Netflix: A Creative Approach to Culture and Agility
by Allison M. Ciechanover Jeff Huizinga Ranjay GulatiBy 2018, Netflix had been credited for revolutionizing how viewers consumed entertainment-shifting from ad-fueled linear network programming to a highly personalized, on-demand, all-you-can-consume, ad-free model. The company was riding a long wave of revenue and subscriber growth as it expanded internationally and into original production. From its earliest days, Netflix leadership had fostered a workplace characterized by such values as excellence, maturity, transparency, accountability, candor, and autonomy. The Culture Deck, later dubbed the Culture Memo, documented how Netflix's culture had evolved and enabled the organization to repeatedly innovate, disrupt, and pivot. The case examines the company's history and delves into ways leadership continues to nurture its unique culture through an emphasis on concepts such as "freedom and responsibility," "context, not control," and "highly aligned, loosely coupled." The case allows students to assess CEO Reed Hastings' view that the culture is capable of further scaling even as headcount surges and the company continues its expansion into new geographies and even more content production.

Forgotten Streams in the History of 19th-Century German Psychology: Volume 2: Late Idealist, Cultural, and Phenomenological Psychologies (Theory and History in the Human and Social Sciences)
by Carlos Cornejo Cristián Hernández MaturanaThe 19th century was a defining era for psychology, rich with an intellectual diversity that shaped modern thought but which remains largely overlooked. The roots of 20th century thought can be traced to the 19th century, when a mechanical worldview took hold, society grew increasingly secular, modern urban metropolises emerged, and evolutionist ideas reshaped the understanding of nature’s developmental principles. Throughout this century, the natural sciences extended beyond their traditional limits, influencing and reshaping the human, moral, and social sciences, among which psychology was especially impacted, as this transformation sparked profound debates on the very possibility of a science of the soul. Forgotten Streams in the History of 19th-Century German Psychology recovers the vibrant roots of psychology in empiricism, romanticism, idealism, phenomenology, among other streams of thought that explored consciousness, the soul, and the self before experimental psychology took center stage. Unlike the standard view, this book invites readers to reconsider psychology’s history, revealing a complex landscape that questions the simplistic story of a linear path toward empiricism. Through profiles of significant yet forgotten thinkers, this work uncovers how their ideas contributed to discussions of the unconscious, mind-body duality, and inner experience. Written by leading scholars, each chapter offers a unique window into an intellectual movement that continues to influence debates in psychology, philosophy, and beyond. Essential for historians, psychologists, and anyone curious about psychology’s deeper origins, Forgotten Streams is an indispensable reference that fills an important gap, enriching our understanding of psychology’s complex and multifaceted development.
Single Market 2.0: Harnessing the Innovation Power of the European Green Deal (Contributions to Economics)
by Marina RangaThis book examines the transformative power of the innovation processes set in motion by the European Green Deal and their impact on the EU Single Market. The book is structured into two parts: Part I examines the European Green Deal’s origins, drivers, and structure, highlighting its novel features and the holistic integration of sustainability across all EU policies. It sheds light on the history and evolution of EU environmental policies, tracing their development from the European Economic Community to the ambitious European Green Deal launched in December 2019. This part argues that the European Green Deal was the result of progressive integration of EU environmental objectives into a comprehensive regulatory body that has evolved organically at various institutional levels since the 1970s, and was galvanised by a nexus of scientific, societal, policy and political drivers that converged before December 2019, urging the adoption of a strategic and accelerated response to pressing climate challenges. Part II offers an original perspective on the EU Single Market from an ‘innovation systems’ perspective, centred on the quintessential structural element of the Single Market – the industrial ecosystem. Green Deal-related projects in the EU's Horizon 2020 and Horizon Europe innovation programmes triggered significant transformations in the Single Market’s knowledge, technology and skills base, paving the way to a "Single Market 2.0". However, while progress is promising, challenges remain. For full economic benefits and long-term success, the technologies developed in this context need to increase their market readiness levels and overcome the difficulties arising from high implementation costs, structural disparities among the Member States, social acceptance, and the insufficient synergies between industrial, competitiveness and innovation policies. These synergies, in particular, are crucial in the EU's rapidly evolving technological landscape and can become the ‘North Star’ guiding the Single Market’s journey on its road to the future. This book provides valuable insights for policymakers, academic scholars and researchers, policy analysts and practitioners interested in the European Green Deal dynamics and a more competitive Europe.

Readers are encouraged to reflect on their own role in making counselling and psychotherapy more accessible, especially for marginalised communities. The book challenges the language that often stems from a colonial mindset, focusing instead on the counsellor’s critical reflection and the ability to approach issues of equity, justice, and inclusion thoughtfully as core to the work. It explores Eurocentric ideas about colonisation, binary thinking, and "othering" through the diverse perspectives of each chapter's authors. Each chapter tackles an aspect of counselling practice that will be reframed offering a more inclusive and culturally responsive approach. These practices will draw on six core principles: 1) decolonising education in counselling and psychology, 2) intersectionality, 3) cultural humility, 4) self-awareness and critical reflection for therapists, 5) engagement and connection, and 6) activism. This textbook serves as a valuable resource for teachers, students, and practitioners of systemic practice, family therapy, clinical psychology, counselling, and psychotherapy, as well as for professionals in training.
