Research and Innovation for Sustainable Development Goals: Proceedings of NERC 2022

by Boeing Laishram Rajshree Bedamatta Sparsh Johari

Almost immediately after the UN Secretary-General called for a Decade of Action to deliver Sustainable Development Goals at the SDG Summit of 2019, the world faced massive COVID-19 induced disruptions at the cost to the global economy. To accelerate progress in the SDGs, the decade of 2020-2030 requires research, innovations, and commitments of various stakeholders at all levels – locally, nationally, and globally. This book contributes to the action agenda by focusing on India's opportunities and challenges, emphasizing India's northeast. Many countries have taken significant actions toward realizing the SDG mission and vision. However, due to a lack of knowledge, research, and innovation, there is a considerable disparity in the countries' actions. Few developed countries have made significant progress in realizing the SDGs, while many developing countries struggle. This book brings together diverse views on various domains of SDGs, providing a sub-national framework for addressing the gaps and meeting the goals.

China Rule of Law and the West

by Michael Hooper

This book reveals how the Chinese Party-State uses "ideo-political education" to inculcate young citizens with official narratives on law. It provides an account of China's version of "rule of law" under the Yifa Zhiguo paradigm, arguing that authorities see law as a tool to apply when convenient and ignore when it impedes Party-State goals. Moving beyond the question of whether China's system can count as a rule of law order, this book identifies three consistent features of Chinese law reform since the Opening and Reform era began: the supremacy of the Communist Party of China over the law, instrumentalism, and reform-repression dualism. This book uniquely combines the "what" with the "how" of China's "rule of law" efforts. China law researchers will benefit from understanding how China's young adults learn about official law narratives. A more general audience interested in China's legal and political system will gain valuable insights from the analysis of China's "rule of law." The growing tensions between China and the West mean that now, more than ever, scholars and policymakers need to properly understand China. Understanding what Chinese officials mean when they talk about the rule of law in China helps avoid policy errors made from mistakenly assuming that Western definitions are universal. The contents of this book can also inform government and university efforts to properly accommodate Chinese students in the West while mitigating harmful manifestations of the nationalist ideology, in part implanted by ideo-political education.

Disaster and Climate Risk Education: Insights from Knowledge to Action (Disaster Risk Reduction)

by Ayse Yildiz Rajib Shaw

Education serves as a cornerstone for gaining knowledge and taking initiative. However, despite efforts in disaster and climate risk education (DCRE), a gap often exists between awareness and meaningful action. To bridge this gap and promote a progression from awareness to empowerment, we offer the KIDA (Knowledge Interest Desire Action) framework. The foundation of this framework is a collaboration between schools, communities, and families, which calls for support from educational boards and local governments. Following international tragedies like the Turkey-Syria earthquake of 2023, as well as the ever-changing difficulties posed by climate change, DCRE has to be given priority immediately. Our book proposes a comprehensive strategy that includes governance, capacity building, education in schools and the community, and technology integration. Our insights, analyses, and practical policy suggestions are based on multidisciplinary research and worldwide case studies, with the goal of strengthening resilience and cultivating a generation committed to sustainability. This book provides a comprehensive exploration of DCRE. It aims to prepare individuals and communities to face the challenges of a changing world head-on by improving knowledge and promoting preparedness.
