Between Two Rivers: 'A WONDERFUL READ' -- TOM HOLLAND
by Moudhy Al-Rashid'I have never read a book on Mesopotamia that so beautifully brings to life the people themselves ... It melts away the sense of time. A wonderful read.'TOM HOLLAND'A tender, moving and vivid history of ancient Mesopotamia and how it still speaks to us.' ROBERT MACFARLANE 'Fascinating and magnificent, beautifully written and explained: this book is a masterpiece.' GEORGE MONBIOT'Ancient Mesopotamia comes alive in Moudhy Al-Rashid's must-read, millennia-spanning history ... spellbinding.' NEW SCIENTIST ---------- Thousands of years ago, in a part of the world we now call ancient Mesopotamia, people began writing things down for the very first time. What they left behind, in a vast region between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, preserves leaps in human ingenuity, like the earliest depiction of a wheel and the first approximation of pi. But they also capture breathtakingly intimate, raw and relatable moments, like a dog's paw prints as it accidentally stepped into fresh clay, or the imprint of a child's teeth. In Between Two Rivers, historian Dr Moudhy Al-Rashid reveals what these ancient people chose to record about their lives, allowing us to brush hands with them millennia later. We find a lullaby to soothe a baby, instructions for exorcising a ghost, countless receipts for beer, and the adorable, messy writing of preschoolers. We meet an enslaved person negotiating their freedom, an astronomer tracing the movement of the planets, a princess who may have created the world's first museum, and a working mother struggling with 'the juggle' in 1900 BCE. Together, these fragments illuminate not just the history of Mesopotamia, but the story of how history was made.

Everyday Christian Teaching: A Guide to Practicing Faith in the Classroom
by David I. SmithDiscover how ordinary moments in the school year can become occasions for making profound connections between faith and pedagogy. In this encouraging and practical book, education expert David I. Smith invites Christian educators on a journey through the school year that will deepen their capacity to make thoughtful connections between their faith and their pedagogy. Mirroring the rhythms of an academic year, the book embraces and explores the mundane moments that all teachers experience every semester. Starting the course. Setting some norms for interaction. Choosing how to frame the material. Assigning tasks. Repeating things. Pausing. Bringing things to a close. The topics are deliberately ordinary because, as Smith demonstrates, the shape of one&’s teaching is mainly built from the unspectacular choices and actions that gradually shape the texture of life in the classroom. If educators want to think well about Christian faith and teaching and act well in the classroom, they need to learn to reflect well on those ordinary steps in the journey. Everyday Christian Teaching builds on Smith&’s previous book On Christian Teaching: Practicing Faith in the Classroom, where he made a persuasive case for connecting faith and pedagogy. The new book aims to put this idea into practice, as Smith explains in the introduction: &“Suppose we want to get better at thinking about faith and teaching together. What then? What does the road look like, and how do we walk it wisely? If we&’d like to be a pilgrim, how do we make progress?&” Taking up such questions with wisdom and empathy, Everyday Christian Teaching helps educators develop faith-informed insights and life-giving practices that can transform their teaching over the course of time.
The Affections of Christ Jesus: Love at the Heart of Paul's Theology
by Nijay K. GuptaA new perspective on an often-overlooked aspect of Paul&’s theology: love Pauline scholars have long debated the so-called center of Paul&’s theology, focusing on themes like justification by faith, reconciliation, union with Christ, and the apocalyptic triumph of God in Christ. In this innovative study, Nijay Gupta offers a new perspective that emphasizes Paul&’s understanding of love at the heart of the gospel he preached. Through careful examination of the historical, cultural, and linguistic milieu in which Paul was working, Gupta identifies what is unique and important in Paul&’s theology of love. In so doing, Gupta helps readers develop a deeper appreciation for the extent to which love permeates Paul&’s understanding of the triune God, the gospel, the community, and the mission and lifestyle of God&’s people.
Complexity Theory and Educational Leadership in Schools: Towards a Systems Transformation Heuristic
by null Patrick McQuillan null Laura Schall-Leckrone null Brad Kershner null Anna Noble Dunphy null Ksenia FilatovThe research in this volume draws on aspects of complexity theory and its integral link to systems performance to propose a new method for combatting the longstanding opportunity gap and related underperformance of so many underserved students in the American educational system.Through a longitudinal case study of the Lynch Leadership Academy at Boston College, this research considers the initial conditions and related disequilibrium principals experienced, the degree to which principals shared power and authority within their school context, and the extent to which they generated a shared school culture founded on collaboration and systematic reflection. From these data, the authors create a detailed picture of the Academy and its impact on the principals and their schools, using a new analytic tool called the “systems transformation heuristic," designed by the authors to quantify the qualitative dimensions of a school’s efforts to enact adaptive change consistent with the complex adaptive system metaphor. As such, it offers a new foundation for conceptualizing ongoing systems change, as well as a fresh model for school personnel to consider their experience from concrete, intertwined, and unique points of view. It will appeal to scholars, researchers, and practitioners with interests in educational leadership, complexity theory, urban education, and social justice.
Consent in Shakespeare’s Classical Mediterranean: Women Speak Truth to Power (Routledge Advances in Theatre & Performance Studies)
by null Artemis PreeshlConsent in Shakespeare’s Classical Mediterranean fills a gap in knowledge about how female-identified, gender-fluid, and non-binary characters made choices about intimacy, engagement, and marriage in Shakespeare’s classical Mediterranean plays. This classical sequel explores how female-identified, gender-fluid, and non-binary characters accessed agency in Shakespeare’s Mediterranean plays set in classical Troy, Athens, Thebes, Antioch, Ephesus, Mytilene, the North African Pentapolis, Tarsus, Egypt, Rome, Antium, Britain, Sardis, Philippi, Sicily, greater Bohemia, and the Balkan region. Through the lens of sources from Eastern and Western Europe, the Middle East, and the Maghrib, Shakespeare’s heroines and their supporters may have initially appeared to conform to Early Modern contexts, but the diverse backgrounds of female-identified, gender-fluid, and non-binary characters impacted the right to consent to friendship, affection, betrothal, and marriage in the classical Mediterranean. By focusing on perspective views about female-identified, gender-fluid, and non-binary characters in and around Eastern and Western Europe, the Middle East, and the Maghreb, classical realities collide with Early Modern preconceptions and misconceptions to reveal commonalities and differences in the lived experiences of female-identified and non-binary royalty, nobility, servants, enslaved peoples, matchmakers, courtesans, sex workers, madams, herbalists, tailors, and merchants. This study will be of great interest to students and scholars in Theatre, Middle East Studies, Asian Studies, Eastern European and Eurasian Studies, African and Maghrib Studies, and Social Justice Studies.
Realizing Complex Integrated Systems
by Anthony P. Ambler John W. SheppardThe creation of complex integrated systems is, in itself, complex. It requires immense planning and a large team of people with diverse backgrounds based in dispersed geographical locations (and countries) supposedly working to a coordinated schedule and cost. The systems engineering task is not new, but recent scales most definitely are. The world is now capable of designing and manufacturing systems whose complexity was not considered possible 10 years ago. While many are trained to think in terms of a complete system, where ‘everything’ is designed and produced by a single project team, today such systems involve integrating subsystems and components (which are also complex) that have been developed by other project teams. Inevitably, this introduces additional complexities, involving elements out of the direct control of the project, but which are essential to its overall success. In addition to traditional systems engineering topics of hardware and software design, testability, and manufacturability, there are wider issues to be contemplated: project planning; communication language (an issue for international teams); units of measure (imperial vs. metric) used across members of the team; supply chains (pandemics, military action, and natural disasters); legal issues based on place of production and sale; the ethics associated with target use; and the threat of cyberattack. This book is the first attempt to bring many of these issues together to highlight the complexities that need to be considered in modern system design. It is neither exhaustive nor comprehensive, but it gives pointers to the topics for the reader to follow up on in more detail.
Lean Leadership for Healthcare: Approaches to Lean Transformation
by null Ronald G. BercawThe second edition of this Shingo Prize-winning book builds and expands on the first edition. When originally published over ten years ago, there was a need to understand how to lead process and cultural transformation within the healthcare industry. The perfect storm of rising costs, decreasing reimbursements, substandard quality, a shortage of resources, and a new run of better technology and electronic health systems requires leadership to navigate in a different environment.Since the original book, lean improvements have been made to the governance of process and quality improvement programs, and to the management of operations using the daily management system. The core of the book remains the same; however, the results have been updated and made more current, given access to better data and enhanced use of the electronic health record. Extraordinarily good advice is given throughout this book on best practices of what to do and what not to do in leading large-scale change based on another ten years of hands-on experience of the author working in large and small healthcare systems across the country, including case studies that share the time-tested insights of healthcare team members and leaders. The book outlines a management system for sustaining lean improvements and provides the lean leadership approaches, thoughts, and visual tools needed to guide organizations along the path toward world-class healthcare performance. It walks the reader through developing an improvement strategy, laying out a detailed transformation roadmap for initiating, accelerating, and sustaining lean improvements and delivering world-class improvement of outcomes and culture, discussing leadership behaviors necessary for success, and closes with actions that can be used to mitigate risk. It reviews the fundamentals of lean and explains how to link a strategy of continuous improvement to corporate strategy to achieve operational excellence. The book also describes how to mitigate the risk of failure when undergoing large-scale corporate change, including what can go wrong and how to prevent these failures.Updated and refreshed, Lean Leadership for Healthcare remains the gold standard for end-to-end delivery of lean transformation in healthcare. This book is ideal for leaders in the healthcare industry looking to initiate or accelerate lean improvements to clinical and non-clinical processes.Ronald G. Bercaw is the President of Breakthrough Horizons, LTD, a management consulting company specializing in World-Class Improvement through the application of the Toyota Business System, or “lean.” With over 38 years of experience in operations, his hands-on, lean management experience was gained through multiple enterprise transformations in different industries including custom packaging, power reliability electronics assembly, and test and measurement products. Educated at Purdue University, he learned the details and disciplined applications of lean principles, habits, and tools from both the Shingijutsu Sensei and their first-generation disciples. Since leaving industry, Ron has consulting experience in the healthcare sector (U.S. and Canada health systems including primary care, acute care, and community applications of both clinical and back shop operations), the commercial sector (administration, manufacturing, distribution, supply chain, and engineering), and the public sector (U.S. Army, U.S. Navy, U.S. Air Force including Depot Repair Operations, the Pentagon, and Surgeon General Assignments). Ron is also a recognized author with the release of four books, including Shingo award-winners entitled Taking Improvement from the Assembly Line to Healthcare, and Lean Leadership for Healthcare. He is a co-author of The Lean Electronic Health Record, along with Susan Snedaker and Kurt Knoth, as part of the HIMSS book series.
Corpus Approaches to Discourse in Forensic and Legal Contexts (Routledge Advances in Corpus Linguistics)
by null David WrightThis book is the first of its kind to bridge the gap between corpus linguistics and forensic linguistics, illustrating the value of applying corpus linguistic data, tools, and methods in the analysis of language in the law, evidence, crime, and justice. The volume begins by taking stock of the use of corpus linguistics in the field of forensic and legal linguistics over its roughly thirty-year history as a foundation for critically reflecting on the current state-of play within the discipline. Wright uses this discussion as a jumping-off point from which to demonstrate the opportunities and challenges of using corpora and corpus methods to analyse language in legal and forensic contexts and offers possible solutions to collecting and analysing types of data that are typically not in the public domain. The five analysis chapters that follow apply corpus method to both established and emerging areas of forensic and legal linguistics, summarized in a concluding chapter which also looks ahead to future directions for the interface of the two fields. This book will be key reading for graduate students and researchers in forensic linguistics and corpus linguistics methods as well as scholars working across disciplines interested in the intersection between language and the law.
Innocence
by null Gabriele D'AnnunzioLara Gochin Raffaelli has produced an expert new English translation of a masterpiece of Italian literature. L'Innocente (1892) is a psychological novel by the renowned Italian author Gabriele D'Annunzio.Set in fin-de-siècle Rome and the southern Italian countryside, the story revolves around Tullio Hermil, a man entangled in his own moral failings. The translation is faithful to D’Annunzio’s original, maintaining his lyrical rhythms and rich imagery, while updating previously censored content for modern readers. Key themes include the interplay of religious faith and the pursuit of sensual pleasure; the implications of patriarchal authority; and the pursuit of redemption in a morally ambiguous worldInnocence presents an uncensored version of Gabriele D’Annunzio’s famous novel. Subialka, the novel is a valuable contribution to the fields of comparative literature, Italian studies, fin-de-siècle studies, and medical humanities.
New Materialism and Intersectionality: Making Middles Matter (Routledge Advances in Feminist Studies and Intersectionality)
by Katve-Kaisa Kontturi Taru Leppänen Tara Mehrabi Milla TiainenNew Materialism and Intersectionality advances the interplay of intersectionality theories and feminist new materialisms, arguing that co-constitutive influences between these fields will provide feminist and gender studies scholars with improved tools to analyse markers of difference and identity in 21st-century realities. In exploring the intersection of new materialisms and intersectionality studies, this volume puts forward a concept of "the middle". It refers to the situation-bound mutual impact of material, social, human, and more-than-human elements in the formation of differences, identities, subject positions, and power relations. The chapters elaborate this understanding of the middle in empirical research concerned with the relational emergence of differences in various social, cultural, artistic, and ecological settings. The middle is also proposed as a verb, whereby researchers who practise "middling" cultivate a capacity to account for the open-ended processes and relationships through which intersectional and materially lived differences unfold and reconfigure in particular contexts. This concept of the middle enriches understandings of how intersectional differences exist and can be studied, and what ethical and political implications they involve. The volume will interest scholars and students working with intersectionality, feminist new materialist, and posthumanist theories across the humanities and the social sciences.
Frontiers of Translation in Korean Language Education (The Korean Wave in Translation)
by Simon Barnes-Sadler Jieun KiaerFrontiers of Translation in Korean Language Education makes the case for the continuing relevance of translation in Korean as a Foreign Language (KFL) education. This book presents practical case studies of developing and implementing translation in KFL on scales ranging from extended programs – for example, the integration of a translation and interpreting internship program which responds to local community needs into the higher education curriculum – to single activities such as the comparison of English to Korean literary translations of the same source text to improve linguistic and cultural awareness.More theoretically-oriented works on the relationship of translation in KFL with fast-developing translation technology, the language of South Korean mass media, and the social processes of globalisation, are included alongside practical contributions. The substantive contributions are bookended by an introduction and conclusion, which provide overviews of the history and current disposition of translation in KFL and a prospectus for its future, respectively. Drawing on the work of researchers and practitioners based in higher education institutions across North America, Europe, and South Korea, both the practical and theoretical strands included in this collection come together to provide a well-rounded account of the most recent developments in Korean-language pedagogy, which will appeal to language teachers, particularly Korean language teachers, and the institutions that employ and train them.
