Special and Differential Treatment Reform in the WTO: 'The Differentiated Differentiation Approach

by Aniekan Ukpe

This book proposes a new approach to differentiating between developing countries in the context of special and differential treatment (SDT) in the World Trade Organisation.Offering unique insights into SDT reform in the WTO, the book proposes the method of differentiated differentiation and demonstrates its operationalization using the WTO Customs Valuation Agreement. Through identifying key indicators to categorize constraints faced by developing countries, the book establishes objective criteria to depoliticize access to SDT. Promoting a case-by-case approach, the book also employs a statistics-based score procedure to determine a threshold for graduating countries out of SDT. Through flexible tracking and evidence-based arguments, the book provides a transitional method of reform which maintains full compliance with WTO members’ obligations. The book will be of importance to academics and students of international law, especially those with an interest in international trade law and the WTO, as well as legal professionals and policymakers.

Speech and the City: Multilingualism, Decoloniality and the Civic University

by null Yaron Matras

The Brexit debate has been accompanied by a rise in hostile attitudes to multilingualism. However, cities can provide an important counter-weight to political polarisation by forging civic identities that embrace diversity. In this timely book, Yaron Matras describes the emergence of a city language narrative that embraces and celebrates multilingualism and helps forge a civic identity. He critiques linguaphobic discourses at a national level that regard multilingualism as deficient citizenship. Drawing on his research in Manchester, he examines the 'multilingual utopia', looking at multilingual spaces across sectors in the city that support access, heritage, skills and celebration. The book explores the tensions between decolonial approaches that inspire activism for social justice and equality, and the neoliberal enterprise that appropriates diversity for reputational and profitability purposes, prompting critical reflection on calls for civic university engagement. It is essential reading for anyone concerned about ways to protect cultural pluralism in our society.

Spice: The 16th-Century Contest that Shaped the Modern World

by Roger Crowley

The story of the sixteenth-century&’s epic contest for the spice trade, which propelled European maritime exploration and conquest across Asia and the Pacific Spices drove the early modern world economy, and for Europeans they represented riches on an unprecedented scale. Cloves and nutmeg could reach Europe only via a complex web of trade routes, and for decades Spanish and Portuguese explorers competed to find their elusive source. But when the Portuguese finally reached the spice islands of the Moluccas in 1511, they set in motion a fierce competition for control. Roger Crowley shows how this struggle shaped the modern world. From 1511 to 1571, European powers linked up the oceans, established vast maritime empires, and gave birth to global trade, all in the attempt to control the supply of spices. Taking us on voyages from the dockyards of Seville to the vastness of the Pacific, the volcanic Spice Islands of Indonesia, the Arctic Circle, and the coasts of China, this is a narrative history rich in vivid eyewitness accounts of the adventures, shipwrecks, and sieges that formed the first colonial encounters—and remade the world economy for centuries to follow.

Spirit Structures of Papua New Guinea: Art and Architecture in the Kaiaimunucene (Routledge Research in Architecture)

by Michael Hirschbichler

This book investigates the art and architecture of Papua New Guinean spirit structures with a multi-perspectival approach that combines cultural and social sciences with building, architectural, and spatial research. It offers the first comprehensive study of the spirit houses of New Guinea that exists to date. The book’s aim is twofold: First, it aims to investigate the spirit structures and their associated cultural cosmos in detail. For this purpose, a representative selection of traditional buildings and artworks from different regions of Papua New Guinea is documented and analyzed, and theories for their understanding are formulated. In this course, the author develops a spatial theory of anthropological concepts – such as myths, signs, persons, and rituals. Secondly, this analysis is then situated in the broader context of the Anthropocene/Kaiaimunucene. Transforming the historical spirit structures into models for future-oriented cultural imagination, the consequences for contemporary productions of space and ways of worldmaking in light of existential challenges are traced. The book thus offers more-than-human and more-than-secular concepts for building, art, and worldmaking that are of critical importance in the ongoing Anthropocene/Kaiaimunucene. It will be of interest to researchers and students of architecture, anthropology, cultural studies, environmental humanities, and adjacent disciplines.Part I of the book was translated from German by Melanie Janet Sindelar.

Sport and Sleep: Applied Sleep Research for Sports Science

by Daniel Erlacher

At first glance, sport and sleep appear to be two topics that could hardly be more different: Physical and mental peak performance on the one hand - inactivity and unconsciousness on the other. This book is dedicated to this new issue and uses various examples from sports practice to show that there are numerous points of contact here. A theoretical section at the beginning introduces the basics of sports science and sleep research, while the much larger section is dedicated to its application in a sporting environment. Among other things, the sleep behaviour of athletes is presented, including how jet lag in sport and sleep deprivation can become noticeable before sporting performances and competitions. It also deals with the dream experience of motorised actions and training in lucid dreams. The book is aimed at those interested in sports science, sleep medicine, psychology and neurology, as well as trainers and sports enthusiasts who would like to read up on the subject in moredetail.

Sports and Human Rights (Interdisciplinary Studies in Human Rights #10)

by Andreas R. Ziegler Sophie Weerts Véronique Boillet

Based on a series of themes and case studies, this book aims to illustrate the impact of sports policies and practices on individuals and their identities, and to analyze the potential solutions offered by International human rights law (IHRL) for these infringements. It bridges the gap between IHRL and sports studies, and will be useful to scholars in both fields, especially those unfamiliar with each other’s work. Furthermore, by investigating the context of sport and its governance, this collection offers a series of valuable insights, enabling the development of an interpretation of ‘law in context’ for legal scholars in the field of human rights. As the governance and regulation of sport are seen as illustrations of other forms of normativity, this book also contributes to the conversation about the transnational dimension of law and legal orders. In this respect, it illustrates that normative autonomy in the field of sport, associated with the idea of lex sportiva, tends to be relative regarding IHRL. The sporting environment is not disconnected from major contemporary social issues: it constitutes a public space in which injustices can be denounced, but also the theater in which prejudices are perpetuated against various parties, such as athletes or workers. IHRL commonly addresses attacks on individual dignity and social justice issues by guaranteeing rights to individuals and offering them protection mechanisms. In this context, can IHRL solve the problems encountered in the sporting environment? This is the question that animates this volume. This is an open access book.

by Manfred Bruhn Peter Rohlmann

This book provides basic knowledge and understanding for successful sports sponsorship. The structure of the book is based on the individual phases of analysis, planning, implementation and monitoring of sponsorship concepts.
