The Don: 36 Rules of the Bosses
by RJ Roger Joost ElffersFrom Cosa Nostra expert RJ Roger and publishing genius Joost Elffers comes a riveting history of the Mafia in America, the undeniable sweep and power of the Five Families, and their Machiavellian strategies—all condensed into an electrifying guidebook for understanding and harnessing the Mafia&’s philosophy of successfully rising within any hierarchy (legally, of course). A captivating history of the Mafia in America as well as an illuminating breakdown of the formidably effective—indeed ruthless—success strategies of the infamous Five Families that ruled, for anyone who&’s ever wondered what it takes to be a boss. The Don: 36 Rules of the Bosses is the fascinating culmination of author RJ Roger's extensive research into the Italian-American Cosa Nostra. Analyzing more than 100 years of underworld history, Roger has distilled the behavior of the bosses of the five New York Mafia families—the most powerful in the United States—into 36 rules. Unwritten until codified in The Don, these rules were the foundation of the bosses&’ success for over a century. Created in collaboration with Joost Elffers, the producer behind Robert Greene&’s international bestseller The 48 Laws of Power, Roger&’s The Don: 36 Rules of the Bosses details the history of the American Mafia. More important, it elucidates the strategies by which the bosses of the Five Families achieved and held power. Many of these leaders were devotees of Niccolò Machiavelli's treatise The Prince, a manual for would-be rulers written in 1513 and still read today by power brokers of many kinds around the world. Understanding the influence of this book on the most successful Mafia bosses, and also applying his expertise in contemporary business practices and his deep knowledge of America&’s underworld, Roger has identified 36 rules common to them all. In The Don, he explains these rules in ways that will be useful to any reader hoping to gain power, whether personally, politically, or in business.

When Tetrarchia and Radiant&’s home country of Loasht suddenly revoke their tenuous peace, Quruscan is no longer the safe haven for Radiant that it once was. He needs someone to help him escape: a bodyguard, perhaps, or someone with the sheer cunning to escort him to safety. The perfect candidate is Kalyna Aljosanova: a crafty, mysterious mercenary with an uncanny reputation. But the political situation in Loasht is far more volatile and dangerous than Radiant left it; it soon becomes clear that he may never be able to return home to his family. With a little of Kalyna&’s signature guile, she finds Radiant asylum in a utopian community on the border between Loasht and the Tetrarchia, and, for a moment, it seems like they might finally have a safe place to stay. But when the group&’s charismatic leader grows wary of the refugees flocking to his community—and suspicious of Kalyna in particular—that sense of safety begins to unravel once more. Kalyna the Cutthroat deftly imagines how the pressures of heroism can warp even the most unshakeable of survivors, asking what responsibilities human beings have to one another, and whether one good deed—of any magnitude—can absolve you of your past for the sake of a future.

Carl Perkins: The King of Rockabilly
by Jeff ApterThe definitive and fascinating biography of the musical trailblazer who was the influence behind countless legendary hits, a rock and roll legend in his own right, and the original rockabilly cat—Carl Perkins. He was the King of Rockabilly, and one of rock and roll&’s true pioneers. A groundbreaking guitarist, singer, and songwriter, Carl Perkins inspired countless musicians in country, rock, and pop music. As Paul McCartney said, &“If there were no Carl Perkins, there would be no Beatles.&” One Beatle was such a fan that he gave himself the stage name Carl Harrison. Now acclaimed music writer Jeff Apter recounts Carl&’s remarkable life story—the triumphs, tragedies, and career highlights that include some of the most pivotal moments in music history. Born in Tennessee to poor sharecroppers, Carl grew up listening to gospel and country music, learned blues guitar from a fellow field hand, and started writing songs at age fourteen. He plied his trade in rough and rowdy honky-tonks, performing with his brothers before beginning his recording career at the legendary Sun Studio in Memphis. It was there that Carl became a member of the fabled &“Million Dollar Quartet,&” alongside Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, and Jerry Lee Lewis. In 1955, he wrote and recorded &“Blue Suede Shoes,&” the first record by a Sun artist to sell over a million copies. But then a fateful car crash stalled his career, one of many tragedies in his life. Over the following decades, Presley, Cash, and countless other artists, from the Beatles, Tom Petty, and Bob Dylan to Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix, performed and recorded his songs and became Carl&’s friends, collaborators, and champions. Rich with insider detail and background into Carl&’s private battles, humanitarian work, and personal inspirations, this is a fascinating, in-depth look at &“Mr. Blue Suede Shoes&” and his one-of-a-kind legacy.

Woman in Soviet Russia (Routledge Library Editions: Soviet Society)
by Fannina W. HalleWomen in Soviet Russia (1933) was the first attempt to provide a comprehensive account of the position of women in the Soviet Union. It looks at the history of women’s achievements following the 1917 revolution, and of the efforts made by the Communists to establish sex equality between man and woman. This history embraces every activity of women, economical, political, cultural and biological. A survey is provided of women’s participation in the civil wars and in the work of the Five Year Plan; of woman’s role as mother, wife, worker and political leader; of her position in the home, in the state, and in industry; of the attempts of the Soviets to abolish prostitution; of the establishment of creches and maternity clinics; of the situation with regard to abortion and methods of birth control; of the marriage laws; and, above all, of the development of sex relations in Russia and the emotional life of both old and young Russian women.

Theatre as a Weapon: Workers' Theatre in the Soviet Union, Germany and Britain, 1917–1934 (Routledge Library Editions: Soviet Society)
by Richard Stourac Kathleen McCreeryBased on theatrical research of unusual depth and enterprise, Theatre as a Weapon (1986) shows how the workers’ theatre of the 1920s and 1930s transformed the social function of theatre. Drawing largely on unpublished sources, it provides lively case studies of workers’ theatre in the USSR, Germany and the United Kingdom. They range from the Russian mass spectacles in front of the Winter Palace, through the thousands of factory and courtyard performances in Germany, to the May Day activities of the Workers’ Theatre Movement all over Britain. The authors worked for many years in political theatre in Britain, Austria and Germany, and they draw on their wide experience to focus on both major theoretical controversies and their practical ramifications. They show how workers’ theatre became an instrument, a weapon, for political change, helping to raise the consciousness of thousands of workers and encouraging them to take action. They describe how worker-actors, musicians, writers and directors formed small, flexible troupes which contributed locally to the day-to-day struggles of their class, while at the same time participating in national and international political campaigns. Developments in dramatic structure are analysed, from the simple review form to the more complex scene-and-song montage. Placing the work of Meyerhold, Eisenstein, Piscator, Brecht and Eisler in this context, the authors demonstrate how the montage principle became the significant factor in the political theatre of this period. The book is illustrated with rare photographs which reflect the atmosphere of those mass movements. Unique in its coverage, Theatre as a Weapon is above all an analysis of how the mirror of realistic theatre was transformed into a dynamic weapon for social change. It fills an important gap in the history of working-class culture.
Russian Theater: From the Empire to the Soviets (Routledge Library Editions: Soviet Society)
by Marc SlonimRussian Theater (1963) is a comprehensive study of the main trends in Russian theatre in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Beginning with its origins in pagan folklore and ritual, it goes on to consider the romantic drama which flourished in the first half of the nineteenth century, the realistic drama of Gogol, Turgenev and their contemporaries, and the beginning of the modernist movement. The foundation of the famous Moscow Art Theatre in 1898 by Stanislavsky and Danchenko led to a remarkable period of innovation in acting, production and stage design which still influences the theatre of the West. Their association of Chekhov and their production of his plays is fully described. The reader is also introduced to the work of such playwrights as Andreyev and Gorky, and to the experiments and ideas of directors like Meeyerhold, Tairov and Vakhtangov. A large part of the book is devoted to a systemic analysis of plays and trends under the Soviets and the rise and fall of the avant-garde theatres and the reasons for their replacement by conservative realism.

Soviet Composers and the Development of Soviet Music (Routledge Library Editions: Soviet Society)
by Stanley Dale KrebsSoviet Composers and the Development of Soviet Music (1970) is a thought-provoking review of Soviet music and musicians. This scholarly and readable distillation of factual information and well-reasoned conclusions is the result of many years of exhaustive study of reference works, monographs and journals, as well as musical scores both published and unpublished, all supplemented by interviews and personal participation in Soviet musical life. The author presents a cogent, critical analysis of the relationship between extra-musical pressures and the theory and practice of artistic autonomy. The lives and works of some two dozen major Soviet composers are discussed, and insight is provided into Soviet thinking about music, and thinking about the arts.
The Making of the Soviet Citizen: Character Formation and Civic Training in Soviet Education (Routledge Library Editions: Soviet Society)
by George AvisThe Making of the Soviet Citizen (1987) examines the distinctive feature of Soviet education – the crucial importance it gives to the formation of a new type of person, the model socialist citizen. Success in this endeavour is regarded as essential for the creation of the material and spiritual bases of communism, and Soviet educational establishments accordingly devoted immense effort and resources to a programme of character building – vospitanie, moral, social and political development. This collection brings together the results of research devoted to character formation and civic training in Soviet education. The contributors present detailed analyses of the aims and methods of various major components of the vospitanie process and examine the development of their implementation.
Soviet Literature in the Sixties (Routledge Library Editions: Soviet Society)
by Max Hayward Edward L. CrowleySoviet Literature in the Sixties (1965) examines the Soviet literary scene and its changes following the death of Stalin.
