Mobilizing Food Vending: Gourmet Food Trucks in the American City
by Ginette WesselMobilizing Food Vending investigates the gourmet food truck movement in the United States and provides a clearer understanding of the social and economic factors that shape vendor autonomy and industry growth. The book features case studies in a variety of American cities and uses top-down and bottom-up urban theory to frame a discussion of food trucks’ rights, displacement, and resiliency. Using ethnographic and archival research collected from industry experts, the book examines vendors’ operational strategies, their regulatory challenges when navigating the city, and their economic, cultural, and political roles in shaping urban space. Mobilizing Food Vending argues that food truck vendors are critical actors that support local economies and contribute to the public realm while shaping regulatory policy from the bottom up. This book will appeal to urban scholars studying the contemporary neoliberal city, the public realm, and communication technology and mobility, as well as to urban planners seeking to understand how vendors shape city plans and policies.
Transformative L2 Teacher Education Innovations: Insights from Vygotskian Sociocultural Theory (ESL & Applied Linguistics Professional Series)
by Karen E. Johnson Paula R. Golombek Jacob RiekerTransformative L2 Teacher Education Innovations features empirical research studies informed by Vygotskian Sociocultural Theory (VSCT) that are explicitly and intentionally designed to transform second language (L2) teacher reasoning and thinking, as well as L2 teaching practices and pedagogical choices. With contributions from scholars and practicing teacher educators, each chapter highlights a designed innovative professional development experience that has created a “new” social situation of development with a clearly articulated “ideal” for L2 teachers to embrace and/or achieve. Each study articulates the rationale and unique design features of the innovation, the intentionality behind the choices made when designing and enacting the innovation, and the quality, character, and outcomes of the intervention for L2 teachers. Furthermore, each study documents the forms of mediation that are offered to support L2 teacher professional development, such as conceptual tools, goal-directed activities, and/or social relations/interactions.The book offers insight into the internal logic of VSCT-informed L2 Teacher Education and provides concrete examples of how L2 teacher educators can adopt a Vygotskian-informed pedagogical stance in their teacher education practices. The edited collection is especially applicable for scholars and teacher educators in language education, applied linguistics, TESOL, and bilingual education who engage with Vygotskian Sociocultural Theory.

Applied Psychology Practice in Professional Sport: Meeting the Person, Knowing the Athlete
by Mark NestiApplied Psychology Practice in Professional Sport is the first text to draw directly on psychological work delivered over many years to individual players and staff inside English Premier League Football as well as other professional sports, such as cricket, tennis, and golf.A key feature of this new text is the use of examples from the author’s applied practice, to demonstrate that many psychological terms and words used in the “lived world” of high-level professional sport, can be understood with greater depth and meaning where these are informed by more holistic perspectives such as existential, phenomenological, transpersonal and humanistic psychology. Implications for applied sport psychology practice are examined and recommendations offered.Although the book is about professional sport and psychology and is key readings for those associated within this discipline, the ideas and concepts discussed should be familiar to anyone involved in supporting people in challenging performance focused environments such as, business, education, or coaching professions. It is hoped that leaders, managers and other staff from these occupations, and closely related sectors, will find the book interesting and useful.
ANALYSIS: The Key to Improving Organization and Individual Performance
by Richard A. Swanson Thomas J. ChermackWith the volatile nature of today’s workplaces, analysis tools are more valuable than ever: this book provides those tools to capture human expertise before it leaves the organization. The concepts of analysis may be timeless, but recent years have seen massive changes in terms of organizational structures, work systems, and worker requirements, such as remote working and increased employee turnover. This book covers the theory and concepts behind performance improvement, and then turns to the real-world work of performance diagnosis, process improvement, and task documentation, introducing cross-functional task analysis, which recognizes the changing nature of work as more of today’s tasks are extensive and require collaboration across jobs. Each chapter can stand alone if organizations need to focus on a particular area, and includes examples that reflect contemporary work, from job descriptions to task inventories and specific task analyses. One of the only texts providing the tools and processes necessary to analyze workplace performance, document human expertise, and develop training materials, this book is intended for managers, executives, students, and any workplace or organization development professional interested in human expertise and how to manage it.

by Aglaia KremeziThis New York Times Notable Book is &“a real working guide to preparing the traditional dishes found all over Greece&” (Newsweek).
