models while accounting for uncertainties in data, model parameters and model structures. Bayesian thinking is not difficult and can be used in virtually every kind of research. How exactly should data be used in modelling? The literature offers a bewildering variety of techniques (Bayesian calibration, data assimilation, Kalman filtering, model-data fusion, …). This book provides a short and easy guide to all these approaches and more. Written from a unifying Bayesian perspective, it reveals how these methods are related to one another. Basic notions from probability theory are introduced and executable R codes for modelling, data analysis and visualization are included to enhance the book’s practical use. The codes are also freely available online. This thoroughly revised second edition has separate chapters on risk analysis and decision theory. It also features an expanded text on machine learning with an introduction to natural language processing and calibration of neural networks using various datasets (including the famous iris and MNIST). Literature references have been updated and exercises with solutions have doubled in number.
