Island Tourism Policy and Sustainable Development (Advances in Tourism)

by Michelle T. McLeod

This insightful and timely book is the first of its kind to explore specific policies, issues, challenges, and practices that will enhance the sustainable development of tourism in island destinations, including island nations, twin-island nations, and sub-national island jurisdictions (SNIJs).Islands are faced with a myriad of challenges: economic failure, natural disasters, political upheavals, and socio-cultural dilemmas. Tourism is the most likely means for economic development in many islands and yet, specific tailor-made policies for an island context have received limited exploration and discussion. The policies explored in this volume include those relating to management, marketing, governance, and sustainable development of the tourism sector in islands. This book is ‘go-to’ guide on the topic and the case studies and best practices throughout the book provide practical knowledge and insight. The volume posits a concise and logically structured review of island tourism in a post-pandemic context, exploring specific tourism policies that will contribute to the enhancement of sustainable tourism development in islands, particularly those in developing countries. This significant book offers insight into best practices and will be of interest to academics, researchers, policymakers, and students of tourism policy, planning, and sustainable development.

Julian of Norwich and the Ecological Crisis: Restoring Porosity (Routledge Science and Religion Series)

by Claire Gilbert

This book presents ecological insights drawn from a reading of Julian of Norwich, considering how effectively she can help us in our current plight. The argument is that to address the ecological crisis with the mindset that created it will only cause more problems, and that to really undo the harm humanity has done and continues to do will take a transformation of selfhood and hence of perception, from the Gestell, technological self that is the child of the Enlightenment to the porous self that we truly are, underneath our buffered, separated, controlling and lonely exterior. The author suggests Julian of Norwich’s text Revelations of Divine Love has the power to effect this transformation if we can learn to read it as disciples, not masters, just as Julian received and responded to her revelations as a performative, porous, receptive disciple. The chapters describe the technological mindset and its causal relationship with the ecological crisis, and articulate in detail how, if they are to transform us, we must read the Julian texts, taking first steps away from our technological selves as we do so. The book then takes significant passages from Julian and reads them in the performative, porous way that has been recommended. It will be of particular interest to scholars of theology and ecology, as well as medieval mysticism.

Kate Bush and the Moving Image

by Stephen Glynn

In this unique study, Stephen Glynn demonstrates that Kate Bush’s work, in both sound and vision, has long been influenced and characterised by, and at times aimed at, film and television media. The volume explores in depth Bush’s ‘music of allusion’ and analyses first the significance of film and television references throughout the lyrics and settings of her songs, beginning with her breakthrough hit ‘Wuthering Heights’. It also surveys the shaping presence of film and television in the look, narrative and artistry of her music videos, including the examination of celebrated works such as ‘Cloudbusting’ and ‘Hounds of Love’. Finally, the book assesses Bush’s most intensive cinematic undertaking, her 1993 album The Red Shoes, with its evident homage to the 1948 film of Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger, and its concurrent visual reworking as Bush’s sole film venture, The Line, The Cross & The Curve. Thus, with its deployment across music, video and film, Glynn demonstrates the centrality of Kate Bush’s cinephilia to her work.Accessible yet academically rigorous, Kate Bush and the Moving Image is a stand-out study of the iconic singer-songwriter’s discography and cinematic ventures. It will appeal to both students and scholars of Film, Television, Media, Cultural and Popular Music Studies.

Law, Society and Corruption: Lessons from the Central Asian Context (Law, Justice and Power)

by Rustamjon Urinboyev Måns Svensson

This book presents new socio-legal perspectives and insights on the social life of corruption and anticorruption in authoritarian regimes. This book takes up the case of Uzbekistan—an authoritarian regime in Central Asia and one of the most corrupt countries in the world according to Transparency International’s Corruption Perceptions Index—and examines the corruption that developed in a tightly closed authoritarian regime permeated by a large-scale shadow economy, a weak rule of law, and a collectivist legal culture. Building on socio-legal frameworks of legal compliance, living law and legal pluralism, the central argument of the book is that the roles, meanings, and logics of corruption are fluid, and depend on a myriad of structural variables, and contextual and situational factors. This book will be of value to researchers, academics, and students in the fields of sociology of law, legal anthropology, and Central Asian studies, especially those with an interest in the intersection of law, society, and corruption in authoritarian regime contexts.

Macroeconomics After the General Theory: Fundamental Uncertainty, Animal Spirits and Shifting Equilibrium in a Competitive Economy (Routledge Frontiers of Political Economy)

by Angel Asensio

Both Keynes’s General Theory and orthodox economics seek to understand how competitive markets work, but they diverge sharply with respect to the nature and properties of the competitive equilibrium. The reason, as Keynes himself pointed out, is that the General Theory recognises that the future consequences of current decisions are fundamentally uncertain which, contra the orthodox view, radically affects decision-making and the functioning of markets. This book approaches macroeconomics on the basis of the General Theory, of which a new exposition is offered in the first part, purged of the grey areas that resulted from the context in which it was written, and of the considerable confusion generated for almost a century by the vain attempts of orthodox thinking to integrate such novel ideas in its deficient conceptual framework. The second part aims at extending the conceptual framework to the open economy and considering how uncertainty affects international linkages. The third part proposes an integrated conceptual and formal framework for analysing how changes in the national and international context, including macroeconomic policies, affect an economy. This new examination of General Theory is a major addition to the literature on Keynes, macroeconomics, economic theory and the history of economic thought.

The Magma of War: An Ontology of the Global

by Edgar Illas

War, from the conflicts in the Middle East and Russia/Ukraine to Mexican narco-violence, from neocolonial land grabs in the Global South to racial, border, health, and climate crises all over the planet, defines the most extreme and contradictory expression of the global world. In this fascinating exploration on the history of the thinking of conflict, Edgar Illas departs from military and sociological analyses to propose a theoretical exploration of war as the ontological force that produces political orders.Magma is used as a geological metaphor to theorize the mixtures of politics and war that organize, and disorganize, global society. Divided into two parts, Illas’ study begins by surveying some of the most important thinkers of war, moving from classical antiquity to the twentieth century. Each thinker provides a different inflection in the historical evolution of the being of war. The second part turns to a theorization of the twenty-first century to claim that conflictive relations between capital, state power, political movements, and social life in globalization culminate and at the same time reiterate the paradoxes of war as an ontological event. The Magma of War is an energizing contribution to the task of rethinking politics in relation to war and an invaluable resource to all those conscious of the unstable forms of contemporary social and political life.

This second edition reflects these changes, and has been completely updated to address progress in the practical application of risk management to projects. Two new chapters have been added, the first discussing how to manage risk in complex projects, and the second considering the role and influence of risk leaders outside the project arena in setting the context and environment for successful risk management. New material also addresses enterprise risk management and risky decision-making.Throughout, the book offers a concise description of current best practice in project risk management whilst introducing the latest developments, to enable project managers, project sponsors and others responsible for managing risk on projects to do just that – effectively.
