Shaping a DesignedUp Organisation: The Journey to Design Maturity

by Emma Carter

“Emma Carter reveals how organizations can shift from tech-centric to design-led, creating meaningful experiences. Through case studies and practical frameworks, she demonstrates how scaling design isn’t about adding more designers but transforming how organizations think and operate. This essential guide helps leaders embed design thinking at every level, turning transformation into a continuous evolution. In Shaping a DesignedUp Organisation Emma Carter distills the essence of digital transformation: true progress lies in simplifying through design thinking, not adding complexity. Like a conductor harmonizing an orchestra, she shows how tech and design can work together to serve human needs. More than a book on shaping and scaling design, this is a vision for a more powerful, humane digital future—essential for those bridging technology and human experience.”—John Maeda, VP Engineering, Head of Computational Design / AI Platform, MicrosoftThe learnings gained from Shaping a DesignedUp Organisation will not only give design leaders a seat at the table, it’ll make them the smartest person at the table - creating influence, driving conversations for growth, and ultimately shaping their company into a ‘design mature’ organisation. But that’s not to say this book is strictly for design leaders. Tech leaders, product leaders and business leaders will come to see how business performance and design are intrinsically linked. You’ll gain intimate insights from leaders at world-leading organisations like Spotify, Disney, Airbnb, Monzo and frog and learn about a variety of frameworks and practical approaches to help your organisation reach design maturity with a human focus. And if you’re in an organisation not convinced by the value of design, you’ll learn how to translate the benefits of embedding design at every touchpoint in a way that’s meaningful, valuable and profitable to various stakeholders, creating an army of design advocates to future proof your organisation…and decrease its risk of becoming a dinosaur.

Major Blunders of The Second World War: New Insights into Mistakes and their Consequences

by Andrew Sangster

Blunders and their Consequences: Examining Errors of the Second World WarWar is rife with mistakes, but the consequences can be catastrophic when those errors escalate to blunders caused by carelessness or ignorance. In the Second World War context, these blunders often led to devastating loss of life, strategic failures, and enduring controversies. This book delves into such incidents, from obscure mishaps to high-profile missteps. Among the tales are the shocking story of an American destroyer accidentally firing a live torpedo at a battleship carrying President Roosevelt, and a German aircraft crash-landing in neutral territory with critical invasion plans onboard. Overconfidence played a key role in many tragedies, such as a Luftwaffe raid that struck American gas shells, causing widespread casualties, and the Dieppe raid, which became a planning disaster. Some incidents remain fiercely debated. The British sinking of the French fleet continues to raise questions about necessity versus error, while King Edward VIII&’s alleged treachery may stem more from naivety than intent. The conviction of Admiral Karl Dönitz at Nuremberg also sparks controversy, as his U-boat tactics mirrored Allied strategies. Through vivid storytelling and detailed analysis, this book exposes the human error behind critical wartime decisions, from tactical misjudgments to intelligence failures. It examines the hidden and often overlooked blunders that shaped the course of WWII, offering a fresh perspective on the complexities of war and the fragile nature of leadership under pressure.

Institutional Acceleration: The Consequences of Technological Change in a Digital Economy (Elements in Evolutionary Economics)

by Jason Potts Chris Berg Darcy W. Allen

This Element develops a theory of institutional acceleration to explain the transformation to a digital economy through a cluster of frontier technologies: artificial intelligence, blockchain, quantum computing, cryptography, and low-earth orbit infrastructure. Unlike previous technological revolutions, these technologies transform not how we organise things, but how we coordinate economic activity. The authors' supertransition thesis explains why these digital technologies shouldn't be understood in isolation, but rather should be understood in how they combine to create new institutional possibilities, leading to more open, complex, and global economic systems. Drawing on evolutionary economics and institutional theory, this Element shows how this evolutionary process is reshaping our institutional economic architecture. Ultimately, institutional acceleration drives greater computation and knowledge into our economic systems.

The Metaphysics of Divine Participation (Elements In the History of Philosophy and Theology in the West)

by Alexander J. Hampton

Participation has been central to the story of Western philosophy and theology for at least two millennia. It has been employed to conceptualise the relationship between God and creation, between universals and particulars, and between the One and the many. This Element approaches the concept systematically to acquire an appreciation of its breadth and depth under four fundamental themes: creation and the divine ideas, incarnation and salvation, being and multiplicity, and the human activities of naming, knowing and making. In doing so it examines some of the key thinkers in the participatory tradition, including Augustine, Irenaeus, Aquinas and Nicholas of Cusa. Readers will be introduced to the key contours and manifestations of participatory metaphysics, and its role in Christianity's self-articulation. Together, these considerations will demonstrate how the metaphysics of participation has shaped the Christian tradition.

What Do We Know and What Should We Do About Abolishing Prisons? (What Do We Know and What Should We Do About:)

by Joe Sim

This book challenges the myths and misrepresentations that justify the existence of prisons. It traces the history and failure of prison reform over two centuries, addresses a number of key, contemporary issues and argues for the abolition of prisons. It explores: The problem with liberal reformism. The myths around crime, the prison population and prison regimes. People in prison and the harms they experience. The relationship between prisons, punishment and structural inequality. The case for abolishing prisons. Aimed at students, researchers, grassroots organisations, prisoners’ rights activists, policy makers and anyone interested in social justice, its conclusion is clear; there needs to be fundamental and meaningful change. Prisons, the criminal injustice system and structural inequalities need to be radically transformed and abolished if social justice is to be achieved. Written by leading social scientists, the What Do We Know and What Should We Do About...? series offers concise, up-to-date overviews of issues often oversimplified, misrepresented or misunderstood and shows you how to enact change. "Short, sharp and compelling." - Alex Preston, The Observer "If you want to learn a lot about what matters most, in as short a time as possible, this is the series for you."- Danny Dorling, 1971 Professor of Geography, University of Oxford

Le Moulin-à-Fleur de Sudbury: Quartier ouvrier, territoire canadien-français (Amérique française)

by Serge Dupuis M. Normand Carrey

by Christina Clark-Kazak Stéphanie Garneau Leila Benhadjoudja

Crise sanitaire, crise migratoire, crise humanitaire, crise climatique…

Hidden Scars: From Crime Scenes to Crisis, The Price of Service

by Justyn Backhouse

Unmasking the Journey from Duty to Darkness to HealingIn Hidden Scars, former NSW Police Officer Justyn Backhouse shares an unflinching memoir of life on the front lines, revealing the harrowing experiences and unseen toll of a 25-year policing career. Each experience erodes the safety of youth, replacing it with the stark realities of policing. As PTSD silently takes root, Justyn confronts the relentless impact of trauma on his work, family, and sense of self. He exposes private battles—panic attacks, the emotional toll on his loved ones, and the struggle to cope with the stress infiltrating every part of his life. Amidst the bleakness, his journey toward recovery unfolds, revealing the support and resilience he draws on to rebuild his life and purpose. Through raw, compelling storytelling, Hidden Scars offers a window into the harsh realities of police work and a powerful message of healing and hope, shining a light on the courage it takes to reclaim oneself from the shadows of trauma.

Doing Democracy in "Third Places": Youth Citizenship Education

by Stéphanie Gaudet Caroline Caron Sophie Théwissen-LeBlanc

Resulting from a collaborative approach, Doing Democracy in "Third Places" presents the results of multi-site ethnographic research in seven Quebec civil society organizations. It reports on observations, analyses and comparisons of a diversity of innovative citizenship education practices aimed at young people in these “third places”, i.e. socialization spaces different from school and family.Focusing on the presentation of case studies, the book reveals the diversity of formative experiences offered to young Quebecers. The pooling of case analyses leads to a fruitful reflection on education for democratic citizenship through a plurality of citizen experimentation practices rooted in the defense of children’s rights, feminist social action, the community movement, alterglobalism and municipal and school public action. With its original conceptual vocabulary and qualitative methodological approach, this book will help to push back the geolinguistic and disciplinary boundaries that often separate research currents closely or remotely related to the social and political engagement and participation of young people. Written in an accessible style, it is aimed at a wide audience, including youth organization staff, graduate students, the youth policy sector and anyone interested in the issues surrounding youth citizenship in the 21st century.

The Care Dividend: Why and How Countries Should Invest in Long-Term Care (European Observatory on Health Systems and Policies)

by Ludovico Carrino Jonathan Cylus George Wharton Stefania Illinica Manfred Huber Sarah Louise Barber

Long-term care often falls by the wayside in national policy dialogues. As populations age around the world and the prevalence of chronic conditions increases, greater numbers of people will need care and support, putting added pressures on acute-care facilities, communities, and families, among others. This increase in demand for long-term care raises questions about the capacity of governments to provide access to needed care, how these services will be properly resourced and who should receive these benefits. The Care Dividend provides a roadmap for investing in long-term care systems. It argues for increased public investment in high-quality, universally accessible long-term care and explains why these systems benefit everyone: households, health systems, economies, and societies. Bringing together a team of academics and policy experts from around the world, this book explains why and how governments can, and should, take action. This title is also available as Open Access on Cambridge Core.
