by Ali AlmannaThis is a coursebook designed for students of translation, which will also benefit professional translators as it covers key issues in contemporary legal translation. The book is divided into two main parts. The first, theoretical part, explores issues such as types of legal texts, readership, communicative purpose, global and local strategies, and modality in addition to analysing the common features of legal discourse in both languages, be they lexical, syntactic, or textual. The second, practical part, discusses issues such as legal rights, contractual obligations, torts, crimes, people and law. It focuses on all types of legal texts, regardless of their classification and examines legislative texts, which have acquired a certain degree of notoriety rarely equalled by any other variety of English.
Afrocentrism as Diplomatic Practice: The Abuja-Pretoria Axis
by Oluwaseun TellaThis book&’s major contribution is deploying the conceptual framework of Afrocentrism, which underscores Nigeria and South Africa&’s Afrocentric posture in the pursuit of their foreign policy objectives, both bilaterally and multilaterally. Indeed, Afrocentrism presents an important framework for understanding Nigeria-South Africa relations and the regional powers&’ relations with other states in Africa and beyond. The salience of Afrocentrism stems from the fact that both states see Africa as the centre-piece of their foreign policies. Additionally, this book delves into dimensions that surpass previous studies by exploring key aspects such as space diplomacy and diaspora diplomacy, which are critical to the bilateral and multilateral relations of the two states. It further introduces the concept of de-Afrocentrism into international relations discourse.

Buzz Me In: Inside the Record Plant Studios
by David Goggin Martin PorterThe inside story of Record Plant studios—the real "Hotel California"—that reveals how the greatest music of the seventies was recorded and why the artists checked out but rarely left. In the seventies, Record Plant studios was at the heart of the largest boom in record production in music history. With studios in New York, Los Angeles, and Sausalito, and a fleet of remote recording trucks, Record Plant was everywhere there was music. In 1976 alone, three #1 albums—Stevie Wonder's Songs In The Key Of Life, the Eagles' Hotel California, and Fleetwood Mac's Rumours—were all recorded in Record Plant studios. Based on the memoirs and archives of studio cofounder Chris Stone, and interviews with over one hundred studio employees, music producers, and recording artists, Buzz Me In narrates this previously untold story of classic rock 'n' roll as the authors received it from industry insiders working behind the iconic studio’s locked doors, alongside the great rock stars of the twentieth century. This fast-paced and engrossing book, written by two seasoned music journalists, tells the incredible story of the evolution of Record Plant Studios, tape by tape, and of the hits that were manufactured there. Starting on New York's West Side in 1968 with the recording of Jimi Hendrix’s Electric Ladyland, Record Plant expanded to LA, where Stevie Wonder produced his greatest hits, and then on to Sausalito where Sly Stone, Bob Marley, and Fleetwood Mac encamped; John Lennon made New York his post-Beatles home, and the Eagles conceived Hotel California while working in LA. Each location showcased the founders' proven formula of combining state-of-the-art audio, fantasy bedrooms, and group Jacuzzis, with sex, drugs, and celebrity jams.
New Deal Art (World of Art)
by John P. MurphyA vibrant and insightful account of the diverse artists and activists who made up the New Deal art programs and the influential legacy of the artwork they left behind. What role should the arts play in a democracy? At the height of the Great Depression, President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal turned crisis into opportunity. Through unprecedented federal funding for the arts, the New Deal launched the careers of artists such as Philip Guston, Dorothea Lange, Jacob Lawrence, Alice Neel, Jackson Pollock, and Mark Rothko. They belonged to the era’s bold vision of cultural democracy: art by the people, for the people. Brimming with vivid images and stories, New Deal Art offers a dynamic survey of this transformative period. The book highlights a diverse generation of artists who challenged dominant narratives of American history and identity. Through state-sponsored murals, paintings, sculptures, photographs, prints, and posters, these artists redefined the role of art in society. They formed the first Artists’ Union and fought fascism through collective action. They reimagined art as a public good rather than a private luxury. New Deal Art confronts issues relevant today: freedom and censorship, race and representation, art and activism, politics and propaganda. In an era of dwindling public arts funding, the New Deal’s goal of broadening access to art and culture remains as urgent as ever.

The Italian Crusade to Germany in 1546: Pope Paul III's Campaign Against the Lutherans
by Petr VorelThis book explores a significant historical event in sixteenth-century European history. The Italian crusade against the German Lutherans in 1546 was, for many reasons, the catalyst for the military phase of the Lutheran opposition in Germany's clash with Emperor Charles V (1546-1555). Contributing to literature which has generally interpreted the conflict between Charles V and the Roman-German Empire as an internal German affair, this book highlights the military involvement and participation of Pope Paul III in the initial phase of the so-called Schmalkaldic War, which took place from 1546-1547. Rather than the papal army acting peripherally through 'auxiliary military contingents' as it had done in previous years, the author argues that the Pope was directly involved in the war, sending a large army from Rome to suppress the heretical movement. Outlining the technical advance of the papal army while still on Italian territory, its campaign across the Alps into Germany, and its military activities in the early stages of the war, this book provides a new perspective on the diplomatic negotiations that led to the imperial-papal alliance in 1546. It sheds light on the development of the crusade and its eventual failure, illustrating the worsening relationship between the Pope and the Emperor, and its influence on subsequent political development.
