Data-driven Modelling and Scientific Machine Learning in Continuum Physics (Interdisciplinary Applied Mathematics #60)

It develops the foundations and details a number of scientific machine learning approaches to enrich current computational models of continuum physics, or to use the data generated by these models to infer more information on these problems. The perspective presented here is drawn from recent research by the author and collaborators. Applications drawn from the physics of materials or from biophysics illustrate each topic. Some elements of the theoretical background in continuum physics that are essential to address these applications are developed first. These chapters focus on nonlinear elasticity and mass transport, with particular attention directed at descriptions of phase separation. This is followed by a brief treatment of the finite element method, since it is the most widely used approach to solve coupled partial differential equations in continuum physics. With these foundations established, the treatment proceeds to a number of recent developments in data-driven methods and scientific machine learning in the context of the continuum physics of materials and biosystems. This part of the monograph begins by addressing numerical homogenization of microstructural response using feed-forward as well as convolutional neural networks. Next is surrogate optimization using multifidelity learning for problems of phase evolution. Graph theory bears many equivalences to partial differential equations in its properties of representation and avenues for analysis as well as reduced-order descriptions--all ideas that offer fruitful opportunities for exploration. Neural networks, by their capacity for representation of high-dimensional functions, are powerful for scale bridging in physics--an idea on which we present a particular perspective in the context of alloys. One of the most compelling ideas in scientific machine learning is the identification of governing equations from dynamical data--another topic that we explore from the viewpoint of partial differential equations encoding mechanisms. This is followed by an examination of approaches to replace traditional, discretization-based solvers of partial differential equations with deterministic and probabilistic neural networks that generalize across boundary value problems. The monograph closes with a brief outlook on current emerging ideas in scientific machine learning.

Gendered Vulnerabilities and Violence in Forced Migration: The Rohingya from Myanmar
by Mohammad Musfequs SalehinThis open access book investigates the gendered violence and vulnerabilities experienced by Rohingya men and women, drawing on qualitative data from refugee camps in Bangladesh. It shows that in Myanmar, men suffered torture and sexual violence, while women experienced physical, mental and sexual violence, legitimized by patriarchal norms. Sexual violence was wielded as a weapon to coerce their exodus from Myanmar and to disrupt the essential facets of Rohingya femininity, motherhood, and reproductive capabilities. Structural, cultural and symbolic violence affected the Rohingya differently across gender lines. A gendered threat narrative and othering cast women as ‘ugly’ and reproductive threats while men are framed as potential threats to national security and Buddhist nationalism. In Bangladesh, gendered othering continued, with Rohingya men seen as security threats and women as vulnerable victims. This book contributes to peace and conflict studies, gender studies, and migration and refugee studies, by analysing gendered violence.

Drawing on long-term research spanning fifteen years, Barua presents a unique ethnography attentive to the lives of both people and elephants amid tea plantations in the Indian state of Assam. In the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, nearly three million people were brought in to Assam’s plantations to work under conditions of indenture. Plantations dramatically altered the region’s landscape, plundered resources, and created fraught worlds for elephants and people. Their extractive logics and colonial legacies prevail as durations, forging the ambit of infrastructures, labor, habitability, and conservation in the present. And yet, as the perspectives of the Adivasi plantation worker community and lifeworlds of elephants show, possibilities for enacting a decolonial imaginary of landscape remain present amid immiseration. From the margins of the Global South, Barua offers an alternative grammar for articulating environmental change. In so doing, he prompts a rethinking of multispecies ecologies and how they are structured by colonialism and race.

The unseen and largely unacknowledged contributions of such accomplices exceed those performed by a typical audience because they share in the responsibility for producing artworks that entail potential ethical or legal transgressions. Stutterheim analyzes the art of Chris Burden, Hannah Wilke, Martin Kippenberger, and Lorraine O’Grady, showing how each cannily developed strategies of shared culpability that evoked questions about the accomplice’s various rights and roles. In this way, Stutterheim argues that the artist’s authority is not sovereign, total, or exclusive but, rather, fluid and relational. By examining the development of an alternative model of participatory art that relies on a network of accomplices, Stutterheim radically revises current understandings of artistic agency, aesthetic property, and acknowledged authorship.
