A Guide for Developing a Culture of Caring Through Nursing Peer Mentorship Programs: Fostering Success and Resilience

by Deborah Kramer

This book describes in detail how to develop successful programs of nursing mentorship, utilizing concepts of caring that yields a strong, caring body of nurses who will be “nurse thrivers” as they find fulfilment and meaning in their professional commitment and will train others to do the same. The mentorship program is the ticket to success that many students need to complete their degree program, prevent burnout, pass the nursing NCLEX examination, and remain in the workforce after graduation. The current attrition rate in baccalaureate nursing programs is 25-50%, as is the attrition rate in the first 2 years of employment of new RN's entering the workforce. Burnout is due to a lack of care and support for helping the students navigate the rigor and demands of the nursing program. Creating a community of learners with caring and support creates an environment that fosters academic engagement and success. The unique aspect of this book is its focus on creating a caring environment to support the students; helping them develop caring skills, empathy, resilience and their own self-care; developing the skills for success beyond their educational process into the workforce. This book integrates all patterns of knowing - personal, aesthetic, empiric and ethical - and provides the missing link of peer mentorship necessary to the development of resilient, emancipated nursing students and graduates capable of working in community with others to establish cultures of care in health care. This is a must have resource for transformation of nursing education in the next century! Foreword by Dr. Margaret McClure.

Roman Spectacle on the Rio Grande: Borderland Animal Fights at the Turn of the Century (The\history Press Ser.)

by Bradley Folsom

How the gladiatorial games of ancient Rome appeared on the Texas frontier. From 1895 to 1913, promoters on the Texas-Mexico border imported a variety of large mammals from around the world to pit them against one another in interspecies combat. Lions fought bears, an elephant took on a bull, and one promoter released a tiger, a bull, and a bear into the same cage at the same time. Human combatants occasionally entered the fray, from a rodeo pioneer who squared off against an elk to a bullfighter who took on a buffalo. Vaudeville showmen supplied livestock, sensationalistic newspapers drove ticket sales, and Progressive Era animal rights groups lobbied to shut down the spectacle. Bradley Folsom gives an account of the epic border battles, both in and out of the cage, which tell the story of a time when Texas was a rising economic power and Mexico verged on revolution.

McKinley: The Witch Of Ivanov

by Sharlene Frances

Komarov eyed the person in front of him with determination; he would soon get her to stop smiling. Mac was surprised that Komarov even knew her name; she had imagined that he thought she was called ‘That Girl.' “The reason you are here is simple. You are to be the Village Witch. Do you have any questions?” Sascha and Anya mentally braced themselves, staring down at their shoes. “Oh, yes, I do, actually; thank you for asking.”Mac's expression was serious and sincere, even respectful. The other two did not dare look up, not even for a second. “I absolutely loved every minute I spent with this book - McKinley is such a wonderful character, and it's an interesting and quirky storyline, fast-paced and emotionally captivating... really, really great.” –Fiona Rom - Editor

Pastoral Identity: True Shepherds in the Household of Faith

by Douglas D. Webster

Webster calls pastors to reject "Christendom" approaches to church leadership that require the pastor to exert control over the church's direction and ministry. Such models differ fundamentally from the New Testament "household of faith" vision of pastoral ministry, which affirms the disciple-making responsibility of the whole community, the priesthood of all believers, and the shared gifts of the Spirit. Rather than perpetuate pastoral leadership based on individual initiative, institutional power, and personal charisma, experienced pastor and seminary professor Douglas Webster defines a New Testament model of the pastor, outlining the major features of pastoring among the household of faith, such as: - Viewing the church as an every-member ministry - Seeking synergism between pastoral identity and congregational identity - Prioritizing a pastor's daily rhythms of grace in prayer, study, and care for the body - Supporting pastor-theologians who shepherd believers in the whole counsel of God Such pastoral authority and guidance require mutual submission in Christ. Pastors and laypeople alike let go of dominant cultural models of pastoring and embrace the values of Christ's kingdom.

Stargazer: The Life, World and Films of Andy Warhol

by Stephen Koch

The definitive critical study of twentieth-century pop culture icon Andy Warhol, the man who redrew the boundaries of art. Andy Warhol&’s work and personality changed American visual culture forever, making him an international superstar. In this must-read volume, heralded as &“exemplary&” by Artforum and &“resoundingly brilliant&” by Film Comment, Stephen Koch provides unprecedented detail on Warhol&’s life and work—his rise to global fame, his entanglement with the seedy New York sexual underground, and the shocking assassination attempt that almost ended his life are chronicled—giving particular attention to a medium that found Andy at his wildest: film. The &“superstars&” he created—Candy Darling, Ultra Violet, Edie Sedgwick—to populate his films and his curation of socialites mingling with hustlers that coined the phrase &“The Beautiful People&” seem prescient as we consider today&’s stars and cultural panorama. In Stargazer, Koch illuminates the inspiration and brilliance on both sides of the public image that Warhol, who made paradox an art form, so meticulously crafted. In doing so, he gets to the core of Warhol&’s most interesting invention: his own public personality, the strange persona that this frightened and brilliantly talented poor-boy from Pittsburgh created to survive the savage world of his own ambitions. &“Stargazer is to die over.&” —Andy Warhol &“A volume of profound insight . . . resoundingly brilliant. It assumes the place of cornerstone in what will someday become a scholarly edifice dedicated to the analysis both of Warhol&’s meanings and of Warhol&’s forms.&” —Film Comment &“Some of the most exemplary critical writing that I have encountered. Moving across the convoluted terrain of Warhol&’s sensibility . . . with an ease and fluidity that draws the reader effortlessly around their quarry.&” —Artforum &“A landmark in American criticism . . . Stargazer is not only compelling beyond anything one expects of criticism, it happens also to be utterly timely.&” —The Boston Phoenix

Set This House on Fire: Lie Down In Darkness, Set This House On Fire, The Confessions Of Nat Turner, And Sophie's Choice (Vintage International Series)

by William Styron

A New York Times bestseller by the author of Sophie&’s Choice: Two Americans search for the truth about a mysterious long-ago murder in Italy. Shortly after World War II, in the village of Sambuco, Italy, two men—Virginia attorney Peter Leverett and South Carolina artist Cass Kinsolving—crossed paths with Mason Flagg. They both had their own reactions to the gregarious and charismatic movie mogul&’s son. For the impressionable Peter, it was something close to awe. For the alcoholic Cass, it was unsettled rage. Then, after the rape and murder of a peasant girl, Mason&’s body was found at the base of a cliff—an apparent suicide. He&’d been distraught, the authorities said, over committing such a heinous crime. Peter and Cass went their separate ways, and never spoke of it again. Now, years later, Peter is still haunted by what he knows—and by what he doesn&’t. He&’s sought out Cass in Charleston for closure, and something close to the truth. Together both men will share their tales of that terrible season in Italy, each with their own ghosts—and their own reasons to exorcise them. But neither Peter nor Cass is prepared for where this path of revenge, complicity, and atonement will take them. A profound exploration of the evil that men do, and what the innocent must endure to accommodate it, Set This House on Fire is more than a byzantine murder mystery, it&’s &“one of the finest novels of our times&” from the Pulitzer Prize–winning author of The Confessions of Nat Turner, Darkness Visible, and other modern classics (San Francisco Chronicle). This ebook features a new illustrated biography of William Styron, including original letters, rare photos, and never-before-seen documents from the Styron family and the Duke University Archives.

Nathaniel's Nutmeg: Or, The True and Incredible Adventures of the Spice Trader Who Changed the Course of History

by Giles Milton

A true tale of high adventure in the South Seas. The tiny island of Run is an insignificant speck in the Indonesian archipelago. Just two miles long and half a mile wide, it is remote, tranquil, and, these days, largely ignored.Yet 370 years ago, Run's harvest of nutmeg (a pound of which yielded a 3,200 percent profit by the time it arrived in England) turned it into the most lucrative of the Spice Islands, precipitating a battle between the all-powerful Dutch East India Company and the British Crown. The outcome of the fighting was one of the most spectacular deals in history: Britain ceded Run to Holland but in return was given Manhattan. This led not only to the birth of New York but also to the beginning of the British Empire.Such a deal was due to the persistence of one man. Nathaniel Courthope and his small band of adventurers were sent to Run in October 1616, and for four years held off the massive Dutch navy. Nathaniel's Nutmeg centers on the remarkable showdown between Courthope and the Dutch Governor General Jan Coen, and the brutal fate of the mariners racing to Run--and the other corners of the globe--to reap the huge profits of the spice trade. Written with the flair of a historical sea novel but based on rigorous research, Giles Milton's Nathaniel's Nutmeg is a brilliant adventure story by Giles Milton, a writer who has been hailed as the "new Bruce Chatwin" (Mail on Sunday).
