Development and Regional Stability in Africa: Unlocking Potential

by Adeoye O. Akinola Emmaculate Asige Liaga

This book critically engages with the development-security nexus in contemporary Africa, coinciding with the twentieth anniversary of the African Union (AU). Despite widespread discourse on the 'Africa Rising' narrative, many African states grapple with persistent economic challenges, violent conflicts, Afrophobia, and democratic setbacks. The AU's efforts, alongside those of other regional actors, to leverage regionalism for driving socio-economic and political development while ensuring peace and security have yielded limited results. Consequently, this edited volume takes an incisive approach to unpack the complex and vexed issues obstructing sustainable advancements in security and development in Africa. While existing studies have predominantly centered on conventional conflict and development concerns, this book sheds light on the emerging realities and evolving dynamics shaping the region's trajectory. Utilising a comprehensive case study approach, the book places Africa's challenges within both historical and contemporary contexts, aiming to present sustainable policy options to bridge the myriad gaps in the continent's peace, security, and governance architecture. By addressing the intricacies of balancing individual state interests with collective regional advancement, this volume offers a pathway toward unlocking Africa's potential for development and fostering a prosperous and harmonious 'Africa We Want'.

Geist und Buchstabe: Ein neuer Versuch über Friedrich Schlegels Konzept der Universalpoesie

by Yiyun Lu

Racism and Antisemitism in Fascist Italy: The Politics, Ideology, and Imagery of ‘La Difesa della razza’ (Routledge Studies in the Modern History of Italy)

by Francesco Cassata

The racism and antisemitism of Fascist Italy have often been described as ‘mild’, ‘cultural’, ‘spiritual’, and essentially non-violent, especially in comparison with the racial ideology of Nazi Germany. This book challenges this simplistic interpretation with a thorough analysis of the texts and images of the magazine La Difesa della razza (Defence of the race), the principal public voice of Fascist biological racism, which appeared fortnightly between 1938 and 1943 under the editorship of Telesio Interlandi, Mussolini’s ‘unofficial mouthpiece’, with governmental financial support.A negative icon of the propaganda of Fascist racism, La Difesa della razza first appeared in August 1938 shortly before the passing of Italy’s Racial Laws, but had a long gestation. It was the expression of a Fascist cultural milieu – journalists, writers, artists, and architects – headed by Interlandi, whose racism and antisemitism dated back to the end of the First World War.By placing the magazine’s emergence in this longer timescale, and exploring the interrelationships of political action, ideological discourse, and imagery, this book also demonstrates how the project of ‘anthropological revolution’ – building the New Man – was a central element of Italian Fascism, from the very beginning to the deportation of Italian Jews. This new English edition has been thoroughly revised and updated.

Telemedicine for Adolescent and Young Adult Health Care: A Case-based Guide

by Yolanda N. Evans Sarah A. Golub Gina M. Sequeira

While there are general texts on telemedicine and guidelines on the use of telemedicine in pediatrics, there are no texts focused specifically on the provision of health care to adolescents and young adults using telemedicine. Adolescents and young adults have more unique health care needs than both adults and children, including the need to receive developmentally appropriate services and care that may be provided in settings outside of the standard clinical office (such as school-based care). In addition, in most US states, adolescents are capable of providing consent for some but not all medical care, highlighting the critical importance of providing services in a manner that adheres to regulations around consent and confidentiality. Telemedicine for Adolescent and Young Adult Health Care offers readers case-based content written by experts in the fields of adolescent medicine and telemedicine. There are a variety of chapters that include anemphasis on equity, diversity, and inclusion and will include local and federal rules, regulations, and considerations for ensuring privacy in the modern electronic health record. The first chapter offers a general overview and history of telemedicine. The next one focuses on telemedicine and epidemics. The chapters in the middle detail a variety of topics related to telemedicine such as confidentiality, equity, telemedicine and learners, school-based care, telemedicine in primary care and ambulatory consultative care.
