Soziale Kohäsion und Vielfalt in Stadtquartieren: Widersprüche - Diskussion - Umsetzungsverfahren

by Rainer Kilb

Enter Cara, whose parallel selves happen to be exceptionally good at dying—from disease, turf wars, or vendettas they couldn&’t outrun. Cara&’s life has been cut short on 372 worlds in total. On this dystopian Earth, however, Cara has survived. Identified as an outlier and therefore a perfect candidate for multiverse travel, Cara is plucked from the dirt of the wastelands. Now what once made her marginalized has finally become an unexpected source of power. She has a nice apartment on the lower levels of the wealthy and walled-off Wiley City. She works—and shamelessly flirts—with her enticing yet aloof handler, Dell, as the two women collect off-world data for the Eldridge Institute. She even occasionally leaves the city to visit her family in the wastes, though she struggles to feel at home in either place. So long as she can keep her head down and avoid trouble, Cara is on a sure path to citizenship and security. But trouble finds Cara when one of her eight remaining doppelgängers dies under mysterious circumstances, plunging her into a new world with an old secret. Space Governance: Challenges, Threats and Countermeasures (Space Law and Policy)

by Hamid Jahankhani Stefan Kendzierskyj Maria A. Pozza Sina Pournouri

This book delves into the complexities of space governance, offering innovative solutions for a sustainable future. From the pressing issues facing space governance today to creating a consensus on responsibility, ethics, and frameworks, we aim to answer key questions: (i) What are the current challenges? (ii) How do satellites impact society? (iii) What are the potential negative consequences? From communication and early warning systems to global broadcasting and navigation, satellite technology plays a pivotal role in our daily lives. However, this reliance also exposes vulnerabilities, as any disruption to satellite systems could have disastrous consequences across multiple industries. The rapid development of satellite technology, including drones and UAVs, has ushered in a new era of exploration and exploitation. Yet, this progress brings with it new challenges, particularly in terms of governance. As satellites transcend national boundaries, the dynamics of space governance become increasingly complex, with various entities pursuing their own interests without always considering the broader implications. This book bridges the knowledge gap surrounding space technology and highlights the need for increased governance frameworks, data protection, and disciplined deployment. By addressing issues of control, privacy, and security, we pave the way for a more sustainable and responsible approach to space exploration. Join us on this journey as we navigate the evolving landscape of space governance and chart a course towards a brighter future for all.

Space Law Principles and Sustainable Measures (Space Law and Policy)

by Hamid Jahankhani Stefan Kendzierskyj Maria A. Pozza Sina Pournouri

This book helps to bridge the knowledge gap that currently surrounds space technology and its method of exploration and highlights much-needed awareness and attention to an increase in Space Law and sustainable measures. The ever-increasing usage of space-based solutions by both public and commercial entities is producing congestion in the radio frequency spectrum as well as orbital slots. The inevitable commercialization of satellite technology will certainly result in a proliferation of privately owned and managed satellite spacecraft in low-Earth orbits. Cyber vulnerabilities in the Air Force and the DoD frequently ignore satellite ground systems. Space ground system cyber security assaults and investigations include those involving satellite control, communications terminal hacking, and GPS spoofing. A continuous cyber security assessment technique is required for space systems to identify, assess, reduce, and address sophisticated cyber threats. Risk-based compliance, regular cybersecurity risk assessments, and a renewed focus on the elimination of system flaws at the time of design are all necessary for space ground and control systems. Due to the absence of a rigid regulatory framework, satellites play a significant part in the production of space debris, which is a source of increasing worry. Such debris manufactured artificially contributes greatly to the destruction of the environment in Earth’s orbit. There is not a single framework in existence that can appropriately govern contemporary concerns like the security of satellite data and debris in orbit. The Department of Defence (DoD) is now responsible for monitoring all objects in space; however, it cannot require satellite operators to take precautions against potential collisions.

Space Mission Engineering: The New Smad

by James Richard Wertz David F. Everett Jeffery John Puschell

Space Mission Engineering:The New SMAD is an entirely new approach to creating both a text and a practical engineering reference for space mission design. Just as space technology has advanced, the way we learn and work has changed dramatically in recent years. SME combines the best features of a traditional unified text and reference covering the entire field, an electronic version that does many of the calculations for you, and the web that allows regular updates and references to the vast literature base available online. Among the many features of this new approach are: Completely rewritten, updated, and expanded follow-on to the 3rd edition of Space Mission Analysis and Design, the most widely used text and reference in astronautics, covering a great many topics not previously covered, such as CubeSats, Inflatable Structures, Space Economics, End-of-Mission options, Space System Risk Analysis, and new, much more precise formulas for ground station and target coverage. Downloadable electronic spreadsheets for most of the numerical tables and plots in the book that let you, for example, calculate all of the critical parameters for orbits about the Sun, Moon, Earth, and any of the other planets, or even new planets, moons, or stars of your choosing. An annotated bibliography and references on the web that is updated as new references become available and that shows you where to get nearly all of the references with direct links for those available at no cost and where on the web to buy copyright books and professional papers not available for free. All of the cross referencing, careful definitions, and thoroughly explained equations that are the key ingredient of any high quality engineering text or reference, along with the wisdom and experience gained at substantial cost by some of most experienced and knowledgeable space system engineers in the world.

The Space of the World: Can Human Solidarity Survive Social Media and What If It Can't?

by Nick Couldry

Over the past thirty years, humanity has made a huge mistake. We handed over to big tech decisions that have allowed them to build what has become our "space of the world" – the highly artificial space of social media platforms where much of our social life now unfolds. This has proved reckless and has huge social consequences. The toxic effects on social life, young people’s mental health, and political solidarity are well known, but the key factor underlying all this has been missed: the fact that humanity allowed business to construct our space of the world at all and then exploit it for profit. In the process, we ignored two millennia of political thought about the conditions under which a healthy or even a non-violent politics is possible. We endangered the one resource that is in desperately short supply in the face of catastrophic climate change: solidarity. Is human solidarity possible in a world of continuous digital connection and commercially managed platforms, and what if it isn’t?In the first book of his trilogy, Humanising the Future, Nick Couldry offers a radical new vision of how to design our digital spaces so that they build, rather than erode, both solidarity and community. This trenchant and vividly written book stresses that we cannot afford not to care for our space of the world. We need to rebuild it together.

Space Vehicle Maneuvering, Propulsion, Dynamics and Control: A Textbook for Engineers

by Ranjan Vepa

This textbook introduces space vehicle maneuvering, propulsion, dynamics and control, and discusses the space environment and its influence on the spacecraft propulsion system. This is followed by an in depth description of Keplerian celestial mechanics, co-planar and non-planar orbital transfers involving both impulsive and continuous manoeuvers, and perturbation effects that characterize the real non-Keplerian nature of orbital motion. Dr. Vepa then explains the use of restricted two-body and three-body dynamics as descriptors of spacecraft motion, the limitations of these approach in terms of orbital perturbations and an understanding of the physical source and influence of these perturbations, and principles of the optimal synthesis of trajectories. Featuring many exercises, design case studies, and extensive use of MATLAB/SIMULINK and MATLAB analytical tools, the book is ideal for graduate students, post graduate students, researchers, as well professionals in the industry.

Space Warfare: Strategy, Principles and Policy (Space Power and Politics)

by John J. Klein

This book examines military space strategy within the context of the land and naval strategies of the past. This second edition has been updated and revised, with several new chapters included. The book examines competition and conflict in the space domain, including the methods used and sound counterstrategies to thwart a competitor’s efforts. Contrary to many spacepower pundits, the book explains that neither is the space domain inherently offense-dominant nor is there a first-mover advantage when incorporating a sound space strategy. Offering new insights into the nature of strategic competition in space, this second edition leans heavily on the British maritime experience and the work of Julian Corbett to provide a strategic framework for understanding competition, crisis, and conflict in the space domain. It also includes important concepts from leading theorists and strategists, both past and present, to amplify concepts and provide additional insights into the functioning of space strategy. The book provides a foundational framework by underscoring that space strategy is shaped by the fundamental nature of all warfare, along with the universal principles of strategy and the essential unity of all strategic experience. Warfare is warfare, no matter the domain of operations, and consequently, policymakers and military leaders can look to historical experience and knowledge of past strategic frameworks to help gain insights into the functioning of space warfare. This book will appeal to students of spacepower, defense and strategic studies, and International Relations.

Spaceland: A Novel of the Fourth Dimension

On New Year's Eve, hoping to impress his wife, he sneaks home the prototype. It brings no new warmth to their cooling relationship, but it does attract someone else's attention. When Joe sees a set of lips talking to him (floating in midair) and feels the poke of a disembodied finger (inside him), it's not because of the champagne he's drunk. He has just met Momo, a woman from the All, a world of four spatial dimensions for whom our narrow world, which she calls Spaceland, is something like a rug, but one filled with motion and life. Momo has a business proposition for Joe, an offer she won't let him refuse. The upside potential becomes much clearer to him once she helps him grow a new eye (on a stalk) that can see in the fourth-dimensional directions, and he agrees. After that it's a wild ride through a million-dollar night in Las Vegas, a budding addiction to tasty purple 4-D food, a failing marriage, eye-popping excursions into the All, and encounters with Momo's foes, rubbery red critters who steal money, offer sage advice and sometimes messily explode. Joe is having the time of his life, until Momo's scheme turns out to have angles he couldn't have imagined. Suddenly the fate of all life here in Spaceland is at stake.Rudy Rucker is a past master at turning mathematical concepts into rollicking science fiction adventure, from Spacetime Donuts and White Light to The Hacker and the Ants. The Spartan Regime: Its Character, Origins and Grand Strategy (Yale Library of Military History)

by Paul Anthony Rahe

“[A] monumental history . . . explaining . . . how Sparta’s early strategic role in the Greek world was inseparable from the uniqueness of its origins and values.” (David Hanson, The Hoover Institution, author of The Other Greeks)For centuries, ancient Sparta has been glorified in song, fiction, and popular art. Yet the true nature of a civilization described as a combination of democracy and oligarchy by Aristotle, considered an ideal of liberty in the ages of Machiavelli and Rousseau, and viewed as a forerunner of the modern totalitarian state by many twentieth-century scholars has long remained a mystery. In a bold new approach to historical study, noted historian Paul Rahe attempts to unravel the Spartan riddle by deploying the regime-oriented political science of the ancient Greeks, pioneered by Herodotus, Thucydides, Plato, Xenophon, and Polybius, in order to provide a more coherent picture of government, art, culture, and daily life in Lacedaemon than has previously appeared in print, and to explore the grand strategy the Spartans devised before the arrival of the Persians in the Aegean.“Persuasive.” —Thomas E. Ricks, New York Times Book Review“Rahe thinks and writes big. . . . The Spartan Regime breaks important new ground.” —Jacob Howland, Commentary“An important new history. . . . The story of this ancient clash of civilizations, masterfully told by Paul Rahe . . . provides a timely reminder about strategic challenges and choices confronting the United States.” —John Maurer, Claremont Review of Books“Rahe’s ability to reveal the human side beneath [an] austere exterior is one of many reasons to read this beautifully written, meticulously researched, and deeply engaging book.” —Waller R. Newell, Washington Free Beacon“A serious scholarly endeavor.” —Eric W. Robinson, American Historical Review

The Spartan Way

by Nic Fields

“One of the best books about the ancient world I’ve ever read. . . . lively and informative.” —Toy Solder & Model FigureFor a period of some 200 years, Sparta was acknowledged throughout the Greek world as the home of the finest soldiers—Xenophon called them “the only true craftsmen in matters of war.” In this book, Nic Fields explains the reasons for this superiority, how their reputation for invincibility was earned (and deliberately manipulated), and how it was ultimately shattered. The Spartan Way examines how Spartan society, through its rigid laws and brutal educational system, was thoroughly militarized and devoted to producing warriors suited to the intense demands of hoplite warfare—professional killers inculcated with the values of unwavering obedience and a willingness to fight and die for their city. The role of Spartan women, as mothers and wives, in shaping the warrior ethic is considered, as are the role of uniform and rigorous training in enhancing the small-unit cohesion within the phalanx and the psychological intimidation of the enemy. The final chapters chart the course of Sparta’s successes through the period of the Persian and Peloponnesian Wars, through the Corinthian and Theban wars of the fourth century BC, which culminated with the shattering military defeats at Leuctra and 2nd Mantinea, and the years of her decline with the Spartans as a source of mercenaries for the wars of other states.Includes maps
