Preventing Crime: What We Know, and What We Need to Do

For decades now, criminological researchers, challenged to assist in this task, have been asking: “What is working to reduce crime?” “What could work better in preventing crime before it erupts?” “What have we not tried, but could try in the field of crime control?” Pleasingly, the research outputs on this subject are voluminous and growing. They regularly inform policymaking in productive ways. This, in turn, has led and continues to lead to good crime prevention outcomes, but a lot more could be done. The author sets out twelve key priorities, designed to reduce victimisation, and tackle street crime and white-collar crime especially, each of them based upon a social justice framework. These priorities draw upon his extensive writings on the topic of law and criminology over the past forty years. There is, he concludes, far more value in tackling the societal factors that allow crime to emerge, grow and persist than applying a strict application of the criminal law and the justice system that feeds upon it.

Guaranteed Computational Methods for Self-Adjoint Differential Eigenvalue Problems (SpringerBriefs in Mathematics)

This monograph presents a study of newly developed guaranteed computational methodologies for eigenvalue problems of self-adjoint differential operators. It focuses on deriving explicit lower and upper bounds for eigenvalues, as well as explicit estimations for eigenfunction approximations. Such explicit error estimations rely on the finite element method (FEM) along with a new theory of explicit quantitative error estimation, diverging from traditional studies that primarily focus on qualitative results. To achieve quantitative error estimation, the monograph begins with an extensive analysis of the hypercircle method, that is, the Prager–Synge theorem. It introduces a novel a priori error estimation technique based on the hypercircle method. This facilitates the explicit estimation of Galerkin projection errors for equations such as Poisson's and Stokes', which are crucial for obtaining lower eigenvalue bounds via conforming FEMs. A thorough exploration of the fundamental theory of projection-based explicit lower eigenvalue bounds under a general setting of eigenvalue problems is also offered. This theory is extensively detailed when applied to model eigenvalue problems associated with the Laplace, biharmonic, Stokes, and Steklov differential operators, which are solved by either conforming or non-conforming FEMs. Moreover, there is a detailed discussion on the Lehmann–Goerisch theorem for the purpose of high-precision eigenvalue bounds, showing its relationship with previously established theorems, such as Lehmann–Maehly's method and Kato's bound. The implementation details of this theorem with FEMs, a topic rarely covered in existing literature, are also clarified. Lastly, the monograph introduces three new algorithms to estimate eigenfunction approximation errors, revealing the potency of classical theorems. Algorithm I extends Birkhoff’s result that works for simple eigenvalues to handle clustered eigenvalues, while Algorithm II generalizes the Davis–Kahan theorem, initially designed for strongly formulated eigenvalue problems, to address weakly formulated eigenvalue problems. Algorithm III utilizes the explicit Galerkin projection error estimation to efficiently handle Galerkin projection-based approximations.

An Inquiry into Women Representation in Management: A Case Study of Indian Industries (India Studies in Business and Economics)

This book explores the status of women representation in management in Indian industries. Recognizing that women managers are facing barriers in achieving top level of management positions in industries, it adopts unique methodology of involving men and women managers as respondents to understand the key issues of gender diversity, glass ceiling, glass walls, glass cliffs, and gender inequality in the Indian corporate scenario. The book, via its six chapters, explores these key issues through the lens of feminist theories under four dimensions – personal, work, organisational and social – and contains an extensive literature review to understand the root causes of these issues. Secondly, it discusses a pilot study conducted to understand the perspectives about career growth of women managers. Outcome of this pilot study works towards conceptualising factors under four dimensions, mentioned above, influencing women participation in management, and to develop survey tools for further quantitative study. Thirdly, for the empirical analysis, the book employs exploratory factor analysis (EFA) to identify factors under each of these four dimensions; and structure of the relationship between factors and women representation in management is confirmed by the confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). This book is beneficial for several stakeholders as it is a multidimensional study. Constitutional Monarchy of the Twenty-First Century

This is the first book to investigate how constitutional monarchy could survive in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, during which many monarchies were overthrown by revolutions or coups d’état in Asia, the Middle East, Africa and Europe. Today we have about 200 countries in the world, but there are only 28 which have their own monarchical sovereigns – emperor, king, queen, grand duke, prince, sultan or emir – and even if we add the Commonwealth realms to these, we would find almost three-quarters of the globe are republics at this moment. So will monarchy disappear from human history in the not-too-distant future? This book shows how the European monarchs have played important roles not only as heads of state, but also as heads of nation, in which they are symbols of unity and national identity, of continuity and stability, fountainheads of national achievement and success, and supporters of social service. Consequently they have grappled with difficult contemporary issues such as social welfare, the global environment, the protection of wildlife, multiculturalism and the LGBT movement which national governments would not be able to deal with sufficiently in each country. This book also suggests reforming the existing emperor system of Japan in reference to the activities of European constitutional monarchy.
