Madness: A Bipolar Life

by Marya Hornbacher

In the vein of An Unquiet Mind comes a storm of a memoir that will take you deep inside bipolar disorder and change everything you know. When Marya Hornbacher published her first book, Wasted: A Memoir of Anorexia and Bulimia, she did not yet have the piece of shattering knowledge that would finally make sense of the chaos of her life. At age twenty-four, Hornbacher was diagnosed with Type I rapid-cycle bipolar, the most severe form of bipolar disorder. In Madness, in her trademark wry and utterly self-revealing voice, Hornbacher tells her new story. Through scenes of astonishing visceral and emotional power, she takes us inside her own desperate attempts to counteract violently careening mood swings by self-starvation, substance abuse, numbing sex, and self-mutilation. How Hornbacher fights her way up from a madness that all but destroys her, and what it is like to live in a difficult and sometimes beautiful life and marriage—where bipolar always beckons—is at the center of this brave and heart-stopping memoir.Madness delivers the revelation that Hornbacher is not alone: millions of people in America today are struggling with a variety of disorders that may disguise their bipolar disease. And Hornbacher's fiercely self-aware portrait of her own bipolar as early as age four will powerfully change, too, the current debate on whether bipolar in children actually exists. New York Times&“Humorous, articulate, and self-aware…A story that is almost impossible to put down.&”— &“With the same intimately revelatory and shocking emotional power that marked [Wasted], Hornbacher guides us through her labyrinth of psychological demons.&”—Elle

Wirtschaft und soziale Ungleichheit (Wirtschaft + Gesellschaft)

by Jürgen Beyer Nina Baur

Wireless Communication Using Deep Learning Techniques for Neuromorphic VLSI Computing (Synthesis Lectures on Engineering, Science, and Technology)

by Ziad El-Khatib Sherif Moussa

This book describes Deep Learning-based architecture design for intelligent wireless communication systems and specifically for Deep Learning-based receiver design. Deep Learning-based architecture design utilizes Deep Learning (DL) techniques to reformulate the traditional block-based wireless communication architecture. Deep Learning-based algorithm design utilizes Deep Learning methods to speed up the processing at a guaranteed high accuracy performance. Automatic signal modulation classification in AI-based wireless communication can be done using deep learning techniques to improve dynamic spectrum allocation. Automatic signal modulation recognition in wireless communication is described using Deep Learning techniques to improve resource shortage and spectrum utilization efficiency. Moreover, using deep learning neural network circuit methods and doing parallel computations on hardware can reduce costs. Spiking neural network (SNN) provides a promising solution for low-power hardware for neuromorphic computing. Spiking Neural Networks circuit functions with a pre-trained network’s weights consume less power. Spiking neural network is more promising than other neural networks that can pave a new way for low-power computing applications. Analog VLSI is utilized to design spiking neural networks circuits such as silicon synapse and CMOS neuron.

Sentimental Tales (Russian Library)

by Mikhail Zoshchenko

&“Dralyuk&’s new translation of Sentimental Tales, a collection of Zoshchenko&’s stories from the 1920s, is a delight that brings the author&’s wit to life.&”—The EconomistMikhail Zoshchenko&’s Sentimental Tales are satirical portraits of small-town characters on the fringes of Soviet society in the first decade of Bolshevik rule. The tales are narrated by one Kolenkorov, a writer not very good at his job, who takes credit for editing the tales in a series of comic prefaces. Yet beneath Kolenkorov&’s intrusive narration and sublime blathering, the stories are genuinely moving. They tell tales of unrequited love and amorous misadventures among down-on-their-luck musicians, provincial damsels, aspiring poets, and liberal aristocrats hopelessly out of place in the new Russia, against a backdrop of overcrowded apartments, scheming, and daydreaming. Zoshchenko&’s deadpan style and sly ventriloquy mask a biting critique of Soviet life—and perhaps life in general. An original perspective on Soviet society in the 1920s and simply uproariously funny, Sentimental Tales at last shows Anglophone readers why Zoshchenko is considered among the greatest humorists of the Soviet era. &“A book that would make Gogol guffaw.&”—Kirkus Reviews &“If you find Chekhov a bit tame and want a more bite to your fiction, then you need a dose of Zoshchenko, the premier Russian satirist of the twentieth century . . . Snap up this thin volume and enjoy.&”—Russian Life &“Mikhail Zoshchenko masterfully exhibits a playful seriousness. . . . Juxtaposing joyful wit with the bleakness of Soviet Russia, Sentimental Tales is a potent antidote for Russian literature&’s dour reputation.&”—Foreword Reviews &“Superb.&”—Los Angeles Review of Books

Die Arbeit mit dem Radium: Radioaktivitätsforschung 1896 -1914 (Studien zur Geschichte der Naturwissenschaften, Medizin und Technik - Studies on the History of Sciences, Medicine and Technology)

by Beate Ceranski

The Kitchen as Laboratory: Reflections on the Science of Food and Cooking (Arts and Traditions of the Table Perspectives on Culinary History)

by César Vega, Job Ubbink and Erik van der Linden

&“Provides good perspective on the scientific approach to cooking while reflecting the interests and passions of each essay&’s author.&”—Peter Barham, author of The Science of CookingIn this global collaboration of essays, chefs and scientists advance culinary knowledge by testing hypotheses rooted in the physical and chemical properties of food. Using traditional and cutting-edge tools, ingredients, and techniques, these pioneers create, and sometimes revamp, dishes that respond to specific desires and serve up an original encounter with gastronomic practice. From the seemingly mundane to the food fantastic—from grilled cheese sandwiches, pizzas, and soft-boiled eggs to Turkish ice cream, sugar glasses, and jellified beads—the essays in The Kitchen as Laboratory cover a range of creations and their history and culture. This collection will delight experts and amateurs alike, especially as restaurants rely more on science-based cooking and recreational cooks increasingly explore the physics and chemistry behind their art. Contributors end each essay with their personal thoughts on food, cooking, and science, offering rare insight into a professional&’s passion for playing with food.&“Where else can one have fun pondering the acoustics of crunchy foods or the texture of an ice cream that stretches like a rubber band?&”—Robert Wolke, author of What Einstein Told His Cook: Kitchen Science Explained &“Not only an in-depth study of many areas of food science, but also an entertaining read. For someone like me, who relishes understanding more about cooking from the inside out, it&’s heartening to see this area of literature expanded.&”—Chef Wylie Dufresne, wd~50

The Brothers' Lot

by Kevin Holohan

A &“mordantly funny&” novel set in a Dublin educational institution known as the Brothers of Godly Coercion School for Young Boys of Meager Means (Publishers Weekly). Combining the spirit of Kingsley Amis's Lucky Jim with a bawdy evisceration of hypocrisy in old-school Catholic education, The Brothers' Lot is a comic satire that tells the story of the Brothers of Godly Coercion School for Young Boys of Meager Means, a dilapidated Dickensian institution run by an assemblage of eccentric, insane, and often nasty celibate Brothers. The school is in decline and the Brothers hunger for a miracle to move their founder, the Venerable Saorseach O&’Rahilly, along the path to Sainthood. When a possible miracle presents itself, the Brothers fervently seize on it with the help of the ethically pliant Diocesan Investigator, himself hungry for a miracle to boost his career. But the school simultaneously comes under threat from strange outside forces. The harder the Brothers try to defend the school, the worse things seem to get. It takes an outsider, Finbar Sullivan, a young student newly arrived at the school, to see that the source of the threat may in fact lie inside the school itself. As the miracle unravels, the Brothers&’ efforts to preserve it unleash a disastrous chain of events. Tackling a serious subject through satire, The Brothers' Lot explores the culture that allowed abuses within church-run institutions in Ireland to go unchecked for decades. &“Potently conveys the anarchic spirit of schoolboy warfare.&”—The Irish Times &“A memorable, skillfully wrought, and evocative satire of an Ireland that has collapsed under the weight of its contradictions.&”—Joseph O&’Connor &“Witty, brilliant, devastating.&”—Times Literary Supplement
