Atlas of Diagnostic Pathology in Nonhuman Primates

by Andrew D. Miller Ivanela Kondova-Perseng Keith G. Mansfield

The Atlas of Diagnostic Pathology in Nonhuman Primates offers the first extensively illustrated collection of classic lesions in nonhuman primate diseases and pathological conditions, compiled by an international team of expert contributors. Organized by infectious and noninfectious conditions, the atlas comprehensively covers viral, bacterial, fungal, and parasitic diseases, as well as nutritional, toxic, and metabolic causes, and genetic, age-related, neoplastic, and noninfectious inflammatory conditions. Since nonhuman primates are an indispensable resource for efficacy and safety evaluation of novel therapeutic strategies targeting clinically important human diseases, research with monkeys is critical to understand how to prevent and treat emerging infectious diseases such as Zika virus disease, Ebola, Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS), COVID-19/SARS-CoV-2/coronavirus, pandemic flu, and many more. This book is intended to serve veterinary practitioners in university facilities, zoos, biotechnological and pharmaceutical companies, as well as clinicians, researchers, and students engaged in nonhuman primate research.

Atlas and Clinical Reference Guide for Corneal Topography

by Ming Wang Lance Kugler

Corneal topography has become essentially a pattern recognition trade, best learned by viewing multiple images of representative patterns. In spite of this, currently available topography books focus only on the technology behind topography, or a particular application of topography, as opposed to presenting a comprehensive collection of topographic patterns that provide quick, consistent pattern recognition and identification. Drs. Wang and Kugler, along with Drs. Morgan and Boerman, look to fill this void with Atlas and Clinical Reference Guide for Corneal Topography.Atlas and Clinical Reference Guide for Corneal Topography is the first corneal topography book that lends itself to efficient image search and reference for busy clinicians at chair side. Organized into both map-based and disease-based sections, the book allows for quick reference in busy clinical situations. Images come from the commonly used topographers, the Zeiss Atlas and the Oculus Pentacam, but the principles of pattern recognition can be applied to any topographer. Due to the text’s large collection of topographic images and corresponding corneal conditions, Atlas and Clinical Reference Guide for Corneal Topography can be used side by side with the topographer.Designed as both a learning tool for students and a reference for clinicians to use when faced with a challenging topography interpretation, Atlas and Clinical Reference Guide for Corneal Topography will be appreciated by a wide spectrum of eye care professionals. General ophthalmologists, cataract and refractive surgeons, corneal specialists, optometrists, and ophthalmology residents and students will benefit from this invaluable atlas for corneal topography.

Atlas: From the Streets to the Ring: A Son's Struggle to Become a Man

by Peter Alson Teddy Atlas

"Of all the people who have affected by my life and influence the choices I've made, none has been more important than my father."So begins the autobiography of legendary boxing trainer and commentator Teddy Atlas, who grew from the rebellious son of a doctor to a man who embraces, and lives by, his father's values and code.In this gritty, spellbinding tale, Atlas recounts his fascinating life -- as a juvenile delinquent on the streets of Staten Island; as a boxer and Golden Gloves champion under the tutelage of famed trainer Cus D'Amato; as a companion to the dangerous, unpredictable Sammy "the Bull" Gravano, up until the day Gravano turned rat and brought down crime boss John Gotti; and as a trainer of champions and contenders, among them fourteen-year-old Mike Tyson and heavyweight Michael Moorer, whom he led to the crown with a win over Evander Holyfield.Equally engrossing are Teddy Atlas's accounts of training dancer and choreographer Twyla Tharp for her successful comeback at age forty-two; his work with actor Willem Dafoe, preparing him for his role as a concentration camp boxer in the film Triumph of the Spirit; his journey to Poland to choreograph the film's boxing scenes; and his own performance in movies such as Play It to the Bone. In sharing his stories, Atlas reveals the philosophy by which he lives.Like Teddy Atlas -- inimitable, tough, honest, and wise -- this book inspires. It is about so much more than boxing. It is a story of overcoming hardships, of compassion for those in need, of tremendous personal integrity, and of personal and professional triumph.

Atlantis Ek Rahasyamay Dwip: अटलांटिस एक रहस्यमयी द्वीप

by Shivendra Suryavanshi

Atlantic Fever: Lindbergh, His Competitors, and the Race to Cross the Atlantic

by Joe Jackson

For five weeks—from April 14 to May 21, 1927—the world held its breath while fourteen aviators took to the air to capture the $25,000 prize that Raymond Orteig offered to the first man to cross the Atlantic Ocean without stopping.Joe Jackson's Atlantic Fever is about this race, a milestone in American history whose story has never been fully told. Delving into the lives of the big-name competitors—the polar explorer Richard Byrd, the French war hero René Fonck, the millionaire Charles Levine, and the race's eventual winner, the enigmatic Charles Lindbergh—as well as those whose names have been forgotten by history (such as Bernt Balchen, Stanton Wooster, and Clarence Chamberlin), Jackson brings a completely fresh and original perspective to the race to conquer the Atlantic.Atlantic Fever opens for us one of those magical windows onto a moment when the nexus of technology, innovation, character, and spirit led so many contenders from different parts of the world to be on the cusp of the exact same achievement at the exact same time.

Athletic Training Case Scenarios: Domain-Based Situations and Solutions

by Francis Feld Keith Gorse Robert Blanc

Every case that athletic trainers respond to is unique, but by exposing themselves to a variety of scenarios, they can be prepared for almost any situation. Case studies are the easiest way to find this information, but oftentimes, they come in the form of informal anecdotes or only relate to very specific subjects. Athletic Training Case Scenarios: Domain-Based Situations and Solutions is designed to fill this gap by providing a large number of studies from all five of the domains of athletic training. Keith M. Gorse, Francis Feld, and Robert O. Blanc have gathered true-to-life scenarios for each of the five domains of athletic training, resulting in expert advice on the best response to many possible scenarios. These scenarios were shared by the certified athletic trainers who originally responded to them coming from their work in industrial settings, high schools, colleges, professional teams, and sports medicine clinics. Each scenario features the actual case as it was first assessed by the athletic trainer in order to give readers an opportunity to use their own judgment and decide the best course of action before the original athletic trainer’s own response and recommendations are given. Organized by domain, readers will be able to easily find examples of any case they could imagine. Each domain (prevention, evaluation and diagnosis, emergency care, treatment and rehabilitation, and organizational and professional health) has over a dozen scenarios designed to encourage critical thinking. This format gives readers the closest thing to a crash-course by exposing them to a diverse array of cases and situations. Athletic training students and clinicians will appreciate the wide range of cases presented in Athletic Training Case Scenarios: Domain-Based Situations and Solutions, providing them with the strong knowledge base they will need to respond to any situation they may experience themselves.

An Athletic Trainers’ Guide to Sports Nutrition

by Damon Amato

An Athletic Trainer’s Guide to Sports Nutrition fills the void of a subject area that is underrepresented in current athletic trainer curriculums despite its importance in the field. Damon Amato has created a text that can be easily read and understood by health care professionals yet is in-depth enough to create a solid understanding of how the body works, and easy enough to then pass on the information to athletes to help them eat ideally based on their specific sport, goal, and situation. Giving a physiology background is necessary to lay the foundation for understanding why certain recommendations in the text are given; however, only the necessary details are included to focus on what is pertinent for athletic trainers to understand while advising athletes. Some topics covered inside include: Basics of human nutrition Disordered eating and eating disorders in athletes Supplements Eating optimally for injury recovery Nutrient timing Special situations An Athletic Trainer’s Guide to Sports Nutrition gives athletic training clinicians and students the information and tools necessary to aid athletes in maintaining peak performance in nutrition, and fills the void left in the current athletic training curriculum.

The Athletic Trainer's Guide to Differential Diagnosis: A Visual Learning Approach

by Andrew P. Winterstein Sharon Clark

As educators, we strive to teach students to think critically and to commit to a diagnosis, the ability to make that commitment is one of the most difficult steps for clinicians in training. With many possible injuries and conditions, and an equally large number of diagnostic elements, a clear and logical method is needed. The Athletic Trainer’s Guide to Differential Diagnosis: A Visual Learning Approach provides an approach that helps the reader sort through the possibilities and think about the clinical evaluation within a clinical thinking framework using a visual mapping approach. The Athletic Trainer’s Guide to Differential Diagnosis is not designed to be a “how-to” evaluation text. Rather, it is designed to create a framework that allows the reader to think differently about differential diagnoses, access existing knowledge in anatomy and clinical evaluation, and assess information for the purpose of making higher-order clinical decisions. Dr. Andrew P. Winterstein and Sharon V. Clark have organized The Athletic Trainer’s Guide to Differential Diagnosis by body part, as well as by location in the body. The reader will be able to examine the possible diagnoses by location and approach the evaluation in a more focused and organized fashion. This method of evaluation also allows the reader the opportunity to apply evidence-based principles to the clinical evaluation process. The Athletic Trainer’s Guide to Differential Diagnosis takes a visual learning approach with an emphasis on diagrams, tables, and boxes to illustrate the visual evaluation framework. In addition, each chapter offers a clinical case to provide a springboard for approaching the differential diagnosis process. The Athletic Trainer’s Guide to Differential Diagnosis: A Visual Learning Approach will enhance the athletic training student and clinician’s critical thinking skills, as well as be an excellent resource for self-assessment and preparation for certification.

Athene Palace: Hitler's "New Order" Comes to Rumania

by R.G. Waldeck

On the day that Paris fell to the Nazis, R. G. Waldeck was checking into the swankiest hotel in Bucharest, the Athene Palace. A cosmopolitan center during the war, the hotel was populated by Italian and German oilmen hoping to secure new business opportunities in Romania, international spies cloaked in fake identities, and Nazi officers whom Waldeck discovered to be intelligent but utterly bloodless. A German Jew and a reporter for Newsweek, Waldeck became a close observer of the Nazi invasion. As King Carol first tried to placate the Nazis, then abdicated the throne in favor of his son, Waldeck was dressing for dinners with diplomats and cozying up to Nazi officers to get insight and information. From her unique vantage, she watched as Romania, a country with a pro-totalitarian elite and a deep strain of anti-Semitism, suffered civil unrest, a German invasion, and an earthquake, before turning against the Nazis. A striking combination of social intimacy and disinterest political analysis, Athene Palace evokes the elegance and excitement of the dynamic international community in Bucharest before the world had comes to grips with the horrors of war and genocide. Waldeck’s account strikingly presents the finely wrought surface of dinner parties, polite discourse, and charisma, while recognizing the undercurrents of violence and greed that ran through the denizens of Athene Palace.

At the Top of the Grand Staircase: The Late Cretaceous of Southern Utah (Life of the Past)

by Alan L. Titus and Mark A. Loewen

The Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument is the location of one of the best-known terrestrial records for the late Cretaceous. Prior fieldwork confirmed the richness of the area, but a major effort begun in the new century has documented over 2,000 new vertebrate fossil sites, provided new radiometric dates, and identified five new genera of ceratopsids, two new species of hadrosaur, a probable new genus of hypsilophodontid, new pachycephalosaurs and ankylosaurs, several kinds of theropods (including a new genus of oviraptor and a new tyrannosaur), plus the most complete specimen of a Late Cretaceous therizinosaur ever collected from North America, and much more. The research documented in this book is rewriting our understanding of Late Cretaceous paleobiogeography and dinosaur phyletics. At the Top of the Grand Staircase: The Late Cretaceous of Southern Utah is a major stepping stone toward a total synthesis of the ecology and evolution of the Late Cretaceous ecosystems of western North America.

At the End of Property: Patents, Plants and the Crisis of Propertization

by Veit Braun

Recent decades have witnessed the creation of new types of property systems, ranging from data ownership to national control over genetic resources. This trend has significant implications for wealth distribution and our understanding of who can own what. This book explores the idea of ownership in the realm of plant breeding, revealing how plants have been legally and materially transformed into property. It highlights the controversial aspects of turning seeds, plants and genes into property and how this endangers the viability of the seed industry. Examining ownership not simply as a legal concept, but as a bundle of laws, practices and technologies, this is a valuable contribution that will interest scholars of intellectual property studies, the anthropology of markets, science and technology studies and related fields.

At Lady Molly's: Book 4 Of A Dance To The Music Of Time (A Dance of Music and Time)

by Anthony Powell

Anthony Powell’s universally acclaimed epic A Dance to the Music of Time offers a matchless panorama of twentieth-century London. Now, for the first time in decades, readers in the United States can read the books of Dance as they were originally published—as twelve individual novels—but with a twenty-first-century twist: they’re available only as e-books. As the fourth book, At Lady Molly’s (1957), opens, the heady pleasures of the 1920s have begun to give way to the austerity and worries of the 1930s. Even so, the whirl of London life continues: friends commit to causes and to spouses, confess adulteries, and fall victim to dissipation and disillusion. As Nick moves ever more comfortably in the worlds of art, culture, and society, Powell’s palette broadens: old friends make appearances, but new ones take places on the stage as well—including Isobel Tolland, whom Nick knows at first sight he’s destined to marry. "Anthony Powell is the best living English novelist by far. His admirers are addicts, let us face it, held in thrall by a magician."--ChicagoTribune "A book which creates a world and explores it in depth, which ponders changing relationships and values, which creates brilliantly living and diverse characters and then watches them grow and change in their milieu. . . . Powell's world is as large and as complex as Proust's."--Elizabeth Janeway, New YorkTimes "One of the most important works of fiction since the Second World War. . . . The novel looked, as it began, something like a comedy of manners; then, for a while, like a tragedy of manners; now like a vastly entertaining, deeply melancholy, yet somehow courageous statement about human experience."--Naomi Bliven, New Yorker“The most brilliant and penetrating novelist we have.”--Kingsley Amis
