Enough

by Cassidy Hutchinson

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER Cassidy Hutchinson&’s desk was mere steps from the most controversial president in recent American history. Now, she provides a riveting account of her extraordinary experiences as an idealistic young woman thrust into the middle of a national crisis, where she risked everything to tell the truth about some of the most powerful people in Washington. Ever since a childhood visit to Washington, DC, Cassidy Hutchinson aspired to serve her country in government. Raised in a working-class family with a military background, she was the first in her immediate family to graduate from college. Despite having no ties to Washington, Hutchinson landed a vital position at the center of the Trump White House. Her life took a dramatic turn on January 6th, 2021, when, at twenty-four, she found herself in one of the most extraordinary and unprecedented calamities in modern political history. Hutchinson was faced with a choice between loyalty to the Trump administration or loyalty to the country by revealing what she saw and heard in the attempt to overthrow a democratic election. She bravely came forward to become the pivotal witness in the House January 6 investigations, as her testimony transfixed and stunned the nation. In her memoir, Hutchinson reveals the struggle between the pressures she confronted to toe the party line and the demands of the oath she swore to defend American democracy. Enough reaches far beyond the typical insider political account. It&’s the saga of a woman whose fierce determination helped her overcome childhood challenges to get her dream job, only to face a crisis of conscience—one that more senior White House aides tried to evade—and, in the process, find her voice and herself. This is a portrait of how the courage of one person can change the course of history.

Justifying Next Stage Capitalism: Exploring a Hopeful Future (Ethical Economy #68)

by Michel Dion Moses L. Pava

This book explores emerging justifications of capitalism based on the views of academics from around the world in business. The traditional justification for capitalism has been that it is the one system that produces the most wealth with the least cost for the most people. While this justification no longer has the taken-for-granted status it once enjoyed, it remains the dominant and mainstream argument in favor of capitalism, especially in the United States. Despite capitalism’s production of human wealth, it is implicated by trends such as income and wealth inequalities, climate change caused by the burning of fossil fuels and racism, sexism and other forms of discrimination. This volume asserts that in this age of complexity, inequality, and ecological instability, capitalism’s future depends on our ability to broaden the justifications for it to include a much more elaborate list of values beyond wealth and efficiency. It does so without claiming tologically or empirically prove that capitalism is the best of all possible economic systems, but rather to explore a new and hopeful future for the system; Next stage capitalism. Written by an international group of scholars from various disciplines, this book is of great interest to those who work in philosophy, sociology, political science, history and theology and religious studies.

Quantum Optics of Light Scattering (Springer Series in Optical Sciences #249)

by Alexey P. Vinogradov Alexander A. Lisyansky Evgeny S. Andrianov Vladislav Yu. Shishkov

This book presents a quantum framework for understanding inelastic light scattering which is consistent with the classical descriptions of Raman phenomena and Rayleigh scattering, thus creating a unified theoretical picture of light scattering. The Raman effect was discovered in 1928 and has since proved to be one of the most powerful tools to study the molecular structure of gases, liquids, and crystals. The subsequent development of new scientific disciplines such as nonlinear optics, quantum optics, plasmonics, metamaterials, and the theory of open quantum systems has changed our views on the nature of Rayleigh and Raman scattering. Today, there are many excellent books on the theory and applications of light scattering, but a consistent description of light scattering from a unified viewpoint is missing. The authors’ approach has the power to re-derive the results of both classical and quantum approaches while also addressing many questions that are scattered acrossthe research literature: Why is Rayleigh scattering coherent while Raman scattering is not, although both phenomena are caused by the incidence of a coherent wave? Why are coherent Stokes and coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering caused by two coherent incident waves both always coherent? This book answers these questions and more, and explains state-of-the-art experimental results with a first-principles approach that avoids phenomenological arguments. Many of the results presented are appearing in book form for the first time, making this book especially useful for young researchers entering the field. The book reviews basic concepts of quantum mechanics and quantum optics and comes equipped with problems and solutions to develop understanding of the key mathematical techniques. The rigorous approach presented in the book is elegant and readily grasped, and will therefore prove useful to both theorists and experimentalists at the graduate level and above, as well as engineers who useRaman scattering methods in their work.

Icons of the Alphabet: Letter Names, Phonetic Notation and the Phonology and Orthography of English

by Reese M. Heitner

This book examines the names by which we refer to the letters of the English alphabet, arguing that these letter names provide unrivalled insights into the phonological structure of English, present and past, as well as the many peculiarities of English pronunciation and spelling. Classified either as contronyms, ambinyms or tautonyms, the modern phonological profiles of our ancient Semitic letter names reveal what is unique to English, what is fundamental to language and how letter names emerge as the semiotic product of interchanging languages combined with intralanguage change. This volume promises a much more extensive and deeper linguistic treatment of English letter names than has previously been attempted. It will be of particular interest to students and scholars of historical linguistics, phonology and orthography, the history of English, semiotics, and language and literacy teaching.

Design for Change: Designing Evidence-Based Teacher Preparation Programs

by Alan Bain

This book focuses on enhancing teacher education quality by making evidence- informed decisions about policy, assessing quality, establishing effective strategies, and innovating teacher preparation programs. It advocates for the importance of rigorous program design and evaluation as the basis for shaping policy directions and claiming program effectiveness. The book introduces "Design for Change" (DfC), a 20-year-long collaborative effort by a group of teacher educators dedicated to improving their practices. DfC is divided into two parts: Design for Change-Teams and Process (DfC-TaP) and Design for Change-Programs and Courses (DfC-PaC). DfC-TaP explores how to form and sustain a design team of academics, emphasizing the collaborative process's value in program development. DfC-PaC delves into applying practical theory to curriculum design, mapping programs to standards, creating meaningful learning and assessment tasks, and leveraging technology. The latterincludes a chapter on software for teacher preparation program design. The book's ultimate goal is to offer a versatile framework for designing teacher education programs. The book employs evidence from longitudinal research to present generalizable concepts and structures for program developers and designers. By doing so, the book aims to contribute to the field by providing a research-based guide for building teacher education programs that enhance the overall educational experience for both faculty and students.
