Urban Village Redevelopment in Beijing, China: New Housing Opportunities for Migrant Workers
by Ran LiuThe book provides a multi-stage assessment of the changing housing opportunities of migrant workers in the three stages of Beijing’s urban village development (emergence, erasure and preservation). The volume re-theorizes Henry Lefebvre’s notion of the “right to the city” as a largely property-based concept that falls within the city’s hybrid tenure matrix of varying degrees of tenure security and formality that is undergoing entrepreneurialization or gentrification. This is another highly valuable contribution to China studies from the geographical perspective of the “territorial politics” at play in the process of urban village redevelopment, which has fostered a new propertied landowning class as winners, while moving low-wage migrants. The book takes the reader on a fascinating journey from peri-urban villages to IT worker villages to artists’ villages, revealing a restless landscape of urbanism and state-centered governance, as well as bottom-up counterplots. The fieldwork explores the contradictions of urban village redevelopment in Beijing. On the one hand, it is state-dominated and yet creates new housing opportunities for migrants; on the other, it disrupts old orders but also encourages new forms of grassroots alliances. The empirical studies of Beijing’s urban villages enrich Henry Lefebvre’s discourse on “planetary urbanisation,” Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari’s notion of the “rhizome,” and Elinor Ostrom’s ideas on the wise management of the “commons.”

Vanishing Vienna: Modernism, Philosemitism, and Jews in a Postwar City (Jewish Culture and Contexts)

The book reveals continuity in Vienna’s cultural history across this period and a framework for interpreting Viennese culture that relies on antisemitism, philosemitism, and a related discourse of Jewish presence and absence. This observation demands a new chronology of cultural reconstruction that links the Nazi and postwar years, and a new geography that includes the history of refugees from Nazi Vienna.Rather than presenting the Nazi, exile, and postwar periods as discrete chapters of Vienna’s history, Tanzer argues that they are part of a continuous spectrum of cultural evolution—the result of which was the creation of a coherent Austrian identity and culture that emerged by the 1950s. As she shows, antisemitism and philosemitism were not contradictory forces in post-Nazi Austrian culture. They were deeply interconnected aspirations in a city where nostalgia for the past dominated cultural reconstruction efforts and supported seemingly contradictory impulses. Viennese nostalgia at times concealed the perpetuation of antisemitic fantasies of the city without Jews. by Sky CorganSich in einer neuen Stadt einzuleben, war schwer für Tara Edwards. Zum Glück traf sie Darren Jones, dessen Familie die halbe Stadt gehörte. Er bot ihr Schutz und Freundschaft. Was er im Gegenzug verlangte, war jedoch mehr, als Tara geben wollte. Schlussendlich verlässt Tara ihre Heimatstadt, um ein neues Leben anzufangen. Die Dinge entwickeln sich jedoch anders als üblich und sie stellt schon bald fest, dass man nicht immer das möchte, was man eigentlich braucht. Als tragische Umstände dafür sorgen, dass sie in ihre verhasste Stadt zurückkehren muss, ist es, als würde jeder, den sie je verletzt hat, sie heimsuchen. Gerade, als die Geister der Vergangenheit sie in die Verdammnis zerren wollen, erscheint ein Licht am Ende des Tunnels, in Form ihres alten Freundes. Irgendwie werden sie aber mehr als nur Freunde, was dafür sorgt, dass Tara zwischen zwei Männern steht und zwischen Vergangenheit und Zukunft festhängt. „Verletzt“ basiert vage auf den im „Wrong or Write“ erwähnten Roman „Behind Her Green Eyes“.
