The Lacanian Teacher: Education, Pedagogy and Enjoyment (The Palgrave Lacan Series)
by Nick Peim Nick StockWhat does it mean to be a Lacanian teacher? This book responds through three avenues: what Lacan had to say about teaching, how Lacan taught his seminars, and what his theoretical ideas might have to say about teaching in general. The authors propose a rethinking of the teacher, the relationship between teacher and their fantasmatic educational landscape, a deconstruction of pedagogy, and a consideration of the teacher's enjoyment. An original understanding of the ontological dimension of education is proposed, along with an account of the implications this has for the thinking and being of a teacher. This book represents a valuable addition to the emerging body of Lacanian critical work in education and offers fresh insights for practitioners and scholars in the fields of education and psychoanalysis.
Divine Control, Human Contingencies and the Problem of Evil (Palgrave Frontiers in Philosophy of Religion)
by Aku Stephen AntombikumsThis book investigates whether open theism provides a clear and viable response to the problem of evil. To better understand open theism, classical theism, Molinism and process theism are also considered. Responses to the problem of evil have traditionally revolved around God's goodness, justice and power. By contrast, this book argues that in order to resolve or better understand the tension between divine sovereignty and human freedom, the attributes of God have to be understood as a set. Starting from this basis, the book examines divine immutability, eternity, aseity, omniscience, omnipotence, love, and creation in order to make sense of the problem of evil. The nature of human freedom is also explored. Divine Control, Human Contingencies and the Problem of Evil is essential reading for all scholars and researchers of the philosophy of religion especially those focusing on the problem of evil.
Dinaric Perspectives on PIRLS 2021: Prerequisites and Conditions for Teaching and Learning to Read (IEA Research for Education #17)
by Paulína Koršňáková Sabine Meinck Žaneta DžumhurThis open access book presents insights into the current state of reading literacy in the Dinaric region, namely the education systems in Albania, Croatia, Kosovo[1], Montenegro, North Macedonia, Serbia, and Slovenia. A collection of analyses reveals factors influencing this key capacity of young pupils. Using data from IEA&’s Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS) 2021, the book explores teaching and learning reading literacy at the end of primary school (Grade 4) through multiple lenses, such as national reading curricula and textbooks, home and school resources for learning, student wellbeing, teacher education, instructions, and digital assessments. Since the administration of PIRLS 2021 coincided with the Covid-19 pandemic, the book also provides valuable insights into remote teaching and learning and other disruptions caused by the pandemic. Guardrails: Guiding Human Decisions in the Age of AI
by Viktor Mayer-Schönberger Urs GasserHow society can shape individual actions in times of uncertaintyWhen we make decisions, our thinking is informed by societal norms, &“guardrails&” that guide our decisions, like the laws and rules that govern us. But what are good guardrails in today&’s world of overwhelming information flows and increasingly powerful technologies, such as artificial intelligence? Based on the latest insights from the cognitive sciences, economics, and public policy, Guardrails offers a novel approach to shaping decisions by embracing human agency in its social context. In this visionary book, Urs Gasser and Viktor Mayer-Schönberger show how the quick embrace of technological solutions can lead to results we don&’t always want, and they explain how society itself can provide guardrails more suited to the digital age, ones that empower individual choice while accounting for the social good, encourage flexibility in the face of changing circumstances, and ultimately help us to make better decisions as we tackle the most daunting problems of our times, such as global injustice and climate change.Whether we change jobs, buy a house, or quit smoking, thousands of decisions large and small shape our daily lives. Decisions drive our economies, seal the fate of democracies, create war or peace, and affect the well-being of our planet. Guardrails challenges the notion that technology should step in where our own decision making fails, laying out a surprisingly human-centered set of principles that can create new spaces for better decisions and a more innovative and prosperous society.

The Power Trap: How Leadership Changes People, and What to Do About It
by Nik KinleyWe have an entirely messed-up relationship with power. It is something that almost everyone wants, that promises much and can help us achieve great things. Yet power isn't something we openly talk about or understand, and that&’s a problem. While power is an essential part of every leadership role, it is also a difficult and sometimes toxic partner that changes everyone who holds it. And often, in ways that make being a good leader much harder. Approached carefully, however, the worst of power's negative effects can be avoided and balanced by its positives. This book shows you how. It reveals what power does to people, and how it both affects them as leaders and the people they lead. And it shows how, in turn, leaders can affect the positions of power they hold, too. Incorporating the latest neuroscience, the book offers clear lessons for how to successfully manage power. For leaders, it provides practical advice on how to survive having power, avoiding its worst effects. For organisations and institutions, it is about how to ensure that the people who have power are equipped and supported to thrive with it. And for us all, as people who choose and follow leaders, it is about how we can identify those most at risk of falling to power's dark side. Ultimately, this book provides a plan for how we can have a healthier relationship with power, so that as individuals we can be better leaders, and as organisations and societies we can be better led.
